no u dont need a 64 bit processor, there are different versions of the OS the x64 (for 64bit processors only) and the x86 (for both 32 and 64 bit processors)

if u have a 32 bit processor in your laptop then just buy/acquire *cough* the x86 edition and you will be fine

yes you need the x86 version, i'd recommend a clean install, backup all your files first, then boot from disc and format the hard drive and install, also a good idea to get the drivers for the laptop before hand just incase windows 7 doesnt install them (it should, found them all on all the systems ive installd it on, but just in case ;) )

What laptop is it, spec etc? Most laptops with XP on them bought in the past few years actually have 64-bit CPUs.

Windows 7 x86/32 Bit version will install and run on whatever processor your laptop has (as someone else posted).

64 Bit version will only work if you have a 64 Bit processor in your laptop.

It's not really right to suggest that most laptops bought over the last few years will have 64 Bit processors/CPU's as they won't. An equal if not greater number of Dual Core processor based laptops were available and a lot of those are 32 Bit. Best thing to do is check the specs on your laptop manufacturers website and that will confirm what processor your laptop has.

Agreed.... DO NOT upgrade.

I upgraded, was slower than when I reformatted and did a fresh install

You do know how long 64-bit CPUs have been around don't you. Core2Duo has been 64-bit since day one. Turions have too.

So which 32 bit processors are you talking about?

x86 does not equal 32 bit.
