Does anyone have any first hand experience of advocates, how they work and how effective they are for the person they are representing as an advocate.

They should be very good at representing the person. Their whole job is to represent what the person wants and not what they think at all.

It may make a difference what sort of advocate but in general I'd say they're a very good thing.
