Inspired by Kristian's poll do you tell you friends about the forum? I've always felt odd duscussing forums as my friends tend to look at me in an odd way or accuse me of using dodgy chatrooms  .

I feel like an idiot talking about it sometimes.

You missed another option....

"I don't have any real friends" :suspect:

Yes they do. Like you say, why not?

They already all think I'm the weirdest person they know :hihi:

Besides there's nothing wrong with internet communities. People are scared by 'grooming' stories. Personally I wouldn't mind a bit of grooming, my hair is quite straggly today.

I tell my friends about the forum. I really don't see it as anything to be embarrassed about. That said, it was a bit embarrassing when I was on here 18 hours a day!

I've mentioned the forum to quite a few folk, two of whom have subsequently registered.

People of my age, my friends, don't usuually use computers so when I try to explain about the Forum they look at me with bewilderment.
When I look for my peers on line I find very few.
So it's difficult for me to share the Forum with friends.

Hiya Hazel!

Dear Hazel, your peers are not here!
This forum - they give it a steer!
But do not feel sad,
It isn't all bad,
'You've loads of NEW friends - so let's cheer!

I usually pause for a moment and then tell them anyway.

My wife has only just about got used to me meeting people online, after I've been doing it about ten years and she and I have both met several of my online friends IRL (in fact, we planned a holiday in Belgium around meeting two of them). I remember when I first installed Microsoft Netmeeting and got my microphone working, then called a random person just to check it out, she ran around the room behind me shouting "SAD! You're SAD! It's Saturday night and you're talking to a computer, SAD!"

Get lots of mixed reactions when i tell people about sf,usually along the lines "sad ******* get a life" but when curiosity gets the better of them and they actually log on they love it.

my girlfriend used to hate me being on here, but she joined another forum and is completely hooked on it,she spends hours and hours on it,so much that we argue about internet usage and have even considered drawing up a rota!! She has met a few of her online friends......... maybe i should start to worry..........nah i enjoy the peace!!!

I've told a few 'real' friends about the forum and they just usually seem curious about it. I did get my friend 'Shin Akuma' to register - he hasn't got quite as addicted as me I have to say (a staggering 1 post!).

As I do not believe in friends - especially 'real' friends - I took the question to be aimed at those people I enjoy a conversation with amongst other things.

I often tel them what is happening in here and any interesting topics, as well as the occassional ridiculous one - especially posted by me. A couple of these people have since joined the forum.

However - there is some concern on their part concerning moderation as they have come from a forum where there originally was no such thing and need to completely change their posting style.

But the answer is yes.

I usually get one of those 'you talk to strangers' looks, but when I can furnish them with info they didn't know, and answer their 'how do you know?' with 'Sheffield Forum blahblahblah...' they start to take it seriously.

Forced my brother here today :D all the way from Cambridge :hihi:

One friend says she must register, but seems concerned about it's addictiveness
:suspect: dunno what she means :suspect: :hihi:

and she tells me about other people she hears about who are regulars here (never knows their usernames though  )

All my friends know I use the forum, I've even got one or two people to join up.

Most of my friends work full-time and say they don't have time but for me the forum has become a big part of my life as I no longer work or get out and about as much as I used to. Having the chance to get to know and meet people at the forum meets is an added bonus. Hubby thought I was absolutely mad when I first went to meets, but he's quite happy now I've made some friends with people from the forum and have expanded my social circle.

I'm liking the sound of Mrs Sumption :hihi: - she sounds a lot like my sister when it comes to all things computery.

I don't bother hiding anything from people about using the forum myself - I'd only slip up & end up looking like I was up to exceedingly dodgy things online :o
