Don't know much about the area but this seems to be a positive step for Sheffield... How did burngreave compare to areas like, say, Crookes or Sharrow? I know neither of those are bad, just curious...

Burngreave is the area near Pitsmoor that has (up until recently) had a high crime rate. If you look up to Ski Village you will see dozens of empty maisonettes alongside with little terraced-like houses that resemble owls. The Council has decided to demolish these homes and landscape the area as no new tenants would want to live in new housing stock if it were to be built there due to its bad reputation.
Recently there was a big drug bust there, a shop selling crack cocaine disguised as a record shop. :P

What I was leading to say was, if the crime rate has dropped surely it's because no one lives there anymore?? Can anyone confirm this
:P

Crookes has hardly any crime, cos it's nearly all students who live up there.

I work in Burgreave and can confirm lots of people live there. Its quite lucky that they do as I work in the local primary school and I would be out of a job if no one lived there. The area has improved and the majority of people that live there are normal, honest, hard working folk.

The reason crime is down in Burngreave is all the dealers have moved to Firth Park, Shiregreen and Wincobank. All thats happened is the problem has been moved ( a clever local government tactic to create 'good news' stories!)

Don't believe me, try down Firth Park roundabout after dark to see whats really going on.

No but they are more likely to get mugged, etc.

How do you work that one out?

Student/shared houses are meccas for burglars because they can get 5 or 6 stereos, videos, computers, etc. for one break in.

Firth Park isn't as bad as people think. In the summer I'm down there most of the day, I won't say who with and why.. but I will say it's not all that rough.

:P Yes i will confirm this.
The part of Pitsmoor you are talking about is Woodside were i was brought up in the 60s and 70s and most of them now are demolished or will be in the very near future.
You were spot on that they are landscaping the whole area because no one will ever live there due to its reputation.
Its a shame really because it was the most friendliest area in Sheffield in the 60s and early 70s and you could not have wished for a better area to live in.
Its a sign of the times i,m affraid now and most council areas are not the same anymore.
There is still an abundance of people living in the lower part of Pitsmoor such as Burngreave which shows no sign of clearance but still has a high rate of crime however the reason for the drop in crime is certainly that Woodside is now empty.
Unfortunatly the drug dealers and no hopers that used to live there, and i am not tarring all with the same brush by any means but they have to put them somewhere else, usually another council estate and no doubt we will see more crime in other areas and further deteriation.
