Our desktop PC on Windows XP is wired to the router via cable and it won't connect to the internet...says local connection only ??
My wireless laptop on Vista is connecting perfectly well to the router for internet as is the XBox live so it's not our network provider or the router it's got to be something with the PC ??!!
It's not conflicting IP addresses...I've tried re-installing the ISP software that came with the router...I've tried manually setting IP addresses etc
Still showing local ...was working perfectly ok last night !!
Have tried everything I can think of ....anymore suggestions please ??
try uninstalling any software that you have for the router, you should get an internet connect straight off when you plug the ethernet into the pc from the router without any software at all, it may well be the software thats causing it

in the network properties for the local only network theres a single option to click titled something like share internet connection, i was having the same trouble a while back and clicked that and it connected straight away, however since ive mended my puter (new hdd) its refound the network but i cant for the life of me find that same option.......so our networks also local only
edit:- think ive found it
in internet options (either go via internet explorer or via network and sharing)
then connections / settings / properties / sharing / tick allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection
Thanks for your suggestions...I will try again after tea !!

i'd try mine first as its the easiest and least dangerous one, if mine doesnt work then go for uninstalling stuff

I think yours is for if you have a broadband modem connected to one machine and you want others on the same network to use that PC as a gate way...
Neither worked ...I was still puzzled switched everything off at the mains in a huff !!
But then once switched power back on following day it seems to be working ok again
Guess I never will find out what it was now :loopy:
Thanks for your responses though guys !

Before messing with any settings a reboot is usually a good option.

Is that not a problem in itself, that the cause is not then found, or cured?
Would not finding the cause and resolving it be a better solution?
There are times I wonder at the acceptance of a product that is unreliable. MS Windows has global acceptance, yet it does have problems, requiring reboots, weekly patching that requires reboots and other issues which are just seen as the norm.
I wonder if such acceptance would be given to any new operating system, if it also was as unreliable.

PS
This isn't a kick at MS Windows, just musings. Would we buy a car that failed as often? I would not, yet businesses rely upon such software.

Sadly, some of them do!!!
