This site reminds me of a game on the Commodore 64 called Valhalla.

not 1 of the popular greats. I know.

What does it remind you of ?

First of all, brace yourself and hold on tight.
Take your time.
You've got to stir... gently and firmly.
Then string 'em along with some half-lies and evasions, and probe some deep dark holes.

O.k. I've tried to supress the geek within and have tried to make out that I'm a cool DJ, but I used to *love* Elite on the C64! Used to stay up until dawn playing that one, when I were wee lad. Anyhow I found a (spectrum) emulator running Elite online here (http://www.spectrum.lovely.net/Elite.html).

Enjoy, fellow geeks...

Elite was class!!! I also liked Frontier, Elite 2 on the Amiga. That game was massive, but was let down by the fact that that you could hardly move your ship. You had to leave it on autopilot. It's not much fun watching your computer play the game for you.

My geek moment was Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's revenge on the Speccy (got it on a Crash powertape, if anyone remembers those). I heard that there was a PC sequel to these. If anyone knows how I could get hold of it, I would be extremely grateful.

One of my favourites on the C64 was Bruce Lee by U.S Gold.

Every screen you entered along game the silly fat green man and skinny little ninja, you'd waste them and then they would be back 20 seconds later for more. :D

Heres an interesting 8 bit discussion site

Connection was far slower than 9600. I think 300 to 1200 was more the norm, depending on your modem.

And you could do file transfers at that speed. Remember we're only talking about 40Kb files.

I was 'on-line' with Prestel and Micronet 800 on my Spectrum was back in 1986, and on bulletin boards prior to that!

There's a bit about Compunet (a similar system) here:

Yes you can:

For the ZX Spectrum there's WorldofSpectrum (http://www.worldofspectrum.org/emulators.html) (and there're lots).

For the 8bit CBM machines, there's VICE (http://www.viceteam.org/) (as mentioned above)

The Amiga is best emulated by WinUAE (http://www.winuae.net/)

The ST is serviced by STEem Engine (http://steem.atari.st/)

For the Sega (Master/MK3/GG) there's Dega (http://www.finalburn.com/dega/)

I've even got a MTX512 emulator:)

Google is your friend with regard to teh emulators etc, which I don't think the Mods'll thank you for posting cos that kind of thing's a bit of a legal "grey" area afaik.

It depends on the emulator and game ROMs. The Spectrum is pretty good as far as legalities are concerned. Amstrad have given permisison for the ROMs to be used and many software authors have allowed their games to be downloaded.
