I can't believe there are no replies to this thread.

I am going on holiday to Australia in April and wanted to enjoy our time at the Great Barrier Reef to the full so thought a few lessons in snorkelling before we went would be time well spent.

Any one any info or tips?

Try King Edward baths on Clarkhouse Rd. My kids had lessons there, but it was around 10 years ago.

Try tiger dive. They're a 5star padi dive centre based at Halfway. If your thinking of diving, highly recommended, you could choose any dive school as you will have to travel to dive site after initial training in a local pool, usually Ponds Forge. They've got a good team and all the gear you will require.

Not sure you really need lessons on snorkeling to be honest. I'd never done it before we went to the Maldives on our honeymoon and got along with it quite easily from the off. As long as you can swim, a brief "tutorial" on how to use flippers, the mask and the snorkel should be enough to get you started. The stronger a swimmer you are, the better and more confident you are likely to be. We were taken from our resort into some rather deep waters in the Indian Ocean and got to snorkel at the site of a shipwreck as well as at various corals in the North Attoll. It was a superb experience and something that I really want to do again in the future.

Diving, however, is a very different kettle of fish (excuse the pun). I've no experience in that respect, but upon enquiring at the diving centre on the island we stayed at they said that you obviously get to view the fish and coral at a greater depth, and therefore a different perspective - snorkelling for the most part allows you to see everything mainly from above (though you can get some nice front/side on views as well).

Good luck in finding some lessons. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Mark is a really nice guy, with a strong team of instructors, and likes to organise social events as well as diving trips. The main thing, with any club, is that you are confident with your instructors/dive school and any instructions before entering the water.
