View Full Version : Do you kill bugs? (If so how)?
SkiesofArcad 02-08-2005, 08:46 a) hitting them with an object
b) just a simple step
c) stomp and twist/drag
d) using chemicals
e) getting someone else to do it
f) I don't kill bugs, bugs are cool!
g) with your hands
h) other
Nope. Don't like killing bugs. Why kill something when you can catch it and put it outside?
Also don't approve of people who seem to ENJOY killing bugs. When I was a kid there were two boys living next door who used to collect snails from our neighbourhood in a bucket, and then squash them all.
I think parents should try to teach their children to have respect for all living things.
Having said all that, I do have a severe fear of spiders. But even so, I'd much rather get someone to catch them and put them outside than kill them.
I try to move creepy crawlies to somewhere more appropriate, eg. outside or into next doors garden, but if they insist on comming back (only realy slugs and snails) and eating my herbs/tomatoes/grape vine/garlic then they get squashed.
Berberis 02-08-2005, 08:59 The only bug I will kill is a wasp but only if its getting on my tits!
I spent 20 mins chasing a moth out of the shower the other week because it might drown!
I even once scooped a bee out of a puddle once!
Am I pathetic?

Nick2, why don't you try putting catfood down for hedgehogs and installing a bird feeder? Then your newfound friends should keep the slugs at bay for you!

Usually the frogs in the pond keep the slugs at bay but this year it has been so damp there are millions of the buggers. I have never seen birds eating slugs, I've watched them eating the snails though. I wouldn't put catfood out, I think it might attract rats.

so is that the a), b) or c) method?
I have just recovered from the aftermath of a moth invasion which caused more damage than you can begin to imagine. It was only resolved after I called on the council's services and didnt they just drag their feet in providing it. I have a phobia about slugs and the Slug Rescue Team, in the form of my gallant neighbour at any time of day or night, who disposes of them somewhat more sympathetically.
franc1987 02-08-2005, 10:06 i squash the little sh*ts if they are annoying me. If not i jut ignore them
DragonofAna 02-08-2005, 15:49 It may be against my beliefs to harm another living creature but sometimes you just cannot help but crush the invading ant or accidentally spill salt on that slimy slug.
Spiders I will not kill. If they are in my home and at risk I will pick them up and carefully place them somewhere safe.

BoroughGal 02-08-2005, 18:17 Now I'm not condoning cruelty of any kind.... but my brother used to pull the legs off those flying daddy-long legs things, so they couldn't land properly... and he used to burn ants with a magnifying glass.
These were the only two things he told me about. There may have been more.
I only kill bugs if the invade the home...and if they do...
then i turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger and splat them...
other than that i leave them to live their little bug lifes in peace..
:)
I kill them because I hate them  . If you simply catch them and put them outside, what's to stop them crawling back in?
I only swat flys... but thats because they tramp around in poo all day... :gag: spiders and other assorted creatures get the glass and paper treatment and are usually shown the door
beansforyou 02-08-2005, 21:57 Funny I should come across this thread, as my dog has just pounced on the fattest moth ever, they come in through the window at night and flutter around the living room....he then spends ages trying to catch them, and plays with them for a bit.
I try and intervene and put them back outside.
DragonofAna 02-08-2005, 22:05 When I was younger I pulled all the legs off one side of a daddy long leg and watched it running round and round in circles. But that was before I realised the cruelty of such actions.
Having said that I have been stung by wasps and bees and I am sure they do not have a guilty conscience about attempting to kill me.

Haha im glad it not just my dog that does this thought she was going mad.Its fun to watch a fully grown rottweiler trying to catch fly's or moths untill the bug goes to the window and get big lump of dog pounce onto you.I only kill flys with spray as do not like them in the house, other bugs such as spider and other crawlers just get them on a paper and throw them out of the window.
EDIT- Forgot one bug i do love to squash is them millions of teeny tiny red blood spiders you find on the walls.Dont know why but always make me want to squash them make red dots all over wall.:P

I can understand why you'd wish to avoid getting stung there serapis! :hihi:
I swat flies & wasps, squash snails and drop slugs down the roadside grates to drown.
Any bugs, bees, moths, butterflies or spiders in the house get trapped in a glass and are gently removed to the garden.
scaramanga 06-08-2005, 11:00 I dont usually kill bugs but ive killed a few crickets :) they are food for my tarantulas, mantis and now my new gecko :D
No I don't generally kill bugs but I'm not too fond of wasps. If they are indoors and I can't get them outside , I do try to swat them. My son is allergic to wasp stings.
I get a few small aunt's in my kitchen around this time of the year, always step on them but always use someones elses shoe when i do.
I've found a new way of getting rid of bugs, which is natural and humane, I chuck them in the pond and the goldfish eat them.
NatalieSheff 06-08-2005, 19:18 kill all spiders (or get him to), moths get chucked out side (by him) flies im ok with, mozzies get squished and i bravely flicked a grasshopper out of my living room the other day! lady bugs freak me out slightly are the black ones poisonous?;)
DragonofAna 06-08-2005, 19:58 All insects serve a purpose. I used to detest wasps, having been stung for no reason, until I found out they are not particularly friendly towards slugs or such. I hate slugs - but without them there would be more crap around. Spiders get rid of 'pests' such as flies, but even flies get rid of our rubbish.
Tis the circle of life. A good job we are not wiping out such critters.
If you can - just kick them out of hte house. Otherwise - be as humane as possible. Those spiders may have babies ;)

I genrally use the glass and junk mail method to get rid of spiders. However we had ants in our living room a few weeks ago and they had to be nipponed. :gag: There was too many of them!
