I got my first puppy on saturday, and yesterday discovered he has worms, so I've given him some worming syrup but was just wondering how long it will be until they're all out of his system or roughly how long? Just because there's still 3/4 in each toilet trip and they're about 3" long each and I feel really sorry for him =[

Tavie, what did you use? I've found some wormers are rubbish, especially the Bob Martins ones

it was Sherleys worming syrup which i used on him, and at least the worms seem to be coming out dead, is that a good sign?

I've never heard of that one, but yes at least they're coming out. If he's passing worms like that though I'd be giving more than one dose and waiting 3 months, I'd speak to your vet.

Mine get wormed regular and have I've never seen any, even dead ones...

I'd get some proper ones from the vet. Still, what you have given has obviously had some effect. Drontal, advocate, panacur are good names (there are more). There is some debate about suitability of advocate for collie related dogs.

Be aware that lungworm is supposed to be on the increase and some wormers don't stop that.

I've always used drontal with good effect, I'd also contact whoever you got the puppies off and inform them of the worms...

thanks for the responses =] peaches, would you recommend I give him another dose already? I only gave him a dose yesterday, but the lady I got him from told me he'd only been wormed twice even though he's 10 weeks old, and when I questioned them being wormed every 2 weeks to begin with she told me that they only needed 3 times in 12 weeks! I'm so confused by all of this!

Abcd1243- I'm taking him to the vets tomorrow anyway just to have a once over so will ask them if the one I've got or not and see what they recommend. Thanks for the help you guys <3

Aren't all puppies born with worms? Because they encyst in the mother. So worming a puppy is quite important.

I did, I called her yesterday because he had a really upset stomach [but i think that was just from the move because he seems ok again now] and she thanked me and said she'd re-worm the pups left, the poor little things =[

Yes I think so, not 100% (I'm not a breeder)

I was under the impression every 2 weeks from 4 weeks til 12, once a month until 6 months then every 3 then on.

Tavie - No I wouldn't give another one now, just wait and see what the vet has to say tomorrow. In the mean time keep a close eye on him/her, make sure they eat/drink as normal

will do, though i don't really know his 'normal' eating and drinking because he's had worms since i got him! but if it changes ill keep beady eyed!

all went fine at the vets with the little man, they re-wormed him so there were lots more this morning, they've told me to use drontal on him from next week but other than the worms he's a healthy boy, good weight and size =]
