View Full Version : Where to get rid of foreign coins?
nightrider 04-08-2005, 10:47 Hi,
My bank refuses to change foreign coins back to uk money. Apparently they only take notes. Does anyone know of banks that will do this or anywhere else in Sheffield?
muddycoffee 04-08-2005, 10:51 If you have lot's why not offer them for exchange on the forum in for sale?. I regularly have a few euro coins left, and I just save them for next time as they would not be worth changing in any case.
Nobody has ever changed coins as far as I'm aware, mostly they just want you to put them into charity boxes.
It's important to get rid of them as you leave the foreign country..
cgksheff 04-08-2005, 10:52 Many charities will take them off your hands.
You will also see charity collection boxes at the airports and ,I think, Thomas Cook Exchange Counters.
I don't know whether you'll have any luck with this or not, but have you tried a post office which does foreign currency? - or possibly they only change notes, like the banks?
Give em to the next waster that has "lost" their bus fare when you are in town :D
I was going to say "Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal or Spain", but that really wouldn't be very helpful, would it? :p
I know of nowhere where you can change foreign coins. Only notes. The best thing to do is give them to charity. Lots of charities collect foreign coins for good causes. They won't pay you for them of course, but you'll go to heaven!
i was gonna say charity too, but beaten too it, by 5 or so people.
melthebell 06-08-2005, 12:51 find a foreigner for that countries cash and give em away :P
might take a while trudging round town asking everybody where theyre from mind :P

but how come they can change them and I cant? Is there some "charity only" money exchange place where you can change foreign coins back to something useful?
The banks can obviously change your money but do not do because people would come in with small amounts which would not be worth their time.

I don't know, but it probably has to with economies of scale. You go in there with three quids worth of shrapnel and get told to bu**er off, whereas Oxfam or other charities saves it up and goes in with 30 grands worth. The big charities are international, so they might pay it into their accounts in those countries.
