I would like to buy an house and know that the current rip off prices means that I could not afford to buy in Sheffield. Can anyone recommend an area where I would get an house for under £50k

A very rough area or a motivated private sale.

There is a new(ish) development near the train station, it's further down the road from the old bus garage, with a big banner outside saying "apartments from £55K", might be worth a look.

Page Hall. I've lived there a year and found it ace. Easy parking, great location for town/M1/ Hospital etc. Good shops, near a couple of parks. Big hill behind with a roman fort on it. Check the newspaper. There were two last week, one for 35k the other too much at 65k.
Your only problem may be getting a mortgage as with the (now reinvented) masterplan the banks stopped lending as we all waited to find out what happened. But it now seems that we are gonna be getting complete refurbs. Watch this space!!
If you do go for it, then id be interested in knowing the bank's position as they will be slow to react i imagine.
Page Hall is one of the cheapest areas in the country, but since living here i cannot understand why!

Otherwise, check out Stoke, Grimsby, Leven above Edinburgh, the Cumbrian coast and pockets perhaps still in Preston, Mancs, Notts, Rovrum, Doncs.

Get lookin on Right Move.

You may want to check the web for some beautiful places in France also. Failing that, Eastern Europe.

You may also get a mortgage on a narrowboat through Royal Bank of Scotland.

Hope this helps

I bought and sold a house in Stocksbridge at Christmas and i'd like to know where i could have got something that didn't need knocking down and rebuilding at that price!

These are part ownership flats where you purchase half of the property and pay a reduced rent on the other half. I do believe they are building more of these flats on Shoreham Street and Kelham Island so they must be popular. Although, it's probably the cheapest way of getting on the property ladder in the city centre. Check out their site below.

Other than above I can't really suggest where to look for something on such a small budget. Good luck whatever you decide to do!!

Their web site says the Kelham Island ones are going to be about £47K for a 1 bedroom flat, which is not bad.

I visited someone in one of them the other day, they are actually very nice inside as well.
