Where is a good place to go wild camping without going to scotland?

I was thinking about going some place around Edale. I've been told you can camp near Kinder Scout but i've read its quiet boggy up there and not good for camping.

be carefull if you do go up and leave your route card at the ranger station.....enjoy it

I've done a lot of night walks on Kinder - great fun! Camp at Fieldhead and then set off towards Jacobs Ladder about 5pm.

I've seen a few wild campers on the bit of flat ground near Mermaids Pool. But on a mild night it's great to sleep on the soft heather under the stars, but you need a good couple of weeks of dry weather first.

Here's a link for a supervised Scottish one:

I've done a bit of wild camping in the past but not in this country because of the cold nights and I'm far, far too nesh. It's possible to get some ridiculously cheap flights these days and why suffer the cold when it's so easy to hop on a plane to a warmer climate. The best place I've ever wild camped was in the Dessert

Funnily enough, i've been thinking about doing the same thing recently abnd have been checking out Kinder Scout. Looks like a good place to try.

incidentally, does anyone know of any shortish walks that are good of an evening. I've been taking myself on random routes for the last few nights and wondered if anyone had any suggestions. :)

A few mates and myself camped out in Springwood, along the Chesterfield Canal near Shireoaks.

Could not believe how dark it was in there once the sun set.
We had a few portable BBQ's and some of those BBQ candles they sell in Wilkinson. 5 for £2....and they last for hours!

A few cans and some whiskey, then just chilled out listening to Pink
Floyd and Lep Zep.

It was a great night!

And all we left behind the next morning were our thanks!

I've done a lot of camping over the years and have many memorable memories of various places some good some bad. One field near Selby looked great and the cows in the field next to us thought we looked great and so barged through a hedge and came exploring our tents at about 3 am. The tents survived but an unlucky toilet roll had a distinct hoof print in it.
When we did the Cleveland way we set up camp in a little ravine type feature and awoke during the night as it rained and the ravine became a river bed.
Got slightly lost on the Dales Way and so knocked at a vicarage door to ask for directions and he kindly agreed we could spend the night next to his house, only problem was the graveyard was next to his house but at least we had a quiet night.

Check it out when it's in full spate after some good rain, with the wind blowing it 'back up'. Doesn't exactly do that, but there's a heck of a lot of spray from it!

Kinder Downfall - excellent in winter when it freezes up - Western Edge of the Scout overlooking the reservoir at Hayfield?

Ace. Cheers all!

Going up there in the next couple of weeks to do some photography, so I shall look out for it.

We really should organise (I use the term loosely) a forum walk one day! Any of you up for it?

:P

Oi! I'll have you know that I can go all fluffy and natural in the wild. In fact I am sporting my natural fluffy hair right now :)

It's kind of like camping, but you run round and go generally wild. :D

I'd love to go wild this weekend, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm going to Manchester for friends Birthday. :(

Though, I did get to do some camping last weekend in the lakes. Need more though.

I think it's a bit wet actually! We need to go in the middle of a heatwave if we're just going to lie under the stars.

I'm up for a forum walk sometime.

I've camped wild in the Black Mountains in Wales, on Dartmoor, and I once camped in the Peaks - I was cycling around the country, pitched my tent in some woods below the A57 fairly near the Snake Inn.

Indeed! The only problem is, I'm not holding out much hope for another heat wave this year. Where's summer gone? My head still thinks it's June :(

Next time we get a few hot days then (have faith, Mr Sumption!) we'll maybe all have to head for the hills!

I'm up for a walk sometime tho.
