View Full Version : A question about Michael Jackson

This may sound a really, really stupid question. On the other hand, you might understand why I'm somewhat puzzled.

I have infront of me, the CD case to The Essential Michael Jackson, a 2 CD set containing...., well, that's all obvious really isn't it?

I like to read songwriting credits and this is where I am confused. Aware that Wacko, in the main, writes his own material, many songs are credited to Michael J. Jackson. Some are credited to Michael Jackson. Am I to presume that the two credits are the one and the same person?

Y'see, what's crossing my mind is that Michael Jackson was performing whilst still in his diaper and it's fair to assume he was a little too young to write his own stuff. Didn't his father write songs? Thus, what is his father's name?

The thing I'm getting at, is: Is the real songwriter Jacko's father, and 'Michael Jackson' (no middle J) wrote just the odd song.

That way, Michael (J) Jackson wrote most of the songs and we're left to assume that that means the singer/performer Jacko, without questioning any further.

I apologise for how messy this all sounds. I've never seen Michael play an instrument and find it incredible that a non-muso can write so many top choons.

His father is called Joe Jackson so I guess that really doesn't help much. :(

OMG! Suprised this was on the Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson)

(it did say things about what he'd been in court for in a nasty way when I looked before.)

On the contrary, ickle, it helps a lot.

That means simply, that for some songs Wacko used the song-writing credit Michael J Jackson, and for a few others, he dropped the J.

Thank you.

I would say it's the same person (Michael Jackson) although alot of his biggest album Thriller, was written by a guy called Rod Temperton.

The Motown music was written by motown writers.

probablt smoky robinson or quincy jones or someone

The first solo album Micheal wrote was Off the wall.

I was a big Jackson fan till about the Dangorous album.

It's all quite simple really - as Ousetunes say's MJ used Michael Jackson for some credits and Michael J Jackson for others purely because he wanted to.

At the time of MJJ Productions in the late 80's - Michael Jackson was branding alot of his stuff with the MJJ logo and also used this for some of his song writing credits too.

The two credits are for the same person as far as I know and his father never wrote any of his music - especially on his solo albums.

I heard that "Blame it on the Boogie" was written by a Sheffield bloke called Mick Jackson. Not sure if this ties in with your songs?

Rod Temperton from Cleethopes

page here (http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Rod%20Temperton.html)

Quote from that page

"His songwriting skills were soon noticed by Quincy Jones who hired him to write songs for an album he was producing for Michael Jackson.

Rod ended up writing 'Rock With You', 'Baby Be Mine', 'The Lady In My Life' and the title track of Michael's 'Off The Wall' album in 1979, together with the title song 'Thriller' of his follow-up."

Why does that stop it being essential ??... surely any songs from any album add to it BEING essential ?

His last album Invincible sold 2 million in the USA alone - 8 million worldwide. . . . I wouldn't exactly say thats a poor sales record. :|

Panda, it's actually a pretty good album if you listen to it. The first 3 tracks are amazing dance tracks that should be played at clubs all over the place! - there's 'You rock my world' which is a class hit.

'Cry' and the cool Santana riff on 'Whatever happens'.

All in all, it's a great album, but because of the fight with Sony, he was only ever allowed to release the 'You rock my world' song as a single.

I know that you don't like MJ Panda, and we've had plenty of heated discussions about him and his music - but since you said you'd be buying the essential collection, I'd be curious to know what your favourite Michael Jackson song is . . . . .
