Hi,

Most scuba places around will provide a 'try dive' type scenario where you can go and find out if it is for you! It should be, its great, but no harm having a try first.

There are a number of BSAC clubs around the area -> http://www.bsac36.org.uk/ is a sheffield central (I guess?) one.
Then there are a number of PADI shops around the area that also teach.

They are two different approaches to training you, which is best depends on what is best for you. Some people like PADI, some BSAC. BSAC works for me.... :)

If you go to http://www.bsac.com/ you can find out your local club and make contact with them to arrange a try dive. Other wise, google PADI and your town / area and I'm sure you'll find one.

Good luck with it........... :)

PADI is more widely recognised worldwide! its an international certificate.

Ive been places where BSAC members are turned away as its not really an international certificate, hence been British sub aqua club

The try dives are probably in the region of £10 per go.
The basic PADI qualification prob costs around £200.
First year membership to BSAC costs around £220.

The main differences between the two are:
PADI is one qualification for your money, BSAC you can do as much as you can in a year.
PADI doesn't need money 2nd year unless you want another qualification
For BSAC you'd pay £150 to remain an active BSAC member - I think.
For PADI you need to pay for any qualifications you want, BSAC you pay for the club membership.
PADI is commercial, though shops prob still have a club to organise trips.
BSAC isn't commercial. I think.

I think both have their positives and negatives. Money comes into your decision, it's not cheap either way!! Whatever anyone decides, try both. Go along to your local PADI and BSAC dives, meet the people, have a drink with them. And let both sides try to 'sell' their side of the argument to you :)

BSAC 36 meets Ponds Forge every Weds night, about 20:15 ish. But ring first!
Hallam meet also on a Weds - but I'd assume you'd need to be a student.
Scuba Duba (Nether Edge) meet every month or so - see their web site.
There are others!!!

But I'm new to it all, this is just me interpretation of the differences!! If I was you I'd ring the experts and arrange a Try Dive!!

Its lots of BSAC people saying why their way is right, but its quite open minded about the differences between the two!

Contact Tiger Dive at SDS Water Sports Halfway or Martin at Dive Scuba, Ecclesfield07846642162. Both really good PADI dive clubs.

The only 5 Star PADI centre in the central Sheffield is http://www.learn2dive.co.uk/

They do Discover SCUBA Diving sessions at Graves Leisure Centre pool for £15. I believe that cost is refundable against the cost of a PADI Open Water Diver course if you decide that you like it.

The next sessions are Sunday's 13th and 20th December, give them a ring on 0114 2332995.

There are several 5 star dive clubs in Sheffield , some of which do pool sessions at Pond's Forge as well as other local pools. Which ever club you decide to use make sure that you are comfortable with the instructor and any equipment that you use. It doesn't really matter where your club is, most of your open water diving will be at inland dive sites.
