I'm thinking about hiring a place to have a party for my birthday in a few months, so I'm looking for suggestions.
It would probably be for around 40 people, I need it to be on a Friday or Saturday night and I want to be able to sort out my own music (probably just from a laptop). I don't mind whether guests can buy drinks or if we'd bring drinks ourselves, but if it's a pub it needs to have decent beer and not just lager & John Smiths!
I can't afford to pay much if anything, so I'm thinking the best idea would probably be one of the free function rooms that some pubs have. It'd be easier if it was on a tram route or walkable from town.
Can anyone recommend anywhere?

The best private party I've been to in a while was in the upstairs room of Vodka Revolution in town. I'm afraid I don't know how much it would cost for a smaller party (when I went it was a bigger do of 200ish people and it was free provided they made at least £2000 over the bar -no problem at all!) but it was nice and private and a comfortable setting.
