Does it have a yellow light on the front panel? If so it's broken and will need sending back to Sony for repair.

You have got the YLOD. Similar to the xbox ring of death (but happens far les often).

If your console is les than 2yrs old phone sony and they will bring u out a replacement in 2 days!!!!

Dont pay someone to fix it if you dont have to

If its beyond 2 years (likely with a 60g) then u can always try sony anyway and say you have lost your receipt (or it was a bday pressie)

If they say no, only then give it to someone to fix!!!

Hi, I though that might be the case. Now I would pick someone who has offered to fix it for u. Terminator is a friend of mine and i can vouch for him, but I'm sure the other persons offer is good too. Personally I would get some insurance in it, wait a month then claim;)

The only reason the YLOD seems to appear less often, is because of the applesque fanboyism who believe Sony when they say "It's a feature, not a fault."

The reason it doesnt happen as often is because...................It doesnt.

Simples. Nothing to do with who prefers what console for godsake (so lose the chip on your shoulder).

It may sound stupid but give the back vents a ten minute blast of hot hair with a hair dryer, let it cool down and it should work again.

I fixed my old 60gb system that 'ylod' last year this way and it's still working with no problems. :D

That is not a sensible way to fix anything.

I think you'll find that it happens quite regularly. If the PS3 had more of a hold in the market, it would be even more widespread. If you think it doesn't because it's the almighty Sony then you are sorely mistaken.

I've had more problems with my PS3 than my 360.
It's not the manufacturers fault, it's the tree huggers who won't allow proper solder anymore so it's all lead free stuff that has a lower flow rate and lower melting point.
As the chip dies get smaller, they generate less heat and require less power so the problems appear to occur less. The newer Xboxs are at 45nm where the original ones were 90nm. All the PS3's are 65nm (apart from the slims, which are 45nm)
Now you can see how Sony managed to make it smaller.

The usual fix (Xbox wise anyway) is actually reballing the chip with proper solder. X-Clamp, Hairdryers and towels are temporary at best.

I really don't understand why you think I have a chip on my shoulder though, to quote a recent hardware article "The box of silicone that plays my games is about as important to me as the shape of a crisp"
