View Full Version : Learner Drivers - Whats the funniest thing you've seen one do?
I had stopped at the roundabout near the BP Petrol station at the top of Herries Road, near the Tesco and was watching for oncoming traffic.
There was a learner driver about to set off from the next exit - he suddenly jetted off at great speed for about 2 metres then halted and began kangarooing - the lorry behind him was going left and right trying to avoid him and I could see the old instructor in the passenger seat trying to calm him down.
I've got to admit - I didn't set off for a good minute myself - tears rolling down my face with laughter!!
valentine 04-08-2005, 10:05 On my first driving lesson the poor man took me up Bradfield where there is a nice long road, I went to start the engine, panic set in and I managed to flood the engine. We had to push the car until we came to one of the roads leading off so he could roll down hill and bump start it. (2 lessons later he said I ought to find another instructor)
steevie/d 04-08-2005, 10:25 i once seen a blonde woman open the the door to let the clutch out :D nice avatar lestat m8:thumbsup:
Thanks Steevie!
My sis once told me her mate was having her test and the examiner told her to take her next right - she did and went up someone's drive.
How's about this for a bit of parking?

NatalieSheff 05-08-2005, 15:04 i had just passed and gained a company car...idiots! i got to a roundabout and thought it was two lanes...but it was the other side of the road! oops
its true, you learn so much once uve actually passed ur test;)
That's not parking, it's dipping the headlights.
Or it could be an excessive 3 pint turn.
Dunno whether this one is an urban myth or not but heres one I heard.
Learner, guy in a jag and a cop car at the lights. Goes to green and learner stalls.
Starts the car but stalls it again.
Guy in the jag gets out and starts to go over,so the copper puts his PA on and says "would the gentleman in the jaguar please remember he was a learner once as well". Suitably chastised, Mr Jag gets back in his car.
However, copper forgets to turn off PA, so when learner stalls for a third time he hears "I don't believe it the dozy **** has done it again".
:D
When I was a learner on my first test I was a bag of nerves....it was lunchtime and all the older schoolkids from the local secondary school were on the crossing waiting to crossover to the 'chippy'....
My eyes were transfixed on the lights as soon as the green man started flashing and the lights changed to flashing amber I went to move off....the examiner pulled on the handbrake....
lucky he did as there was a really old man walking with two sticks still on the crossing.....needless to say I failed!!
:hihi:
I saw a fire engine once drive straight over a roundabout once (as in over the top of it, through the bushes and off the other side) then park up. It was in fromt of me while I was taking lessons and my instructor and I watched with open mouths.
My instructor made me pull up behind them to ask if all was well, it turned out to be a training vehicle with the driver sitting some kind of avanced driving test - his instructor has asked him to "Go straight through this roundabout" and the trainee has taken it a bit too literally:hihi:
*Twinkle* 05-08-2005, 17:17 When I was a learner, I once stalled the car three times in succession, holding up about 20 cars for 3 entire rotations of traffic lights at the manor top. Oh dear!
Also tried reversing with the handbrake on, doing a hill start in 3rd gear aswell as thinking there was a 6th gear and ending up putting the car in reverse (travelling at 65mph).... (All in the last week)
 Oh dear lol

I did that
Whilst learning to drive, a good few years ago, on one of my first lessons 'in traffic'.
I had to drive down Ecclesall Rd on a Saturday afternoon, towards town, around Moore St roundabout and back again.
When it was my turn at the roundabout I kangaroo'd out and promptly stalled across the 3 lanes of traffic! My lovely instructor didn't bat an eyelid and calmly talked me through starting up again and we went on our way.
I do remember a strange aroma in the car for the rest of the lesson though.
Greybeard 05-08-2005, 21:48 About 20 years ago now a friend of my wife's drove her hubby's car up the tailgate and into the back of a removal van !! They had to find about £100 for the repair of some antique furniture.
About a week after she finally passed her test she got into the inside lane on the Park Square roundabout in the rush hour and after four or five complete circuits a police car lurking at the bottom of Duke street took pity on her and guided her off with all lights flashing :D
There was a learner braking while driving UPHILL on Upper Albert Road a couple of weeks ago. Needless to say, the journey took some time and my partner and I were stunned.

If this isn't true ....it should be!!

I think this is a common thing when first learning... when I first got fast enough to finally get into 5th lol, I put it in reverse. My instructor had clutched the same time as me and then kept his foot down, knew exactly what I was going to do!
Once saw one very confused learner forget to apply the brakes.. Just avoided a collision with a bus and the instructor left looking very pale...
redrobbo 07-08-2005, 23:34 On my driving test in Middlesbrough, the examiner asked me to reverse around a corner. I became extremely anxious to make sure that I got it right, but fluffed it good and proper. I rounded the corner with such speed, that I mounted the kerb - leaving only one wheel on the road! As I careered around the corner, this poor woman managed to grab the buggy she was pushing, and jump onto some door-steps for safety.
I casually announced that I didn't think I'd done that manoeuvre very well, and asked if I could try it again. "I don't think so" said the examiner, adding "and do you think you could now get this car off the pavement and continue to drive on the road please?" Of course I was disappointed to fail my test, but looking back, I can now see the funny side of the examiner's remarks. :hihi:
PS I passed next time.......in Redcar!
Oh, dear oh dear, Lottie as a learner... well actually, Lottie as a qualified driver...
When I was learning I hated roundabouts. I went onto one and that was it, my head was all over the place, I once managed to get the whole roundabout to myself because I was all over it!!!!
But then, the other day I was in a rush, having a very bad morning and had to go to Firth Park for something for college.
That morning I actually managed to hit a wheelie bin - but the best bit was, it was on the pavement! I was so humiliated.
I passed 2 and a half months ago.
This little fella is learning to drive at a very young age...has to be male as he can't do smooth gear changes....:hihi:

DragonofAna 19-08-2005, 21:24 Panic on the driving test doing a turn in the road cos a bus was coming and totally forgetting what I was supposed to be doing ... oh no - that was me. ...
Er - I saw a learner get out to measure the distance between the car and the kerb cos him and his instructor were having a proper argument about it. the same person was so sick of his instructor that he refused to continue - but at the time the car was still moving. Hmmmm - no sorry - that was me as well.
Er!!!! No - never seen anyone learning to drive do anything stupid.
Dragon
On my first test i went the wrong way round a roundabout.................................i failed:(
Cardinal 19-08-2005, 21:32 I didn't do anything but....during my first test the electric window on the passenger side (and therefore where the examiner was sitting) fell out of its socket. Had to stop and jam it back up with some folded over paper. Think the examiner felt sorry for me and passed me!! ;)

Don'y all cars have some sort of mechanism to stop this. Either Lift / Push down gear stick or the "collar" system on Vauxhalls..
sniperwookie 20-08-2005, 16:40 Nope. Some do, some are just on the gate.
I managed to do that when I was learning too, while doing about 70. My instructor wasn't pleased, but it was only a Kia Pride (nothing to be proud of in my books!).
I should add, I don't think you can actually get the car into gear, not at high speed anyway, but it does make a lovely crunching sound! :)
