View Full Version : Boarding over Christmas
msbehavin 31-10-2009, 16:59 Hi all
Just wondered if anyone knew of any recommended boarding kennels that would be open over Christmas.
I'm away from 18th Dec to around the 30th. Just called Skew Hill as they are recommended on here and they will be closed over Christmas.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.
helenasq 31-10-2009, 17:18 Try Mutlins on Gleedless Rd. However they may be fully booked by now.
I think they maybe as one of my customers has tried to book in too!
Christmas is the one time we wouldn't be able to have Clivey Boy come stay, as we're away staying with (non-dog-friendly) family :(
I hope you get something sorted :(
Hope you find somewhere... Christmas is a time I wouldn't really be up for taking any dogs because it can be stressful enough with family coming and going etc. the dogs would be too easy to wind up especially if there's another dog added to the equation :(
Best of luck
Clive would have great fun winding your two up too Lotti :P

LOL you'd be amazed Strix. They're actually quite normal my dogs - they just never seem to want to demonstrate that when they see you!
We've had a few dogs to stay and they've always been great... my main worry has been Eddy but he's been a star whether it's been an older dog or a little puppy. In fact, when we had a wee dalmatian puppy come to stay, he decided to take the granddad role and show him how to dig and play
Takara has an issue with bitches coming to stay, and if they can be bullied she will - but if it's a stronger willed bitch or a dog she's just not bothered!
When xxhunniixx's "Lottie" came to stay, they got off to a rocky start with Lottie having just come into season and Takara trying to push her about but it didn't take long for her to realise Lottie meant business and she let her get on with it! LOL
But yeah - they are easily stressed and Christmas would be a terrible time to try adding another dog in!
Rainrescue 31-10-2009, 22:48 Msbehavin - try Jaycliffe Kennels - near to me - Karen and her girls are great with the dogs and they go for a walk twice a day.
No kennels are nice at any time of year, an the cold weather is horrid for them. They all have blankets and heating - but send his own bedding and lots of it to remind him of home - even a little day jacket - which I see many loved dogs in n kennels over winter.
Nowhere is like home and its horrid to have to put them in kennels, but at least if they are somewhere you know there are kind experienced staff - then it eases our guilt just a little.
Good luck - I'm sure Clive will be fine - have a nice hols

can second this, Karen and the girls have looked after several of our dogs good kennels ,knowledgable staff , and a pleasure to deal with .
msbehavin 01-11-2009, 11:29 Thanks for the recommendations everyone.
Jacqui, he is booked into Jaycliffe kennels near you. I told them you had recommended them them to me and they were very pleased :)
Strix/Lottie - thanks for considering having him but it had never crossed my mind to ask someone to take him into their home over Christmas - it's already too busy and stressful a time! He will be fine in the kennels I'm sure as they sound lovely and there are lots of recommendations on the internet about them.
Maybe after 2 weeks there he won't even want to come home! :(
LitleMermaid 01-11-2009, 13:30 The staff at Jaycliffe are fantastic-Karen's girls never fail to impress me when we go to pick up fosters or dogs that are being transported somewhere. Polite, helpful and friendly, they are just lovely lasses! I say it every time haddock and I leave :)
LOL you'd be amazed Strix. They're actually quite normal my dogs It was Clive I was commenting on ;)
That's one dog with a sense of humour and mischief! :D
Glad you're all sorted MsB!
How about Benrivic Boarding Kennels out at Ringinglow village? Located on a farm and they get twice daily romps around the fields :) Highly recommended.
holidayhutch 02-11-2009, 22:24 Sorry but after the state our Merlin came home in a year ago I wouldn't touch Jaycliffe with a barge pole. We had to take them to court and won. They care so much about the animals she didn't even enter a defence and it landed up with bailiffs going in to sort things out. He is still showing signs of the psychological damage as a result of how he was treated there and the injury he sustained.
We now use either Sandy Lane (just down the road from jaycliffes), or Fox Holes Animal Hotel in Barnsley
Rainrescue 02-11-2009, 23:35 I visit the kennels regularly and I know the staff are very caring and knowledgeable and have boarded dogs there and never had any problems and I am very particular about where our dogs go and how they are treated.
The owner is one of the most knowledgeable people I know about all aspects of dogs and has a very good client base.
A lot of dogs get upset when going into kennels - its an alien place - and they are on concrete floors with no carpets, or tv or general every day sounds of home. Nobody is there to talk to them, or let them out to pee when they want to - its the same in most boarding establishments - except for the small home boarding ones.
Personally I have ensured that I have never had to put my dogs into kennels - but life isn't always like that - and it doesn't normally hurt them by going into them for a few weeks, whilst people take a couple of weeks away from every day life.
I am going on my personal opinion of what I see on a regular basis and would put my own dogs there - if I ever chose to board them so dont worry - Clive will be fine.
holidayhutch 03-11-2009, 00:00 If you are happy Rain then that's great, but I dont consider leaving a dog in a dirty kennel in it's own urine for 8 days so that the fur literally burnt off his feet and through his pads, leaving them ulcerated and burning to be the actions of a company or owner who cares for, or who has knowledge of animals.
You might want to refresh yourself with the original thread http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=407186&page=3(post 46 has the pics) of just how bad things were after a short stay, and his condition was nothing to do with not being at home, or in the company of people it was down to pure neglect!!! The grooming staff even admitted to using pure bleach on him to try and get the urine stains out of his fur before we returned!!!!!
Rainrescue 03-11-2009, 00:30 I hadn't seen the thread previously holidayhutch and Merlin does look terrible and it must have been a terrible time for you all to go through. Those feet look so sore.
I can't possibly think what can have happened to have caused it as I know the dogs all get cleaned out twice a day, and are walked twice a day - and they clean down with Comficlean which isn't caustic as that again is something that I look for in a kennels.
I hope he is better now - he looks gorgeous.
