View Full Version : Wrap up, does it work?
lemongrass 05-11-2009, 15:05 You'll all maybe think I'm mad but being Bonfire Night thought I'd post it anyway. I seem to remember reading somewhere that a dog behaviourist said that wrapping a dog in a sort of bandage seems to calm them. Anyone else heard of this? I suppose a childs snug Tshirt might have the same effect [if it's true], anyone else heard of this theory?
lemongrass 05-11-2009, 15:06 By the way, some dogs would hate it I'm sure!
kitty katt 05-11-2009, 15:23 Hi, is your dog very frightened of the fireworks, I have never heard of putting bandages around them, but my dog , who is no longer with us she died at 15 years old, was terrified even if a car backfired she panicked, we had to turn television, radio everything up loud so she could not here them, she panicked and tiddled all over the house, it got that bad we had to get some sedatives from vet to calm her down., When she got older her hearing was going and she could not hear them as much. It was really upsetting to see her like that.
lemongrass 05-11-2009, 15:25 No, my dogs are ok. Just wondered if there was any foundation in the theory of 'wrapping' dogs. Could be some help to some pets if there is!
pinkgirl 05-11-2009, 15:44 Well Leah started shaking just after lunch time, she has an old t shirt
on her, not helped though- and she has had a calming tablet too:(
Glad the 2 pups are not nervous too
and so it begins :( I very much doubt I'd be able to get Angel to sit still long enough to be able to wrap her in anything - I reckon it would cause her more distress.
Sarah1985 05-11-2009, 16:57 Isnt it part of the whole TTouch theory? Never tried it myself. Its suppose to increase confidence. I do wonder if this sort of stuff works and to what extent
I worried about my rabbits .. they are usually tucked in the garage come bonfire night, but I've just got in and people have already started setting them off in their gardens .. I rushed out to put the rabbits in the garage and they're sat, quite happily ignoring the whooshes and BANGS that are surrounding them.
It does sound weird, but..... my ex-racer is terrified of everything (although, strangely, not fireworks) and when we go out for a walk seeing any of the things she is scared of will make her jump and pull and spin, desperate to get away from the dangerous child/ball/wheelie bin/twig blowing in the breeze that has frightened her. Anyway, when its cold and she has her winter coat on, she doesn't seem to react as panicky to scary things. I suppose the coat is a bit like being wrapped up, so maybe there is something in it? I've always found the slight calming effect it has on her a bit inexplicable
Now TT does work for both my dogs. It's a fantastic therapy, just a shame it doesn't have a lasting effect for when you've gone to bed and some silly doofuss decides after midnight is a good time to begin their display...
Yes - it does :) Not for all dogs though.
Takara used to wear a snug tshirt which had the same effect.
I don't understand it enough to know how it works completely, but it works on applied pressure on certain points. It comes from the TTouch Massage which involves moving the skin in small circles (1 and a half times) using your finger tips. This is also done on different points such as the lips, ears, back end, shoulders etc.
