I need urgent help sorting out our small office network.
It worked fine before i bought this new Dell machine but just can't get the network back up and running.
Help!!
schloosh 05-08-2005, 11:06 Post some more info and i'll see.
What OS are you using for the server and PCs?
What errors are you getting, or what isn;t working?

Had 2 pc's linked up on XP Pro which was fine, then i bought this Dell machine to link up to one of the old machines.
I've run the wizards, set the same workgroup etc but keep getting the following errors on the diagnostics (on new machine) ......

The client pc sometimes see's the server (new machine), but host pc keeps saying 'no permission' etc when i click to view all machines on network.
The problem seems to relate to the IP address.
P.S. I have disabled the firewall on both machines (i have up to date norton on both too)
Thanks!!
RazorSHarp 05-08-2005, 12:36 are you using a switch or daisy chaining your PC's?
Looks very much like its not connected. Check your cables, and try it in a different switch port. Also make sure the adapter is enabled in network connections. and turn XP's ruddy PO firewall off.

Adapter is enable (well it says 'connected')
XP's firewall on both machines off!
What are the IP address details of each of the computers?
Make sure they all have the same subnet mask, and are on the same address range.
Joel
OK.
Another thing i wondered ....
Should my DSL router be listed under Network Adaptors in Device Manager?
No, if its only plugged in via ethernet, it wont. windows XP just sees it as the network card is Connected

The router is plugged in via USB and this pc is the host which connects to the internet.
Not sure if that helps?
are you supposed to be using dhcp or assinging addresses manually?
And if it's the latter then are you sure that 192.168.0.1 isn't already being used by another of your pc's?
If it's the former then it looks like you've not told it to use dhcp to aquire an address.

What is dhcp?
OK, i've told it to assign IP address automatically but now it says 'Limited or no connectivity'
What now?

has it picked up an ipaddress?
try from a dos prompt (start via - start menu - run - cmd)
ipconfig /renew
then ipconfig /all
paste the results into this thread.
Done that, but how can i paste it in?

How is your network setup?
Do you have all your PC's connected via wires to your router? or do you have a switch and the modem attatched to one of the PC's?
Joel
We have a cable from each PC's adaptor go into a central hub.
The DSL modem is plugged into the USB of the host pc.

so the pc with the modem connected should have internet connection sharing and should be acting as a dhcp server (assigning addresses to the other pc's).
Or alternatively you can configure an address for them manually, which might be how it was working. The problem was probably then that you tried to reuse the same address for the new pc 192.168.0.1 as was already being used.
try setting that to something else, for example 192.168.0.15
The host pc now has the IP 169.254.247.0 which is different from the client pc.
So why still a problem?
P.S. The client pc can see the host on the network, but the host keeps saying "no permission" etc etc.

All the network cards on your side of the network (ie not internet) should have 192.168.0.* IP addresses and the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 for ALL the machines.

I thought the IP addresses should be different?
If mine (host) should be 192.168.0.* then what should client IP be?
Very confused?
the * means an number between 0 and 254.
All the machines on your local network should start with the same first 3 octets, ie 192.168.0
the last number has to be different on all of them.
Should i change it manually then?
Ok, i've changed the host IP so same as client but with a different last octets.
I've also made the subnet mask and default gateway the same.
Is this correct?

sounds about right.
But which machine are you calling host and which client?
And which is the new one, I got confused somewhere along the way?
Has the change fixed your problem?
The new one is the host, which has the internet sharing set up.
No it hasn't fixed the problem.
P.S. When we try using internet from client pc it tries to dial up rather than use host machine, despite telling it otherwise in network wizard.
What should the DNS & WINS Servers read?
Also client pc lists dhcp server but not the host.
??
Okay.
Easist thing to do is a plan.
Host Machine -> 192.168.0.1
Client 1 -> 192.168.0.2
Client 2 -> 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask -> 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway -> 192.168.0.1
and then the DNS servers need to be the ones your ISP provide, they should be on their website.
TheManWhoCan 06-08-2005, 00:07 Hey unisol!
If you're still having the problem make sure the the internet connection on the PC with modem in is shared (go to network conections, right click on the Openwoe connection and enable sharing).
Then make sure you have assigned not just IP's but DNS servers to all other PC's...use the same ones as in your screen dump of the ipconfig results.
Martin_s 06-08-2005, 00:17 Probably waaay too late to add anything but just to add..
My immediate impression from the ipconfig output was that the Network adapter on the "internet sharing machine" (ie: the one that had the USB modem connected) should have been 192.168.0.1.
Everything else would have been using 192.168.0.*** without duplicating and use the 192.168.0.1 as the gateway and DNS address.
Beyond that, all bets are off but think everyone else covered the important bits...
OK, i've set the following: -
Host machine:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS server: 192.72.9.34
Client machine:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS server: 192.72.9.34
The client can see both machines, but host still keeps waiting a while then saying 'no permission' etc
The internet connection on the host machine is definately shared.
Also, when running the diagnostic on both machines i'm still getting the same FAILED reports (see page 1 of this thread)
Can't think what else to do.
P.S. Thanks for all your help so far
TheManWhoCan 06-08-2005, 10:59 Hey there
It may help if you describe in more detail what actually is reporting back to you this 'no permission' thing ?
Dunno about the others here, but I wonder whether it is even worth persevering with a Modem. If you get a 4-port ADSL Modem/Router you wouldnt have to bother with the network switch (if less than 4 PC's) or the modem. You'd also get a real 'always-on' service cos the router holds the connection open.
The router will also assign DHCP, DNS and Gateway settings correctly if you set all of your PC's back to 'automatic'.
Its much better, trust me, and all of your PC's wil be able to get on the web at any time - no need to wait for one of them to boot. Budget ADSL routers - Netgear or Dlink - start at about £50. Netgear DG834 is a commonly used one.
Sorry forgot to mention, i'm using a Belkin 4 way hub for the network and a DSL router for the net.

if your using a dsl router, why are you trying to use a pc to do connection sharing?

Sorry, no the modem is just a BT broadband modem.
Seems to me you want to save yourself a lot of bother and buy a Netgear DG834 ADSL Modem, Router with 4-port 10/100 Mbps switch for example.
£55 at Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/7wvrh
Probably cheaper elsewere.
It repalces your BT broadband modem, and allows you to connect, using Cat5 network cables, upto 4 computers directly to the internet, or each other, for windows shares.

Think you'll find that http://www.netgear.com/products/details/DG834.php would be better for info on the DG834.
I'll second the 'buy one' though, I've fitted loads and no trouble at all.
Like the kitten pic, sweet.

Yes its would.
Well spotted :-)
I know this is late into the discussion and I havent read everything but I have had awful problems with my wifi network and my cable connections to my router... solved today about 10 mins ago by downloading a little program called.
WinsockXPFix.exe
From t'net.
Run it- and it flushes all the crap out of your system and fixes small IP faults or other bits and bobs like that.
Run it and reboot.
Simple as.
Fixed mine straight up!!
Hope this works for you.

Tried that, but when i go to back up registry, every file says 'error' and wants to move to next.
Can't imagine i've messed with anything cos this pc was new only last week and i've only installed the basics.
My main concern is not for the client to connect to the internet through the host, it's getting the two machines to see each other on the network. Once i sort this i can get the file sharing going etc.

Get a router, as mentioned before. It'll Just Work (TM).
The router will do all the work for you. The windows boxes will obtain thier own IP addresses, apart from the file shares, you won't need to setup any other networking.
Trust Me. I've decades of experience at this.

If i go ahead and buy the netgear products, what do i need to do to uninstall/remove all the current components?
Also - the ex host pc (which is now the client) has all the printer sharing set up etc. How do i go about removing all this?
I'd rather clean everything up before swapping the components or will the netgear software do all this for me?
Thanks.

Set all the IP address on the PC's back to default so they obtain addresses by DHCP.
You don't need to install any software that comes with the Netgear. The instructions that come with the router are very good. Once you've connected it up with all the network cables, restarted the PC's so they pick up an IP address. Just point your web browser to the routers address (http://192.168.0.1 if memory serves right, see the instruction leaflet) and then configure the router for your ADSL. You may notice a short intermission while BT adjusts to the routers new MAC (identity) address.
Read the instructions! :-)
Your printer will still need to be connected to the PC (unless its posh and has a network port). Operate it as you would a windows file share.
Windows Shares
(I'm working from memory now, as I'm at work, and don't have a XP machine to hand...)
Probably one of the worst ways of sharing files. But to get it working: in the network properties set the PC's workgroup to the same, e.g TRUMPTON. and the PC's names to individuals: CUTHBERT and DRIBBLE.
Once set, restart the PC's again, once restarted, in the network browser, browse for your PC's you should see them.
Here's howtodo fileshares:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040
The printer works on the same princples.
Most problems are caused by the computer being setup wrong. Always check that the PC is set for DHCP. Automatically obtain an IP address. When you make changes to the IP address settings always restart the PC.

Upto step 5, then restart your computer.
Thanks for all your help guys.
I got matth (off this board) to come over and help.
Finally got it sorted, main problem was the firewall in Norton and a few other tweaks here and there.
Ended up using the Netgear router which worked a treat.
Anyhow, big thanks to Matt who i can wholeheartedly recommend to anyone needing his companies IT services.
