What is the best Chippy in Sheffield . I am willing to travel and try.

I work allover sheffield so we get to check most of the chippies out.
my faves are greens i think its called near the old grindstone near walkley .tony's at mosborough were top class but have gone downhill a little but still good tho!other than that most family run chippys in sheffield are spot on.

The Broomhill Friary, The Ranmoor Friary and The Greedy Greek (30p chips which taste like quavers ftw)

I used to live at Richmond and went to Manor Top Fish Bar, which was gorgeous but a tad expensive. Now I'm at Woodseats and I'd say that Woodseats Fisheries (think it's called that - has a blue and yellow fascia, near to Blundells) is fab and much cheaper - so I can afford mushy peas as well as cod and chips, lol!

Salt and battered on London Road home of the greasy chip buttie and any of the three in Chapletown (two owned by the same cypriot family on Station road and burncross road and the little one just below the asda that only opens a few times a week

A number of people say Woodseats fisheries. I think they are right. It is run by the Son of Chip Shop Tony .Tony ran many Fish and Chip establishments in Sheffield. Tony's Fish and Chips were good but not as good as his Mum's.Tony's Mum used to run the Baraccuda on Duke Street (Legendery Fish and Chips)

The newly opened one on Dykes Hall Road that's run by the people from the Honey Pot has filled a big hole for a really good one in north Sheffield (though I've heard there's one over towards Malin Bridge way worth checking out too).

Teds in Manor park centre are the best, his fish is so white and juicy and his batter is crisp but soft

Most definitely Two Steps and sister chippy Green Steps - satifyingly large portions and ecologically sound - on and near Sharrowvale Road - hmmmmm, chips...

Sarah's Plaice on Shiregreen Lane is top notch, batter to die for.

Try Bretts at back of Centre Spot at Basegreen, he cooks the fish fresh when you walk in so nothing "old" in the heaters etc.

Abbey Friery at Millhouses used to be fantastic a few years ago but left the area about 10 years ago. The is also a good one in Bangor North Wales but it's a long way to go unless you are there on holday

It's open until 8pm. The owner's sister, liz, runs Brenda's on Earl Way, just off the Moor near Plug, which are also superb. My favoured lunchtime chippy!

I had some chips and cheese at the Rutland Arms last night, and I can say that they were the best chips I've had in a very long while! Needless to say, the Rutland also does very good fish dishes and burgers!

I much prefer Woodseats Fisheries to Poseidon. Woodseats are more akin to aproper Leeds chippy. Local rivalries aside, I think fish and chips are generally better in Leeds than in Sheffield.

Green Steps on Hickmott rd is really good - the pies and burgers are homemade, chips are nice - I don't eat meat myself but I've been told the fish is really nice too.

Trafalgar Rd is the best in my opinion affordable , tasty and filling.

I would give another vote for Sarah's Plaice near Concorde Sports Centre, it is gorgeous.

The Fish is lovely with big chunkly flakes of cod rather than the grey looking mush you get from some chippys.

There are lots of these kinda posts already. I prefer Poseidon rather than the one in woodseats it seems cleaner (think cos its newer) and bigger meals. Better taste!

I can remember when I could buy chips for 3d and fish for 4d all for less than 5p new pence, fish was about 10" long and you could never eat all the chips in the bag.

I love my fish and chips and have tried the majority if not all on the south side of sheff and in town.... (although I do have an occasional hot vindaloo too because a varied diet is good for you ;) )

...and in my opinion the winner of the 'best in south sheff' award goes to

Woodseats Fisheries - great value, great tasting and consistent.

Town wise - it's Brendas - as above for rationale.

i think taplin chippy is 1 of the best it is defently worth a try as it has recently been took over by an english family and the quality of the food is so much better also it is such a bargain trust me its worth a try

atlantis used to be the best in sheffield years ago, they were the best tasting batter chippy so much so tht people used to go in and buy bags of scraps for 5p (going back 25yrs like lol) but when i went in recently since i dont live there any more they were awful and fake grrrrr

Not enough chippies in Sheff anymore. I haven't had the urge to eat fish n chips for ages but last night I ended up on a right treck to find one that wasn't french fries and pizzas.

MMmm yum .. yes, the Woodseats one is lovely .. we called in there on our way home over Christmas. The Fish was succulent and the batter crisp - and the chips absolutely scrummy.

Yayyyyyy......we have just moved around the corner from Codraphenia and tried it for the first time tonight - it was fab. The chips were perfect. Rivelin6 liked it because it does veggie stuff as well and I got two plaice for the price of one because the first one broke.

It's got to be Green Steps in Sharrowvale, absolutely without contest. The chips are crispy without being over-fried, the fish is sustainably sourced for anyone who wants it, and the veggie options are brilliant. What's more, it's pretty cheap. New Cod on the Block on Commonside is pretty good too - the owners used to have Broomhill Friery a few years ago.

Ranmoor Friery have the best chips i've tasted in Sheffield.

I was visiting my sister on Monday, and called down to the shops at Newfield Green. We had fish and chips from the chip shop in the row of shops. Quite surprisingly they were really really good, would definitely recommend them. Long time since I had nice fish and chips.

Has to be Four Lanes on Leppings Lane (opp the Wednesday Ground).

We have our weekly fish and chips, and have yet to be let down. Top class fish, lovely chips, a real treat for us once a week. Another excellent chippy is Quadraphenia (is that spelt right) at Walkley, again very good.

Harry Ramsdens in Medowhall, mayby not. Brendas is nice.

With Chippys if you go to one that caters for late night drinkers, then the chips are likely to not be as good. People who have had a good drink session are not overly bothered about the quality of food at 1am in the morning.

Go for one with short opening hours (lunch time and tea time), go for one and that should be a good indicator to the quality

Depends on the mood of the owners. Sometimes I get 6 chips and sometimes only 4. They're very tight with their offerings even though the fishcake was quite original in taste, sorry but they need to think less profits and more customer service and sizeable servings.

However being as though it's Grenoside the locals put up with it rather than look elsewhere....and before you ask....I live in Grenoside.

I'm an ex pat living in Canada about to visit Sheff. Staying in Psalter Lane/ Hunter's Bar area. Is there a decent f & c shop anywhere near there or even downtown? I won't be in a position to be able to travel to far flung corners of the city. Last visit I went to a chippy at Hunter's Bar and they were no good, just like they are here, greasy as hell. I like the batter nice and crispy and the chips not soggy. Help me out folks. I'm dying for some decent fish and chips. :help:

I'm thinking outside the box on this one, but has anyone tried thompsons on the A64 just outside York. That is a fantastic chippy (I know it's not in Sheffield) and has been voted the best this year in the Country. It's a sit down restaurant and the fish is to die for...

For £9.95 you get a 10 oz Cod, chips, mushy peas, bread & butter and either tea or coffee. That place beats anything Sheffield has to offer.

Thks, I'll try them. Don't remember what chippy I tried last yr. On Sharrow Vale Rd near H. bar as I remember. Not good. As to the person who suggested that Sheffielders like soggy chips, I can't speak for current tastes but when I used to live there many yrs ago that never used to be the case. Soggy often means greasy, which is never good in my book. Chips should be cooked not raw but they shouldn't be coated in a pool of grease.

Working my way down toward Sheff for those fish & chips. But if anyone is ever in Aberdeen, try Ashvale's. Had them last night. Just as they're supposed to be. Thin, crispy batter, fresh fish, chunky chips, well drained, fully cooked, not greasy. Delicious. Bit far to go though. :D

i asked my mate who was at my home would you go to chip shop.as his car was out side my home.so off he whent to todays catch wadsley bridge.he said the guy that works their was dealing in drugs at one end of the counter while the young girl was serving fish and chips at the other end....i told him to report it..

The drugs will probably taste better than the food on offer. That is a right dive and only gets idiots from the pub across the road and away supporters at Wednesday matches. Not recommended.

Try Broomheads at Crookes near The Grindstone pub. Good quality fish, traditionally fried in beef dripping!

Uses Admirals in crooks for years, have always been good or very good. Lately moved from the area so decided to check chippies closer by and having a look at this threads suggestions tried a few. Posidon in Woodseats were very good. However some of the suggestions like two steps in sharrow have to have been made by the owner! Load of rubbish or what. How they can survive in business is beyond me.

Big thumbs up for Bretts on Basegreen shops! And another for Tony's at Mosbro'.

Phoenix Fish Bar at Woodseats is pretty good. Order a fish from Kaz and he will usually chuck in a small scoop of chips free. Cost £2.50

Are there any "Real" chippy's left at all ? I remember one down by the Midland Station, Howard street I think, who had coal fired chip pans, complete with a pile of coal and a shovel in the corner.

Without a doubt and the winner hands down by a mile. Poseidon on Abbey Lane. Freshly cooked chips every time (no brown lunchtimers) Cod and Haddock as big as your forearm (including a low batter weight-watchers special BTW) Fantastic, friendly service and I drive past all the others on Woodseats to get to it! (All others pale into insignificance and offer those tiddley disappointing credit-crunch sized fish with batter like wet cardboard)

...Not that I'm biased guys ! ;)

used to live there for 20 years and if its still there the one on high street opposite the blue stoops pub was always ok and i think i did proper sheffield fish cakes ie not risoles (mashed up in breadcrumbs etc)

the one on the main a61 road opposite the train station was bad and pricey

i have tried a chippy across from co-op at ecclesfield i hated it, the best ones are one near the round-about on southeey green and stanwood frier at stannington and riverside chip shop on malin bridge opposite witherspoons

Definately not the one in Hillsborough that put their advertising flyer under my windscreenwiper when I was parked at Tesco on Abbeydale Road! You'd have to be keen on travel to do an 11 mile round trip for fish and nirks.

I can't really say since I haven't actually been to every chippy in town and tried them, but the chippy near me (Stanwood chippy) is gorgeous stuff.

Admiral Crookes.. Mini Haddock, Chips, Peas/Curry/Gravy/Beans, and choice of Fish Rissole or Small Sausage all for £2.10.. can't beat it really

Have to say, we went in this lunchtime. Had mini fish and chips, peas, and fish rissole, £2.10 or £2.20 and PROPER scallops too for only 20p. :love: Oh, and the breadcake was delicious! (Yes, I am greedy so and so, I know! :hihi: )

There was plenty, the fish was lovely, - don't know how they do this for the money. I know a few places where that would be classed as a full portion. The fish was cooked fresh, and you can tell they take pride in what they do, very friendly people. What's more, I was pleased to note that they have the top award - five stars for hygiene from the council on display. If you're passing, these guys really deserve your business. We'll be going back. Thank you, Admiral. And thanks for the extra trays and forks for the kids, who were sharing, which you wouldn't take any extra for. :love:

Got haddock and chips from Brenda's on Wednesday, with scraps. HUGE fish, thin, crispy batter, lovely fat chips, not a hint of greasiness. Bloody lovely. £3.75.
