I dont know if this information is any use to anyone but thought it was worth sharing.
When my mum became ill recently she became too ill for me to look after and had to go in a home. as my parents owned thier own home they were means tested to pay her bills, luckily they had other funds to pay the bills but if you dont the government can force the sale of your home to cover these costs.
After she died it brought me to my senses in needing to make a will, through this i learnt that you can have something called a property protection trust that can help protect your home. Or at least the majority of it. the lady who did my will was very nice, came to my house when it suited me, i didnt need to go anywhere or do anything but give the company a call.
If anyone wants information pm me and i will pass the companies details on.

This is a really good point. Hubby and I have a will, but it needs updating.

I worry about inheritance tax, and really ought to sort something out as the tax threshold now is so low (mainly because of the huge hike in house prices) many people will fall foul of it - when it used to be something that only the 'rich' need worry about.

When my mum went into a home the financial process was difficult to say the least as she was a home owner. My sister had the sense to get proper info from a financial advisor which was a really good idea as he was able to explain just what money the authorities could squeeze out of mum.
A will is always a good idea if you've got anything of worth as it may stop arguements within the family if they are left to divvy up your belongings, I know I've got one if only to make sure that my dad who left the family when i was very young never has a claim on my house or money [wishful thinking on the money side]
If your parents gift the house to you and then within seven years go into a home the authorities can still force you to sell the house to pay for the care in the home., As I said financial advisors are GOOD

I'm really surprised be this roughly 21, I always thought that if the partner is still living in the house, they can't touch it, also that if there is a disabled child who had always lived in the house, once again they can't touch it,thank you for bringing this to our attention.
