I know I need to click on the quote button, but how do I get a partial quote and how do I get it in the box with the white background

If you use the quote button it will show all the text of the relevant post inside your 'message reply' box with the "[]/quote[]" stuff at either end.
Just select and delete any text that you don't want to include.

You can manually produce a 'quote box' by typing [/quote] at the end of the text and [quote] at the start of the text that you want to appear in the box.

I've seen your post in the 'compensation' thread.

You have missed out the / (slash) from the [] bit at the end of the text.
