A recent survey (see BBC Business news) said London was the most cost-effective city to study and work in, as higher wages outweighed the living costs, with Liverpool and Birmingham next. Sheffield was 5th. It said UK students will spend £9bn over the next year, with £3.5bn on rent.

Doesn't quantify how much on beer & kebabs though!

This must assume that students are earning from a part time job as well as getting a loan, etc.?

Otherwise I cannot believe the statistics - surely property prices and rents, even today, are higher in London?

I know several people who live in London and they do get much higher wages than me (for the same job) but the cost of living leaves takes every penny they earn, they don't have the same diposable income I have.
