View Full Version : Have you walked around Ladybower?
I have agreed to meet some friends to walk around Ladybower this evening ending with a meal and a pint at the Yorkshire Bridge Pub. My memories of Ladybower are that it is v large ...anyone know how far this walk is and how long it's likely to take? What have I let myself in for?!!

I ran around it once - took a good 2/3 hrs.
BoroughGal 03-08-2005, 13:55 I think It's 8 mile from one end (the bridge) to the other (the bus terminus). Then, obviously, account for the 8 mile back again....
I've driven round in my car and clocked it up. Now sure how far it is as a round trip becuase cars can only go as far as the terminus.
Thanks! maybe they mean walk around the area rather than around the resevoir, I hope so, or I may need an ambulance to meet me as well as a pint at the pub.
I just looked on multimap, its lookds about 4 miles long not 8! Therefore about 8 all the way round.
This of course depends whether you're walking around the bottom bit or the bit that goes up towards derwent. If you walked round the whole thing then that is a very long way...
BoroughGal 03-08-2005, 14:28 Is that 4 miles as the crow flies or to walk around the path?

Using OS maps (via Memory Map on the PC) I get a complete route around Ladybower (but not including Derwent etc.) to be 6.74 miles (using the roads/paths closest to the shoreline and walking across the top of the earth dam).
Hope that helps.
:)
I think the pub maybe shut before you finish....have the meal and the pint first, talk about your route, talk about your route a bit more then come back another day when you have more time on your hands....
dont care how long it is, this post has inspired me to take the long suffering "she who must be obeyed" for a spot of lunch tomorrow.
have no intention of walking further than the car park of the pub.
Thank you everyone, we actually walked around the back of the Ladybower Inn which gave us spectacular views over the resevoir. The round walk took about 2 hrs 15 mins. We then drove to the Yorkshire Bridge pub where we had to wait over half an hour for a table then half an hour for our meal. The food was wonderful though well worth the wait.

Is that including walking over the top end of Landbower at Fairholmes and back down tho the road again? Ie the full circumference of the entire dam?
I 'm not sure of the names of the places, although I did see a sign for Cut Throat Bridge, but no we didn't walk all around the Dam we stayed on the same side of the road as the Ladybower Inn.

You're thinking of the road alongside Ladybower, Derwent and Howden.
The uppermost dam is Howden - this is the one you are alongside when you reach the bus terminus. The one below that is Dewent - that's the one who's dam wall towers over the visitors centre at Fairholmes (where you can feed the birds ;)).
Ladybower is the lowest one and stretches from the visitors centre right under the A57 to the earth dam near Bamford.
3 dams in a sort of stepped layout. :) All known as the Derwent Valley.
after driving past this place for 20 years - i visited for lunch today , nice sarnie with a pleasant view over Ladybower.
thank u for bringing it to my attention.

No, the 6.74 miles I quoted is just the "southern loop", crossing over the Ashopton (?) viaduct, not venturing up to Fairholmes...
...the distance around the whole of the Ladybower reservior, including up to Fairholmes would be 11.7 miles.
:)
Johnnywarren 04-08-2005, 15:13 in the week you can pretty much go anywhere - so drive round for a bit, check the place out before you start to walk - but watch out for cretinous cyclists riding 3 or 4 wide!
