i'm planning a 2 week holiday in march for my girlfriend and i, but i'm unsure where to go

we're not expert hikers or anything, but we do have all the gear and go camping/walking a number of times a year so we like a good adventure! we'd like to head somewhere that has great scenic driving routes through mountainous regions where we can stop for the occassional hike. we don't like big cities, but on the other hand we don't want to stop in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere with no local community (as we enjoy going for a beer in the evening!)

i'm thinking along the lines of switzerland and austria, but obviously that's not very specific. i'm planning on using tripadvisor to help me figure out the accommodation etc, but i need to at least have an idea of where to head so thar i can do the research. i love driving so travelling between different areas or even countries isn't a problem. any recommendations would be much appreciated

cheers!

Southern Bavaria/Austrian border is beautiful, and good walking country too. Look for a place called Kossen just inside Austria, and Reit-im-Winkl in Germany and you'll not go far wrong. They're only about 5 miles apart and are both lovely places.

French Alps in Summer are ideal. Most villages have the ski lifts still working. Take the lifts up as high as they go and walk the rest. We based ourselves in Mortzine. You can take the high tracks up to the snowline and into Switzerland and back in day. The views over to Mont Blanc are stunning in the summer. Have a drive to Chamonix for the day. Take the Lift up to the Aguile Du Midi and sunbath on the observation platform 1000 ft below the summit of Mont Blanc. Breathtaking!

Sounds awesome. Be careful of those Bears whilst you are out there :)
