My DF has finally agreed after a while of me nagging to let me have a kit so im starting my search! I have been up to the cattery a few doors up from me and spoke to the owner about this and he has advised me not to get a kit from rescue and to get a cat that in his words "hasn't seen a bad day in it's life"

I certainly don't want a ferrall as if it has been taught to survive by it's mum then it will already have learned behaviour, and to be honest I think it's fine that rescues do the injections and spaying etc but thats something i would like to do myself.

Also I dont think a recue would let me have one as I have a 7 year old a 4 year old and 3 dogs, 2 EBT'S and a bloomin gorgeous staffy. Even though the dogs are not even fazed by them one bit i know a home check would leave me dissapointed a bit angry and there is always a cat coming in my garden to have a poop and the dogs just sit and watch!

I have fully thought about this and i know a cat (or any other animal) is not for xmas I can afford vets bills and food, toys etc etc and more importantly i can give a kit a forever home which it wont be turfed out of when it gets a bit older.

Any help appreciated but please no lectures about dogs and cats etc as I have fully thought this through and have not made the decision to add to my family lightly.

Thanks all x

Sorry Kate I dont want to come across as being nasty but I wouldnt listen to a word of what that person in your OP has said.

Some rescue kittens, are born at the rescues. Pregnant mums go into rescues each and everyday, have their kittens there and are just looking for homes. I know that there are some beautiful kittens in the dog pound (They were some a few days ago) and I know that C.A.T.S have kittys come in each and everyday.

Please, dont be put off a rescue - some will be happy to rehome one with/without dogs im sure. If you rescue a cat its probably the best thing you could to for the cat. I recently got a rescue from the dog pound and she is amazing. Shes abit timid (she had a litter of kittens far too young and it shook her up abit I think) but shes great. Shes settled in to our household so fast. She now follows my older cats lead - lays on our bed and comes for snuggles every 2minutes. Please please dont disregard all rescues :)

lots of animals wind up in rescue, not due to neglect, but often these days due to their family losing their pet-friendly home and being forced to give up their loved pet to allow them onto a housing list!

Rescue isn't always about neglect and/or truama!

I didn't think I'd stand a chance of a rescue centre letting me have a kitten as I have a young child and a Staffie. They were absolutely fine. Homechecks aren't so bad (or at all bad actually). A quick chat is all and remember your kitten (at many rescues) will have continued care with neuturing/injections etc. It's a total pressue off, seriously

I know where you're coming from as I would have taken on any kitten at the time but knowing I had the extra care and back up from the rescue centre was a true weight off

At one time I had 3 Staffies and 3 cats - the cats all from Cats Protection in Birmingham, who were more than happy to home them with me!! And I fostered for CP in Sheffield, despite still having 2 Staffies.

As others have said, not all rescue cats have been traumatised by bad treatment, and most rescues wouldn't even try and re-home a feral cat, especially to somebody with no experience.

I'd definitely look at rescue kittens (or cats), apart from anything else, it does mean you're not stuck trying to re-home a cat if it doesn't settle into your household. And that does happen - not all cats are the same, some get on with dogs and children, some don't.

I got both my current dogs from rescue organisations - it was nice to have the reassurance that if they hadn't got on with my existing pets, then I wouldn't have had the responsibility for finding good homes for them myself.

EEL69 do you need to get your cat mum and the male neutered soon? Sorry to go off subject but there are an awful lot of kits out there already without adding to them. Cats Protection 03000 121212 is their phone no. Thanks.
