A Big BBC VJ Day Anniversary is planned for Sheffield's Winter Garden and Millennium Galleries.

A Second World War Anniversary with a difference comes to Sheffield this month, as the BBC gears up for the VJ Day Commemorations with a big public event at the Winter Garden and Millennium Galleries on Saturday 13 August from 10.00am until 4.00pm.

There'll be a Forties Tea Dance with organist Aubrey Robinson; the Black Coffee Jazz Band with singer Alice Coulam; and a Second World War singalong (with song-sheets).

There'll be people in forces uniforms and plenty of refreshments on the cards - and you're invited to come along and experience some 'wartime' atmosphere and culture.

It's all to commemorate VJ Day 2005, the 60th anniversary of the Allied victory in Japan.

VJ Day is normally marked on 15 August but, by agreement with the Burma Star Association, more events across the UK are being planned for 21 August.

Margaret Burgin from the BBC in Yorkshire says: "There'll be dozens of information stands from local historical and forces- related organisations present on the day and our BBC People's War Project team will be collecting memories, stories and experiences from people who lived through the Second World War."

A free magazine explaining a little bit more about the project will be also available.

"BBC Radio Sheffield will also be broadcasting live from this event and we hope that it will be a very enjoyable and memorable day," added Margaret.
