Okay,

First of all I apologise to anyone who may somehow find this thread offensive :loopy:

Secondly, I am trying to find a good source of information on dog shows (any type) in and around South Yorkshire.

At first, I just want to go and watch with Takara and see what it's all about and then obviously it's a good way of socialising her.

However, I can't find anything that will tell me when the shows are on! Apparently, you could go to a show every weekend they are so regular but I can't find one anywhere!

Apparently one of the dogs magazines, it might be dogs monthly or something give details but tesco don't stock it, neither do WHSmith and I haven't been able to get to town/Meadowhall to ask WHSmith to order it in.

If anyone has any ideas, or can give me details of shows themself, please, please do!

Thanks!

Lottie

Hi Lotti! You may have already found these links but I'll post them just incase:

UK Dog shows (http://www.dogshows.co.uk/)

Pro Dogs - general open shows (http://www.prodogs.co.uk/open%20shows/general_open_shows_2005.htm)

Newark Showground Events Listing (http://www.newarkshowground.com/Events%5B2004_1%5D.html)

Directory of Dog Clubs (http://www.bestofbreeds.com/clubcorner/dogs/gencanineatoc.htm)

I suspect that you'll probably do better with some advice from someone who knows about showing dogs I hope some of these are of some use :)

hi lotti, sorry i dont know of any shows, but could help in other areas so dont be afraid to ask.
what i did find usefull when keo was a pup was to take him to my local, (rockingham arms) at wentworth, where they are very dog friendly.
they even do dog meals for a pound. which is all the off cuts covered in gravey. by doing this got him relaxed around people and young children and very confident near roads.
keo is still going through training and will be for quite a while yet as it gets him working with other dogs and keeps him quite active.
you may want to start with a few basics when puppy comes home, and dont worry about him been young as he will soon twig on that been good gets treats.
if you want any advice just ask, as the early stages can be hard going. ie; chewing , wind, biteing, wind, pee pee puddles, wind, ripping washing off line and shredding in to little bits, WIND. and dont be sucked in by that "it wasnt me" look .
good luck and enjoy every minute of it.
xx

Am so excited for you... can't wait for you to post pictures of the pup!

Some community centres and dog trainers run puppy socialising classes, which are basically a chance for pups to get used to other dogs and people, while the owners swop ideas/'he-chewed-my-skirtingboards' horror stories!

Can't think of any off-hand, but I reackon if you dig out some numbers for dog trainers or vets from the yellow pages they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

You won't be able to do much with the pup before she's vaccinated anyway, so the first thing to do is find yourself a reputable vet, and then when pup goes for her first check-up you can ask loads of questions, and find out about local dog groups in your area.

I also loved the idea of looking into PAT dog training that you mentioned on another post. It would be a fantastic way to put something back into the hospital and cheer up lots of people.

Keep us informed won't you - am loving the whole Lottie/puppy love story!!!

Ooooooh Lottie.... have just had another thought. If you've got a free day this week, then get yourself down to Bakewell Show.

It's a dog lover's paradise, with loads of individual breed classes, dog agility, working dog displays and trade stands.

You'll love it! :D

Hi Lottie,

Why would anyone find this offensive, isn't this sort of advice what the forum is for.

Lottie has been getting a bit of stick about her dog posts on some other threads.

But I think the majority of us really enjoy them - gives us animal lovers a chance to wax lyrical!!!! ;)

Thanks all!

Lots of info,

Yes, I will be taking her to puppy socialisation as soon as she's had her vaccinations. And before that she'll still go out but I'll carry her and only take her around vaccinated dogs.

Valentine, JBee is right, it wasn't really that I was worried about upsetting anyone! It was just that some people can be so petty!

All those dates are going straight in my diary and will take a look and see if I haven't see any of those links yet!

Lots of dates - lots of fun!

Is the bakewell show on all week? Can't do today or tomorrow but might be able to do Thursday/Friday...

Is anyone else going? We could go together... Strix? I know you do ringcraft... might be interested?

Anyway, thanks a lot! You are fab people!

Bakewell Show in definitely on Thursday, because my mum's going. I think they have a speical 'dog day' though, so might be best to check the website or give them a call.

Also, be cautious with her around other dogs before she's vacciniated, because dogs can carry and transmit things to other dogs even if they themselves are immune.

And finally Lottie, I've asked you a squillian times now, ARE YOU GETTING A DALAMTION?????

Sorry, replied on the other thread yep! A gorgeous little bundle of spots!

I will be very careful - I think I will mainly be socialising with people until she has had her vaccinations and she'll be quite happy playing in the house most of the time!

Don't worry - I know how fragile they are at that age and this little spotty puppy will be so, so spoilt! And cared for!

Did somebody mention a dog show? :D

Sorry Lotti, having problems with the forum, so haven't read all of your thread. Are you taking a dog? Usually you can't unless they are actually showing, or are entered 'not for show' along with kennelmates who are showing :(

Is Bakewell far? I'd have to leave Brude at home, so couldn't be out all day

Bakewell is about 20 miles from Sheffield on the A619,the main problem is the sheer volume of traffic.

Errr, no mention of a dog show (http://www.bakewellshow.org/pageview2.asp?nav=<id=2>Show%20Information&cust=443) :suspect:

But you can take dogs in

Now I've read more of this thread....

http://www.ourdogs.co.uk is a better place to look for shows
you'll need to click 'show calendar' and the 'general shows' will be cheaper to get in, but the bigger (probably better) breeders will only be at the champ shows ;)

Hmmmm. Not a very well put together website is it?:suspect: There's no list for any of the classes (dogs/horses/cattle/sheep) as far as I can see. I supposed it will be in the programme, but that doesn't seem to be available on line.

Odd. And a little unhelpful.

Just found this description on an events website, which seems to be more informative than the Bakewell Show website itself...

"Ask people what they know about Bakewell and they’ll probably mention pudding and Bakewell Show… but while the pudding lasts but a few minutes, the happy memories of Bakewell Show lasts all year round.

One reason is that Bakewell Show - known fondly as The Little Royal - has something for everyone.

Bakewell Show is a two day agricultural show with cattle, sheep, goats, horses dogs, and show jumping. There are over 300 trade stands, Centre Ring attractions, horticultural marquee, floral art and food hall.

In 2004 the show attracted around 60,000 people from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Uganda, as well as many visitors closer to home, who all enjoyed an action packed programme of entertainment.

There were more than 6,000 entries in 700 competitive classes and a record number of animals on the showground. Trade stand numbers were boosted to 304 from 250 last year.

Preparations are already in hand for 2005 which marks the 175th show. We look forward to welcoming you then. "

Both of the above are fun dog shows and you can take dogs even if they are not showing.

Greyhound Gap will be attendance at both the events selling collars (for all dogs not just greyhounds), leads, harnesses etc. They are all made by a lady called Anna who donates all her time to make them so all the profits go to the rescue. The collars and leads are great and they are a very good price (they were £6.00 last year not sure if the price as gone up though). Both of mine have collars, leads and coats from them.

Both of my dogs are from Greyhound Gap and I try to support them as much as possible. They desperatly need funds as one of the dogs (Mac) in their care recently broke it's leg and was operated on, the bones are now held together with a metal plate and 19 screws! It cost over £1200 and they need further funds to help with his after care.

More info on Mac and Greyhound Gap's work can be found at www.greyhoundgap.com

Thanks for that info Thompson Girl about being able to take dogs in to the fun shows and about the collars. Do they have lightweight puppy collars there?

Strix I don't have my puppy yet but have only just found out earlier today that you can't take a dog unless you're showing it! Well that's pants!

I thought you could go watch with a dog and then your dog can socialise with others outside the ring!

I know there's probably a very good reason - we should go together though as I will be attending more to see what it's all about (I'll be showing Takara)

JBee, I love them too! My dream of having a dalmatian has finally come true after 14 years and I finally went to see her today! Look on my puppy page to find pictures that I'm about to post!

Thanks again, Strix, pm me if you fancy getting together to go to a show together

I'll let you know about the ringcraft classes, and can introduce you to a couple of 'Dally' people Lotti

Would be great to go to a show - mind you, I'm still an amateur ;)

It's ok Strix! Takara might just be able to go to the one on 4th September (I'm not sure if she'll have had her vaccinations...)

If I do take her, she'll only be watching obviously! I'm still hoping to go to the one on 13th August because I want to see what happens! I'll be alone though :(

It'd be fun to see you in show if you decide to enter...

We'll have to have a natter and see what we want to do!

Have to go now - it's 1:42am and I fancy a bowl of noodles!

Lets get you guys to a class

You can't take her to watch at a dog show, unless your breeder shows and enters her as not for show (but that's robably against therules  )

There's a minimumage for showing too (and I can't remember what it is. Ask Kirky. He'll know

yeah, but:

Both of the above are fun dog shows and you can take dogs even if they are not showing.

So, I will double check first but should be able to take her with me!

Forgot to mention, check out www.dogpages.co.uk as they have a place that people post fun dog shows (usually ran by a rescue to raise funds). As far as I know there is one nearly every weekend across the UK.
