gehickli 04-08-2005, 10:53 Hi
I am thinking about booking a city break and just wondered if anyone could recommend a nice city in europe to visit this time of year?
thanks
cgksheff 04-08-2005, 11:05 We have enjoyed Berlin on several occasions:

Stuff for everyone to do - I've been with my mother and also with friends. Its a fantastic city :) (weather may be better in other parts of the world!)
I've also been to Athens on a weekend break but I think that would be far too hot and dusty this time of year - we went in March and it was gorgeous!
Bruges is lovely any time of year - you can fly or book a mini cruise from Hull!
:)
KookyKoo 04-08-2005, 11:30 this time last year, I spent 6 days in Madrid. It's a fantastic city, lots to see and do. The people there are great and there's a good mix of cultures. I really rate it as a place. We went to a great outdoor pool one of the days and chilled out, it was very popular with the locals.
Other than that, Edinburgh's lovely (though with it being Festival time, you probably won't find anywhere with availability. Or that is affordable!), but I definitely recommend it.

Berlin I found to be OK but it is like any other big city. We stayed in Potsdam which is directly next to Berlin. It has some great buildings which are being wonderfully restored. The place seemed to have more character than Berlin. I'd definately go there again.
Prague is another place I would like to visit.
:)
I can definitely recommend Brugge in Belgium..
Easy to get to by ferry and transfer bus to the train station. A friendly place, mostly flat. Well worth going on are the mini coach tours run by Quasimodo (www.quasimodo.be ).
A few tips: If you want a good view of the place, go to the new concert hall and take the lift to the top (so much easier than climbing up the belfry steps!)
There's a wonderful restaurant "De vlaamsch pot" which serves huge portions - so abstain from chocolate in the afternoon.
You'll find the place receives hundreds of coach visitors each day, but if you go down a few side streets, you can find tranquility.
Don't try driving around Brugge. It's best walked.
Although Belgium is a bi-lingual country, they won't thank you for speaking French. English is widely spoken. Call it by the name Brugge when speaking to the natives.
It's a lovely place, and look for the heron by the Minnewatter.
Bruges and Antwerp are both extremely beautiful and worth spending a bit of time.
Guderian 04-08-2005, 12:01 Barcelona cannot be beaten. Total class, and beautiful.
Or if you want to got somewhere a bit different, try Ljubjiana in Slovenia. Quite small, but very attractive and amazingly friendly.
Agent Orange 04-08-2005, 12:02 I would recommend Barcelona. The city has got everything you could possibly want to make your city break enjoyable and the weather is great at this time of year. There are plenty of places to visit from Nou Camp Stadium through to Olympic complex, Segrada Familiar to Las Ramblas. And when you get tired of being a culture vulture you can always chill on beach which is walking distance from city centre.
JonJParr 04-08-2005, 12:05 If you're looking for culture, style and loads of history it's got to be Rome.
CaptainSwing 04-08-2005, 12:09 Another vote for Bruges/Brugge. Easy to get to from Sheffield via the ferry. Great for food, beer, soothing surroundings, generally chilling out. Visitor-friendly, English spoken everywhere. Small enough to walk round the main part, and if you want to go further the buses are frequent, reliable and 1 euro to anywhere in the city!

Have a look at the PO ferries that do very reasonable priced trips to Amsterdam . Bruges and Paris ( not a fan of France though)
