View Full Version : Best Chippy in Sheffield jacobt01 01-11-2009, 20:34 What is the best Chippy in Sheffield . I am willing to travel and try. m.metals 01-11-2009, 20:50 i reckon tonys at mosborough if that helps halfwaythere 01-11-2009, 20:58 I work allover sheffield so we get to check most of the chippies out. my faves are greens i think its called near the old grindstone near walkley .tony's at mosborough were top class but have gone downhill a little but still good tho!other than that most family run chippys in sheffield are spot on. P3nn 01-11-2009, 21:00 The Broomhill Friary, The Ranmoor Friary and The Greedy Greek (30p chips which taste like quavers ftw) ganges 01-11-2009, 21:03 marishelles ecclesfield Aqua 01-11-2009, 21:07 I used to live at Richmond and went to Manor Top Fish Bar, which was gorgeous but a tad expensive. Now I'm at Woodseats and I'd say that Woodseats Fisheries (think it's called that - has a blue and yellow fascia, near to Blundells) is fab and much cheaper - so I can afford mushy peas as well as cod and chips, lol! halfwaythere 01-11-2009, 21:08 marishelles mmmm nice choice, makin mi hungry.... Chap BLADE 01-11-2009, 21:08 Salt and battered on London Road home of the greasy chip buttie and any of the three in Chapletown (two owned by the same cypriot family on Station road and burncross road and the little one just below the asda that only opens a few times a week marashells at ecclesfiled is good but expensive Chap BLADE 01-11-2009, 21:10 Just out of interesttheres one at hunters bar that does stuff like gluton free batter that has opened up a whole new world ato a mates wife who is intollerent to gluton They also do different fish using ones that are not under threat PHIL76 01-11-2009, 21:11 The one on southey is ok near where the magnet pub used to be,marishells i think has been poor for many years now since it kept changing owners then going back again etc Becky86 01-11-2009, 21:14 Woodseats fisheries chesterfield rd woodseats, don't think it's open at night though, or abbey frier @ millhouses nest to the Robin hood crazy_chick 01-11-2009, 21:16 Thorpe Hesley fish shop is the best Raegan Smith 01-11-2009, 21:22 There's one just outside of Ecclesfield village, Mobri I think, amazing F&C!! :) halfwaythere 01-11-2009, 21:30 woodseats mmmm the one with the yellow fish sign.quality but always a queue Mr Pops 01-11-2009, 21:44 Seen this thread before  But for what its worth TWO STEPS on Sharrow Vale Rd jacobt01 01-11-2009, 21:55 A number of people say Woodseats fisheries. I think they are right. It is run by the Son of Chip Shop Tony .Tony ran many Fish and Chip establishments in Sheffield. Tony's Fish and Chips were good but not as good as his Mum's.Tony's Mum used to run the Baraccuda on Duke Street (Legendery Fish and Chips) Dan_Ashcroft 01-11-2009, 22:04 The newly opened one on Dykes Hall Road that's run by the people from the Honey Pot has filled a big hole for a really good one in north Sheffield (though I've heard there's one over towards Malin Bridge way worth checking out too). L.U.C.A.S 01-11-2009, 22:16 mannings chippy at woodhouse AndyK 01-11-2009, 22:40 Without a doubt and the winner hands down by a mile. Poseidon on Abbey Lane. I am willing to travel and try. Teds in Manor park centre are the best, his fish is so white and juicy and his batter is crisp but soft lunchbag 02-11-2009, 10:51 Most definitely Two Steps and sister chippy Green Steps - satifyingly large portions and ecologically sound - on and near Sharrowvale Road - hmmmmm, chips... DeBilde23 02-11-2009, 11:14 Sarah's Plaice on Shiregreen Lane is top notch, batter to die for. jaklucy 02-11-2009, 11:35 Try Bretts at back of Centre Spot at Basegreen, he cooks the fish fresh when you walk in so nothing "old" in the heaters etc. Leper 02-11-2009, 11:50 Abbey Friery at Millhouses used to be fantastic a few years ago but left the area about 10 years ago. The is also a good one in Bangor North Wales but it's a long way to go unless you are there on holday Chap BLADE 02-11-2009, 12:22 There's one just outside of Ecclesfield village, Mobri I think, amazing F&C!! :) Mobri is the bakers not a chippie are you thinking of Marishells in the dip opposite the old Post Office Mr Pops 02-11-2009, 12:28 Worst Chippy is Becketts (Manor Top) chips are like eating gravel :gag::gag: laura_7113 02-11-2009, 14:23 Codraphenia in walkley is really nice!!! Yog Sothoth 02-11-2009, 14:51 Woodseats fisheries chesterfield rd woodseats, don't think it's open at night though, or abbey frier @ millhouses nest to the Robin hood It's open until 8pm. The owner's sister, liz, runs Brenda's on Earl Way, just off the Moor near Plug, which are also superb. My favoured lunchtime chippy! Yog Sothoth 02-11-2009, 14:52 Without a doubt and the winner hands down by a mile. Poseidon on Abbey Lane. (All others pale into insignificance and offer those tiddley disappointing credit-crunch sized fish with batter like wet cardboard) ...Not that I'm biased guys ! ;) No, any chippy which doubles as a kebab joint will never equal a 'proper' chippy. Woodseats Fisheries is better than Poseidon hands-down. I second that just sent oh off for fish and chips from sarahs plaice ,my mouth is watering thinking about them. escort1 02-11-2009, 17:30 Worst Chippy is Becketts (Manor Top) chips are like eating gravel :gag::gag: Last time i had fish from there it tasted and looked about 3 years old. kerry100 02-11-2009, 18:10 Im new to the area but already tried a few chip shops in woodseats, i like the one on abbey lane- big portions! christy11 02-11-2009, 18:25 i to like i Poseidon fish bar- its clean and good slection. They have started doing a lunch time menu now. I also keep meaning to try the sit down restaurant in town- anyone been there? Cooperman! 02-11-2009, 18:32 BEHAVE THE LOT OF YOU. Four Lanes Chippy on leppings lane is the finest chippy by far. AndyK 02-11-2009, 18:59 Woodseats Fisheries used to be called Ferguson's and was ace at one time but sadly third division now! ....Poseidon Abbey Lane is Premier league ......and is it Mushy Peas or Sloppy peas ?? exmrbd 03-11-2009, 06:53 Without a doubt and the winner hands down by a mile. Tyranna 04-11-2009, 13:11 I had some chips and cheese at the Rutland Arms last night, and I can say that they were the best chips I've had in a very long while! Needless to say, the Rutland also does very good fish dishes and burgers! laughalot01 04-11-2009, 13:14 Norwood fisheries on Herries Road is lovely, fave is Chip 'n' scales on Sheffield Lane Top. norwood fisheries iss nasty worst iv ever been to my fav is four lanes on leppings lane really nice an brill staff Leg-end 04-11-2009, 13:44 Jeff's on Herries Road used to be unbeatable, but not the same nowadays! Yog Sothoth 05-11-2009, 14:25 Another vote for this great chippy :D I much prefer Woodseats Fisheries to Poseidon. Woodseats are more akin to aproper Leeds chippy. Local rivalries aside, I think fish and chips are generally better in Leeds than in Sheffield. Kamble 05-11-2009, 14:36 Green Steps on Hickmott rd is really good - the pies and burgers are homemade, chips are nice - I don't eat meat myself but I've been told the fish is really nice too. DrOllie 05-11-2009, 14:45 cook you're own - its better for you 8balltiger 05-11-2009, 15:06 Trafalgar Rd is the best in my opinion affordable , tasty and filling. Greeny01 05-11-2009, 15:59 I would give another vote for Sarah's Plaice near Concorde Sports Centre, it is gorgeous. The Fish is lovely with big chunkly flakes of cod rather than the grey looking mush you get from some chippys. jsg103 05-11-2009, 17:41 There are lots of these kinda posts already. I prefer Poseidon rather than the one in woodseats it seems cleaner (think cos its newer) and bigger meals. Better taste! Vrsaljko 05-11-2009, 20:23 I prefer Poseidon rather than the one in woodseats it seems cleaner Apart from the dog sh*te bin outside the door! jsg103 05-11-2009, 21:45 its not outside the shop its by the vets! Vrsaljko 06-11-2009, 12:57 its not outside the shop its by the vets! They must have moved it then, because it used to be. Leper 06-11-2009, 16:58 I can remember when I could buy chips for 3d and fish for 4d all for less than 5p new pence, fish was about 10" long and you could never eat all the chips in the bag. frenchfrie 06-11-2009, 17:24 I love my fish and chips and have tried the majority if not all on the south side of sheff and in town.... (although I do have an occasional hot vindaloo too because a varied diet is good for you ;) ) ...and in my opinion the winner of the 'best in south sheff' award goes to Woodseats Fisheries - great value, great tasting and consistent. Town wise - it's Brendas - as above for rationale. I thank you. marketman 09-11-2009, 18:55 nah, best has to be mine!!! :D jimbo77 09-11-2009, 19:46 the worst is atlantis accross from where sicey pub used to be. they couldnt even understand me the other day and the chips were undercooked and she had to ask me three times for which drink!!!!! surely chip shops that are owned by brits are better? what does anybody else think? ever had chips from a chinese or a haddock even? jimbo77 09-11-2009, 19:54 mobri is a sandwich shop/bakers. Saffy 08-01-2010, 10:38 MMmm yum .. yes, the Woodseats one is lovely .. we called in there on our way home over Christmas. The Fish was succulent and the batter crisp - and the chips absolutely scrummy. taxman 26-01-2010, 22:49 Codraphenia in walkley is really nice!!! Yayyyyyy......we have just moved around the corner from Codraphenia and tried it for the first time tonight - it was fab. The chips were perfect. Rivelin6 liked it because it does veggie stuff as well and I got two plaice for the price of one because the first one broke. Will definitely be frequent customers! :D thegreenman 26-01-2010, 23:32 It's got to be Green Steps in Sharrowvale, absolutely without contest. The chips are crispy without being over-fried, the fish is sustainably sourced for anyone who wants it, and the veggie options are brilliant. What's more, it's pretty cheap. New Cod on the Block on Commonside is pretty good too - the owners used to have Broomhill Friery a few years ago. However being as though it's Grenoside the locals put up with it rather than look elsewhere....and before you ask....I live in Grenoside. desertdragon 18-07-2010, 18:59 theres only 1 chippy in sheffield worth talkin about, MANOR TOP CHIPPY cant beat it lwaller 19-07-2010, 15:15 Tony's Mosborough great chippy!! Last visit I went to a chippy at Hunter's Bar and they were no good, just like they are here, greasy as hell. I like the batter nice and crispy and the chips not soggy. Help me out folks. That is a fantastic chippy (I know it's not in Sheffield) and has been voted the best this year in the Country. It's a sit down restaurant and the fish is to die for... For £9.95 you get a 10 oz Cod, chips, mushy peas, bread & butter and either tea or coffee. That place beats anything Sheffield has to offer. As to the person who suggested that Sheffielders like soggy chips, I can't speak for current tastes but when I used to live there many yrs ago that never used to be the case. The fish was cooked fresh, and you can tell they take pride in what they do, very friendly people. What's more, I was pleased to note that they have the top award - five stars for hygiene from the council on display. If you're passing, these guys really deserve your business. We'll be going back.
