There are fireworks going off outside, Takara is laid next to me not bothered in the slightest (Eddy's going deaf so can't hear them)

I'm so impressed :D

In previous years I've had to set her up a little den for her to go to to feel a little safer and she would sit there quivering. Last year, I continued with the desensitisation that I'd been doing before but with the help of Serene-Um. Instantly better!

This year she just aint bothered.

Can you tell I'm pleased? :D

Thats good :) Pip is fine with fireworks, she is just a bugger with any sort of animal on tv. Oh, and an advert for processed peas she doesn't like :loopy:

 haha bless her!

Funny isn't it, Takara barks at naughty dogs on TV - like if I'm watching Dog Borstal, but if the dog is behaving she doesn't... she also loves watching Spartacus...

how did you get her used to it?mine dosent seam bothered in the slighest but i always thought along the lines of if they are scared completely egnore it or that ould reinforcing it?

Ignoring it works for some dogs - because you're not bothered, so why should they be?

It didn't work for T. I spent two years practicing desensitisation. She had a little den to go to, I tried throwing her favourite toy whenever a firework went off or throwing her a tasty treat each time so that the firework because associated with something good - they hear a firework, they get a treat but it never worked til I gave her serene-um. I gave it her once and did what I had been doing before, and she just accepted it straight away. This year it's like she can't hear them.

Serene-Um increases the dog's levels of serotonin and allows them to accept reinforcement easier in stressful environments - despite the name, it doesn't work as a sedative and isn't intended for that purpose.

Here you go - posted it all here :) http://pawsitivelypets-theblog.blogspot.com/

Oh dear!
I did speak to someone who said that their dog seemed really tranced with Serene-Um, I've also spoken to people who gave their pets Serene-Um and it didn't help at all.

Serene-Um wouldn't have helped Takara's problems by itself and I didn't see any improvement just by giving it but it obviously helped me work with her.

I guess it just affects some animals differently to others.

How long does Serene-um take to start working? I tried a Dap infuser previously with no success. The fireworks started round me on Friday and my lot are all in complete panic mode. They shake so hard and lose any sense of reason. One of my dogs is anticipating them - as soon as it gets dark at this time of year she's knows what's coming. I've had all 3 trying to climb onto my chest together in an effort to get close to my face, which is awkward to say the least and we've had a few puddles as 1 dog refuses to go outside for a wee. 1 of my dogs is already on Zylkene daily for panic attacks and the other 2 are easily spooked so we're not starting off on the best foot. I dread this time of year. The "keep your pets indoors on fireworks night" is not posible with dogs especially as round here it's fireworks 4 weeks!!

pt cru, it says to start it 3-4 days previous to the event you want it for but I've never had to. I, like loopylass have seen it work very quickly. I used to give it Eddy when he got stressed out and it worked very quickly to settle him down but when I gave it to Takara to help with the fireworks and also when we were going to a behaviour workshop that I knew she would find stressful, I gave it to her and didn't see any immediate change in her behaviour, she wasn't calmer particularly, or sedated or anything - she was just able to do things that she would've otherwise been too stressed to do.

Edit: I'd ask your vet about the zylkene though if you're thinking of giving the serene-um to the dog on zylkene. I'm not sure if they should be given together. Neither are drugs, per se - but I don't know if they'd clash.

Thanks - will do. He's been on Diazepam at the same time as Zylkene so hopefully there won't be a problem; I'll phone my vet tomorrow.

id love to know how to stop your dog from being scared of fireworks, my dog is petrified of them, but hes also quite a timid dog anyway, the other night, kids were letting fireworks off all night and it took us 45 mins to get our dog out to walk, so if anyone has any ideas how to stop them being scared please please do let me know.
