hello people
I have to do a typing test as part of an interview for a job at a hospital.
any one know what this could include and maybe if possile how i could prepare for it?
would appreciate your feedback
thanks
MOON
Juicyb125 05-08-2005, 09:58 PM Yes, print out a couple of pages of paragraphed text and set your timer and copy type for 1 minute as fast as you can.... accuracy is more important than time as every mistake is added on.
Just try not to get flustered and stay calm.
:D
Good idea, thanks
also i found this site maybe others can have a go?
test yourself at:
here (http://www.reephamhigh.norfolk.sch.uk/subjects/ICT/Typing.html)
good luck
cgksheff 05-08-2005, 10:16 PM If you put "typing test" into Google, you will find a few online programmes and some freeware typing speed test to let you know how you are doing.
I always multiply the results by 2 because I use two fingers!!!!
redrobbo 05-08-2005, 10:19 PM 35 words per minute. 1 mistake. How does that rate for a 2 fingered typist?
Edit: 2nd. attempt - 39 words per minute; 1 mistake.
lol
well im just trying to work out if i type better using the middle finger on my hand or the one closer to my thumb.
i have worked out i make less errors using the finger closer to my thumb.
m00n
Juicyb125 05-08-2005, 10:33 PM LOL
Dont you use all your fingers? - Sorry - didn't mean to be rude - have you tried typing with all your fingers? It is a lot quicker once you get used to it.
no i prefer to stick to using one finger on each hand,
its only the real professional typists that use all fingers in order to push the correct buttons using the correct fingers!!!!!!!!

Oooh sorry! you are absolutely right - I wouldn't dare say otherwise - just mind you don't wear them out!:hihi: :P
I wonder what this typin test will involve?

That's about it really - are they going to give you a spelling test as well?
I had one recently and it really threw me - they give you 5 different alternatives to choose and you end up questionning yourself and not knowing which one is the right one! LOL
Quite amusing actually - they left me in a room on my own so I phoned a friend! Not much luck there though!
i know what you mean
exmaple which is correct:
mr moor or mr moore
lol lol lol

Well years of MSN messenger practice must mean I'm a professional typist :) Just practice typing as much as you can, your fingers soon learn which keys are where. I can pretty much touch type now and I've had no formal training.
I wouldn't worry about it too much because my mum went to secretarial college and passed typing exams, she still types with two fingers :)
lol i dont think what you type with is important its the speed and accuracy that is important!
so if i wanted to start to type with my feet or even..... something else (ahem) i could do so.......as long as i would type at a decent speed and at a decent acuracy level!
Priscilla 06-08-2005, 10:16 AM 22 words per minute on expert!!!!! WOOHOO and no mistakes
49 words per minute no mistake
10 worded sentence in 12seconds
kewl
SpiderPete 06-08-2005, 06:04 PM I cold only manage 45-49 wpm as well. :(
MTheo 06-08-2005, 06:42 PM you typed a 15 word sentance in 15.391 seconds. at a speed of 58 words per minute. no mistakes
;) expert level.
it should except the `return key' as done though..lose valuable time clicking that box
SpiderPete 06-08-2005, 06:51 PM It doesnt seem much of a test typing a few words, I shall scout the internet and see if we can find a better one to do.

i want a better test....im not talented at much...so i wanna unleash my touch typing and see just how good i can do.
i do make a few errors....but thats coz after gettin bored with the training i took out the tape of the woman repeating words to me...and put in bon jovi albums
SpiderPete 06-08-2005, 07:06 PM Try this one :
another typing test (http://www.learn2type.com/TypingTest)
gonna do it now, before I get drunk on 8 cans of carlsberg lol.
SpiderPete 06-08-2005, 07:09 PM Oh this is more of a challenge, went down to only 20 wpm with 3 mistakes
MTheo 06-08-2005, 07:31 PM Your speed was 73 WPM with 2 mistakes (adjusted speed 71 WPM)
felt a bit too much like work typing all that though lol
redhotjo 07-08-2005, 06:46 PM the test I issue is my handwriting (a challenge in itself) and includes names etc but the candidate has other information available in order to check that its right. It includes inserted paragraph and isnt so much about speed but attention to detail. Good luck!
where do u work then red hot if u dont minf tellin us
redhotjo 08-08-2005, 09:18 PM hiya - i work for a university but also work for a local health charity as volunteer director
parcher 12-08-2005, 09:18 PM Just tried the typing test myself - 57 wpm no mistakes!
I used to work for a hospital - the test we did was an audio test - typing a short letter, usually.
NicoleM 13-08-2005, 07:47 PM If you are going for a job which entails a typing test, surely you must be familiar with these types of roles? I have been a senior sec for a few years and have attended many interviews in which typing tets are usually the norm.
no as i am wanting to enter this section of work so no experience
sheff_minx 18-08-2005, 11:08 AM I did a typing test when I signed up with an agency. It was three tests - one was typing out a letter and editing it according to instructions (inserting paragraphs, underlining etc), the second one was a speed-test - basically copying a text in a certain amount of time to gain a WPM speed. The third was building a spreadsheet - and was basically to see if I knew how to use Excel.
I've done a few of these tests and they're usually a similar format. Hope that helps.
parcher 18-08-2005, 12:55 PM moon - I worked at NGH
Classic Rock 18-08-2005, 04:50 PM I did 68 wpm with no errors on the beginners test, it dropped to 59 wpm on the higher level. No errors though. Took time to stop typing and press 'done' though.
wendygs 18-08-2005, 10:31 PM What does the job description say?
For the typing, get a Pitman's or Gregg typing manual at the library and start typing all of the more advanced exercises in these books. I think you only need to review how to do simple letters, forms, tabulation etc.
What I'd expect to see and marked strictly on is well presented typed layout without typos or tippex!! Display work is easier these days but familarise with more advanced features in MS Word so you know how to use them because this may be required for the interview.
Unless you want to learn how to touch-type I shouldnt waste your time because the exercises to remember all the keys are incredibly boring and tecious. I cant see they'll be fussed if you are a touch-typist or use 2 fingers provided you deliver the work on time and to a reasonable standard.
I used to work with someone in M&S who could only type with 2 fingers who was not that much slower than me I'm 70-120 wpm.
Practice makes perfect and hope your interview goes well. :)
wendygs
PS forgot mention above that I used to teach typing - very very boring.
