'Eagle eyed fans of watching organized religion get its disaster porn comeuppance will have noticed that there are no Islamic landmarks on the CGI chopping block.

That wasn't always the plan, however. Emmerich explained to SCI FI Wire that he had originally hoped the Kaaba, one of the holiest sites in the Islamic religion, would join the visual wrath of 2012, but that his co-screenwriter Harald Kloser talked him out of it:

"Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit ... but my co-writer Harald said I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie. And he was right. ... We have to all ... in the Western world ... think about this. You can actually ... let ... Christian symbols fall apart, but if you would do this with [an] Arab symbol, you would have ... a fatwa, and that sounds a little bit like what the state of this world is. So it's just something which I kind of didn't [think] was [an] important element anyway in the film, so I kind of left it out."'

Interesting link that Aim4.
Did any of the the religions that got the 2012 treatment complain?
Film makers must know if they offend Christians or Buddists, pretty much nothing will happen apart from the Vatican releasing a statement or the Dalai Lama providing a few words. Offend the Islamic world however will cause mass unrest and they may get the privilage of a fatwa.

Or murdered like Theo van Gogh.

And he didn't even use cgi to 'destroy' a monument - rather told a womans story of abuse etc under the cover of islam...

It's a sad shame that some people can't take things for what they are - but then it's not really a religious thing, it's a cultural thing, and some cultures just jump and attack quicker than others... The biggest seats of Christianity in Europe for instance are Italy, Spain and Ireland - none of the peoples from these countries are really known for their violent outbursts, even though a couple are known for their tempers... Also, Jews aren't so easily offended, as they know that words and stories are nothing compared to actions and reality...

So they assume something, which probably wouldn't have happened, and somehow that means the muslims are doing something wrong?

From past actions, it was an educated guess more than a merely assuming wrong of someone...

It would appear so auto.

It's Emmerich's perception of a problem that seems to be the issue, and being cautious of extremists.

I dont think any conclusion can be drawn about Islam as a whole (as usual).

I'm sure if he'd made a pro arbortion film, he may have been worried about a tap on the door by the likes of these Christian extremists:

Shelley Shannon, convicted of attempted murder of Dr George Tiller

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelley_Shannon

Scott Roeder who subsequentely went on to murder Dr Tiller

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Roeder

Paul Jennings convicted for the murder of Dr John Britton

I'm afraid there's nutters everywhere and of every racial, gender and religious persuasion!

To be fair, you can't possibly know that 'something' probably wouldn’t have happened.

Can you honestly say that some nut job (thereof) wouldn’t have taken offence if Emmerich had, for example, shown the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque? Remembering just how vocal some were when a drawing of the Prophet Mohammed was shown as a terrorist?

It's a silly film about a silly subject targeted at silly people. Who would want a silly fatwa from a silly religion from that?

A sense of perspective is required by silly commentators.
