I beleive it was a good fight. David Haye was a bit Harsh in calling his opponent ugly before the game .. but overall his strategy and patience was really good !!

Protos I take it then that you haven't seen a great deal of fights in your time:!:

It was no Holyfield vs Bowe or Ali Frasier.
Haye had a decent last round and well done for him for winning the crown, but neither Haye or Valuev actually threw much leather that landed.

A good result for British boxing and Haye but overall it was a poor fight.

Lol. You are right KingMaker. I probably watch 4-5 annually !

Overall I was talking about the strategy .. end of the day Haye was figting someone who looked like a BEAST ! Few good punches from VALUEV would have good enough ! :)

If you take a look at some of the other forums on the internet you will find that opinion about the fight is largely divided.
Those that say that Haye fought a great fight are equally matched with those that say that Haye ran too much to be a worthy champion.

Now true the art of boxing is to hit and not be hit, but In my opinion that means skillfully evading your opponents blows, whilst still being in punching range rather than run away from your opponent so he can't hit you.

Haye employed a similar tactic that Tommy Morrison used in his World Title fight against Big George Foreman.

Foreman was fat and slow and lumbering but at 40+ could still knock out the young guys with his mighty power.
Morrison took advantage of the fact that Foreman wouldn't be fast enough to catch up with him if he ran away from him.
And that's what he Morrison did ran from George and refused to stand and trade with George.
Morrison won on points but the victory was poorly received by boxing fans watching in the stadium and on tv around the world.

Haye, just like Morrison won by exploiting his opponents lack of speed around the ring, a legitimate tactic to use, but just not a popular one with fans.

The best fights are the ones where both boxers aren't afraid to get within the others boxing range and then let the fists fly, sadly for me and many others watching aside from the last round Haye didn't want to do that on Saturday.

I think David Haye could have been on the front foot a bit more, if anyone read the piece in the mirror today from Baz Mcguigan he actually thought Haye was lucky to get the verdict.
Commenting that it was a good result for boxing Haye been able to speak English and will be a better promting prospect across the water where as Valuev wouldn't have been.

@ Kingmasker - I guess you are right.

But end of the day you would run around the ring for a World Champion Title. Its equally important, so I guess that justifies it.

Barry Mcquigan wasn't alone in thinking that Haye hadn't done enough.
Jim Watt was also of the view that Valuev won the fight and the Telegraph boxing correspondent had the fight even.

Remember that one of the official judges had it 114 -114 even and given that in anyones view Haye definitely won the last round ,that means that that particular judge had Valuev winning going into the last round.
It wouldn't have been too far fetched to have called the fight for Valuev.

People often forget that boxing is scored on a round by round basis and not which puncher lands the most cleaner punches in the fight.

I remember the outcry after Lewis fight with Holyfield was declared a draw and the criticism that Irish Judge Larry O' Connell got because he scored the fight even at 115- 115.

A tabloid, the Sun I think, ran the story "Larry O Connell" admits I got it wrong.
If you actually read the article and the quotes of Larry O connell, he admits to no such thing, he said he scored the fight on a round by round basis and really didn't know who was winning on his score card until the scores were totaled at the end of the fight.
Larry O Connell did say Lewis looked the stronger but that is totally different from saying Lewis won more rounds!
I happen to agree with O Connell's verdict when I was watching the fight.
I even showed the full fight to one of my friends and asked him to score the fight strictly on a round by round basis, he also agreed that the fight was really close.

Back to Haye though, sure he looked the faster and more accurate when he did land but did he really win more rounds than Valuev?.....the debate goes on.
