Hi All

I am trying to find out more etchers and gilders in Sheffield in 19th century. Is there documentaion about this trade and/or register(s) of etchers/gilders. My great x 2 grandfather Wiilliam Bird was an etcher/gilder as shown in 1841, 1851 and 1861 Censuses, and my great garndfather was shown as an etcher aged 14 in 1861 census.

Any help greatly appreciated
regards

John

Don't know if this helps but my grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather, were silversmith's and engravers in sheffield. This was for most of the 19 century, There surname was Memmott, not sure where abouts in sheffield they were, but do know they did go to the Cutlers Hall a lot, for Dinners and meetings of people in the cutlery trade.

hiya i've just looked at my 1894 street directory for the surname Memmot silversmiths and there were Memmot bros silversmiths 20 cambridge street.
there were other names in the family that lived at 220 albert road they were all of the same family(memmot bros silversmiths) arthur, herbert, walter g, william james, and a mrs , mary emma, all of the same address . at the address on albert rd they were all listed as cutlery manufactures, dont know if it is of any use maybe?
ps there were 13 different companys at no 20, and at no 12 was listed a robert macdonald hairdresser.
