View Full Version : Strange mile markers above Oughtibrige - anyone know?

On the little B-roads between and around Oughtibridge and Bradfield some of the crossroads are marked with a series of what look like hand-carved stone mile markers/signs. They are definitely a bit out of the ordinary - I've never seen anything like them before I don't think. Does anyone know anything about them? How old they are? Who put them there?

I have put a picture of one of them on a web page if anyone wants to take a look but unfortunately I can't post it here properly - not enough posts in this forum yet - just add the usual 3 w's in front of the line below and I promise you no adverts! :-)

I think they date back to when farmers/traders were on the move to local markets via old packhorse routes between Yorkshire/Lanc/Cheshire. On the Moors above Langsett is Cutgate an old route to Penistone. The other way is to look at clues around villages are street names like Psalter Lane and even Salt Box Lane at Grenoside.Hope this Helps

What was that, 30 mins from posting to getting a definitive reply? I knew asking on here was the right thing to do! Thanks for that.

In recent times some of these stones have been re-fitted into their original positions.

Some had been used to repair walls, thrown into ditches and some even fitted in another location.

The Bradfield council has done some good work restoring these stones along with stone troughs in their jurisdiction, that is the one's that have not been stolen.
