View Full Version : Internet explorer 8
CT4UChris 07-11-2009, 11:13 Hi all,
I've resisted letting windows update install IE8 for months now, but feeling like I should give in and just do it.
Anyone suggest any problems, etc with it or is it better than IE7?
Also, can I revert back if I don't like it? (IE7 seemed to prevent you from going back to 6)
Cheers, C
zongamin 07-11-2009, 14:35 Its still IE, therefore still a virus and spyware magnet.
I wouldn't use IE to check the weather, never mind anything secure.
Jcoventry 07-11-2009, 15:37 Firefox is still better.
Firefox is still better.
Opera is still better :P

You can uninstall it if you need to.

sparklygem 07-11-2009, 21:28 I use google chrome, i think its better than firefox
IE8 > IE7. I'm a FF user but am pleasantly surprised that for the most part it renders pages correctly.
IE6 isn't a web browser, it's a piece of ****.
melthebell 08-11-2009, 08:35 Opera is still better :P
another one for opera here :)
dunno about IE not used it for years :P
IE8 is more standards compliant, extendable, secure and faster than any previous version.
zongamin 08-11-2009, 17:50 IE8 is more standards compliant, extendable, secure and faster than any previous version.
But still not as good Firefox - so why bother with it?
swarfendor43 08-11-2009, 19:27 Try the latest Opera (10.1) or even Safari 4.3 something or Firefox 3.5.4 but in the main I'm with sidbobs!

IE6 isn't a web browser, it's a piece of ****.I beg to differ.....
I use IE6 and i think its the best of the IE series :) (I use MyIE2 in front though)

You must be joking....
Even Microsoft doesn't want you use IE6 anymore.
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9136739/Microsoft_Friends_don_t_let_friends_use_IE6_
"Friends don't let friends use IE6," said Amy Bazdukas, Microsoft's general manager for Internet Explorer (IE)
zongamin 09-11-2009, 05:25 But Firefox isn't as good as Opera, so why bother with FF?
I don't like the clumsy ad block system, or the lack of useful extensions.
Or the horrible email and torrent clients that come with it.
I stopped using it around version 6 (I think) when Firefox became the better browser for me.
HeadingNorth 09-11-2009, 05:47 IE8 is more standards compliant, extendable, secure and faster than any previous version.
That is rather like saying that my dog's new turd is more highly polished than any of his old ones...

It's people like you holding back web development. Have you noticed the warning signs on youtube etc when you visit with IE6? They're stopping support of it. Awful, awful browser.

So true - have a read of this for reasons why

swarfendor43 09-11-2009, 22:02 Hi zongamin,
Opera has come along way since 6.0 in fact its resume download function was out before Firefox's!
Best regards,
swarfendor43
zongamin 10-11-2009, 06:15 I've tried all the new versions - including 10 - but end up deleting them after a quick look.
It doesn't seem to offer anything to me over Firefox and the extensions I use (ABP, NoScript etc) keep me using FF.
It's people like you holding back web development. Have you noticed the warning signs on youtube etc when you visit with IE6? They're stopping support of it. Awful, awful browser.I really dont care about Youtube.......
IE6 is just as good as any other browser... ITS THE USER THAT MAKES THE BROWSER SECURE OR UNSECURE MATE!

You're wrong.
IE6 is not only less secure, it doesn't support new web standards, and fails to conform to existing ones. This forces developers to have to spend time on hacks redeveloping sites just so they work on IE6.
EVEN MS doesn't want you to use it. Using it out of choice is beyond stupidity.

Completely wrong on the first one and partially wrong on the second.
Seeing as you've resorted to shouting I can't even be bothered to tell you why.
Chitty-Chuck 12-11-2009, 16:24 Right i have just gone on msn.co.uk and found the new Internet Explorer 8, is it worth downloading ect?
There is a thread about this just a few post down in this section....go have a read
Internet explorer is best software. Now those updates will come to you. Web Slices provide up-to-the-minute information on the sites you care about most in one convenient place on the new Favorites bar.
zongamin 13-11-2009, 08:43 You won't find many people recommending Internet Explorer.
There are FAR better and safer alternatives in either Firefox, Opera or Chrome.
I use IE8 but have not been able to get ActiveX to work since so I can't access Microsoft Update site or get it to verify my MS Office 2007 is genuine so it tells me it is not a genuine copy and displays a warning every time I run it, I do receive the MS monthly updates OK though.
I feel most comfortable with Firefox with NoScript & ******* plus enabled - read this: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9140768/Flash_flaw_puts_most_sites_users_at_risk_say_resea rchers. Only ever use Internet Explorer at work - & that's 'cos that's all we have.

Thanks, I kind of empathise with your comments, but the reason I have to consider it is in order to check that my website looks correct with it.
Whether we like ti or not, it has lots of users, and if a company website looks wrong viewed with a popular browser, then you're dead in the water really.
Cheers, C
CT4UChris 14-11-2009, 23:30 Opera is still better :P
I'm like you sidbobs, I lilke opera too. Although I must say I'm a bit brainwashed as the missus is the techy in our house and she wil only use opera.
Cheers, C
CT4UChris 14-11-2009, 23:32 You can uninstall it if you need to.

You're not on your own Dude. IE6 is still widespread. Referring to my reply above, it's also another version that we have to check the website on for compatibility just for that reason.
cheers, C

Web Application Security Trends Report
Of the browser vulnerabilities, the biggest surprise was Firefox that had 44% more vulnerabilities than the other browsers. Another surprise was Safari – as it usually contains few vulnerabilities, but came in at 35%; significantly higher than Internet Explorer (15%).

I have tried Firefox 3.5 but nothing improved, defraged HDD, reset all IE8 settings, not memory or CPU problem, even tried a new notebook with clean XP installed so looks like the fault lies with ADSL MAX from Virgin, it shows 0.9 to 1.2Mbps and speed test shows between 0.7 and 0.9Mbps, BT test says upto 512Kbps on my line that is why Virgin sold me ADSL MAX 1.5Mbps which I believe is rebadged from BT Wholesale. Does anyone else have problems with ADSL MAX?

Saw this the other day in the The Register - the numbers alone mean nothing without knowing the level of a threat.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/10/web_security_survey/
Even the writer of the report uses Firefox as his default browser.
I'm glad that IE is Windows only, so I never have to use it.

It's widespread in big organisations where it takes lots of cash and time to upgrade infrastructures. That's the only reason why it's still used so much.

Reported vulnerabilities that have been fixed. What's the problem?
waddler8 16-11-2009, 18:04 Reported vulnerabilities that have been fixed. What's the problem?
People are always being told how insecure IE is and how they should switch to browser x, y or z.
Aside from whether or not those vulnerabilities are being actively targeted in the wild, or how quick a vendor is to patch them (Mozilla are reportedly quicker to patch than MS, incedently), it's worth pointing out that all browsers have at some stage vulnerabilities that need patching.
As these show, all have had critical vulnerabilities that if exploited can lead to system access from a remote source ->
IE (http://secunia.com/advisories/product/21625/?task=advisories_2009)
Firefox (http://secunia.com/advisories/product/25800/?task=advisories_2009)
Opera (http://secunia.com/advisories/product/26745/?task=advisories_2009)
Chrome (http://secunia.com/advisories/product/25720/?task=advisories_2009)
Safari (http://secunia.com/advisories/product/25519/?task=advisories_2009)
Whatever browser you use, keep it patched and up to date.

You speak wise words :)

I beg to differ zongamin, Opera's inbuilt email is actually very good (I've used it for best part of 5 years trouble free) and now offers rich text.
Both Operas email and Bit torrent are optional anyhow.
As for Firefox, I still use Firefox as a back up when the odd interactive content won't function in Opera, but overall I still much prefer Opera over Firefox.
