I think there is a kiddies farm at Chatsworth too, but you have to pay and it is a bit far away.

Graves Park is good, and there's Butterfly World at Anston/Aston (sorry, always get those two place mixed up!)
That's quite good - farm yard animals and tropical creepy crawlies aswell. There's also a playground, a cafe and a picnic area.
And if you want to go a bit further, there's Sundown Pet's Corner out at Rampton.

Doh, anyone would think I have kids...

The buttefly place is realy good, they have leaf cutter ants and iguanas running about the place. When we went you could hold the giant cockroaches, giant millipede and a tarantula (though why you would want to is beyond me). They also had a birds of prey "show" where bloody great big eagles swoop towards a screaming child holding a bit of stewing steak.

was fun.

We went to the kiddies farm at chatsworth a couple of years ago and it was a rip off, we got charged about £7 just to see a few animals that you can see in any field.

The prices in the ice cream/gift shop were also a rip off.

There used to be a small farm type thing at Wentworth garden centre, about 25p to get in and 40p for a bag of food to feed the animals, they had pigs, goats, ponies, chickens, rabbits.

I managed to avoid going to this place for many years by telling people it was a pet cemetry.

The Chesnut Centre near Castleton http://www.ottersandowls.co.uk/ is well worth a visit. It's a drive out but there are plently of animals to look at particularly Otters and Owls. It's in a great setting and would be worth taking a picnic and making a day of it. I'm a big kid and really enjoyed it here.

Chatsworth isn't a rip off ,it's fantastic, about £3 - £4 pound each, family tickets also available. Selection of farm animals, fish you can feed, and guinui pig handling times. But there is also a fantastic wooden climbing frame, slide tree house adventure play area. There is a lot of water and sand based play,so take your own buckets and spades and spare clothes. It can get busy in school holidays, so I would suggest going in a group(which may also be cheaper) as it is hard to keep an eye on 3 kids when it's busy.I would agree that the cafe is a rip off,so take a picnic. Also the only toilets are at the entrance so that can be difficult to get to from the play area.
The otter and owl sanctuary is o.k but not a patch on chatsworth.I think Whirlow Hall farm has Fayre soon, that is also quite good.
If you want a free day out, just go for a walk in the country.
I live in Bradwell, you can walk up my road go past chickens(sometimes ponies),see horses, sheep, cows and goats.Obviously theres no guaratees how close to the path they are,but it's good to see them in thier homes. There are also two parks, and four pubs, and a fantastic chippy!

Try Cannon Hall, a great day out for all ages. Lots of animals, good play area for children. Great Hall to wander around. Large restaurant and shop. Only about 30 mins from Sheffield. We went last summer hols, was only £2.50 entrance. Good value. They have a web site.

I miss going to places like Graves Park, although they always give me a terrible urge to buy pets.

Must...resist...

The rose garden cafe at Graves Park has reopened, and there are piglets only a few days old at the rare breeds centre there (and a red deer fawn, some older piglets and, as usual, dozens of ethiopian goats)

Haven't been to Heeley city farm for a while, they have fewer animals, but then again Graves park has 40 different kinds of chicken, which is interesting if you are a chicken breeder.

The butterfly house rocks, although the 'falconry' display isn't much cop, but the ferret roulette is a blast for the kids (and they all love ferrets).

If you want a little drive out there is a gem of a place called Borckholes farm at Blaxton/branton in Doncaster, its just off the M18 got a large horse riding school on one side and loads of animals (ostrich's, raccoons, usual farm stuff, rhea's, zebra)

Had a very enjoyabvle afternoon there
