I am in the processing of buying a house and the mortgage people have said they need a 'damp proof and timber report' from a 'damp proof specialist'.
Can anyone help me find one? Should I have to pay for the report or will I get a free estimate of work to be done and cost?
Cheers

Mark Jones 2748091. Been in the business ages & great work at low costs.
I had to get two damp proof surveys done as they wouldn;t accept the first one because the firm were not accredited to some "Damp proof association" Can't remember the actual name of the body, but there is like a proffesional instituition for wood and damp proofing.
So I would say to ask the motgage company what they want.

I can vouch for Sentinel as well. They are very professional and fairly priced.

Try Higgenbottom and Lascelles. I'm in the process of buying a house, and have also been asked for Damp and Timber report. H&L did the report (free), and gave me a competitive quote. Whats more, they were quick (they called the estate agent for the keys, and got the report done within a couple of days).
Before doing all this, I had called my mortgage lender and asked if there were any special qualifications needed (like needing Corgi for gas stuff), and they told me that they just needed someone who advertise as a damp specialist.
Change of heart ... when it came to having the work done, it didnt go quite as smoothly ... the day they were supposed to start they were working on another job, and had thought that they'd get around to me later (i was waiting at the house to give them the keys!). They didnt start when they said they would, they made a real mess of it, they had my keys for a total of 3 weeks (they told me on the 1st day that it would be a 3 day job), and then when I asked for the keys back it took me 6 days to get them (after ringing them EVERY SINGLE DAY).

After sales customer-care from Sentinal does not exist.
They did our place and 95% was very good, just like the others say. However a small section of wall failed. The owner came out to look at it, agreed and promised a written follow-up and a date for it to be corrected... but nothing ever happened.
We've made numerous calls and even sent a letter (recorded delivery) which after another call, the receptionist confirmed receiving and still nothing. This has been on-going for 6 months and we're now looking to contact a solicitor about them.
i`ve posted else where about this company, BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!
Beware . lots of people have been conned either by systems that don't work eg electro-osmotic or systems that don't need replastering. Best way is to get advice from someone who is independent and not looking for work .

Ditto - posted elsewhere.
We've contacted consumer direct, followed all their instructions and now they are refering the case to Trading Standards.
I hear reports that they may be financially struggling, but I cannot confirm that. Nevertheless, a courtesy call or reply wouldnt have gone a miss if they were genuinely a good reputable company.

Our surveyor recommended a firm called Protemp.
We got them in and they did a grand job.

There are so many causes of damp. Condensation, spalled and weathered bricks, poor pointing etc all cause penetrating damp
I work for a company that gives free surveys n free no obligation quotes (valid for 12 months) called Protectacoat. Been in business 28 years with hundreds of satisfied customers around sheffield.
If you're interested, send me a private message! Cheers.
