It worked for me very recently. :) I was looking for a Border Collie cross puppy, (as in really young puppy), but was absolutely taken aback when browsing the rescue sites by how people seem to have such a tendency to get rid of Border Collie's once they get past twelve months old or so and start becoming extremely lively, (which is, in all honesty, one of their virtues along with their intelligence, charm and general attitude), and we ended up getting an 18 month old instead. Love him to bits just as much as I would have done with an extremely young puppy. They do have a way of worming into ones affections extremely quickly. Rainrescue 31-10-2009, 23:12 Oh right mattGGT - thats what I thought originally - but then thought that the poster must just be after a puppy. ok Have a look on our website under the RESCUE COLLIES section here> http://www.rainrescue.co.uk/border-collies.htm They often have some lovely young dogs in - and I can highly recommend the Border Collie Trust and Wiccaways 2 rescues that I know take in lots of collies and collie types. Matt - I'm so pleased that you looked wider than your original request then. so many people think that there aren't dogs out there needing homes - just because its not always easy to find them. But there are and most of them - especially collies - are just in the wrong home - usually because the people aren't as active as the collies are. SamKirk1986 03-11-2009, 14:19 Hi, I got a border collie 3 year, pure pedigree from a woman who lives in Mexborough on Church street, she breeds them. I also got another collie 2 years ago from a farm in lincolnshire. x. MattGGT 04-11-2009, 09:17 Matt - I'm so pleased that you looked wider than your original request then. As am I. :) so many people think that there aren't dogs out there needing homes - just because its not always easy to find them. I did notice that with the Collies, when we were searching. They occasionally turn up in normal Rescue Centres, but in general they appear to be dealt with via specific rescuers/re-homers rather than general centres. Strix 06-11-2009, 01:24 they aren't a breed who cope well in a confined kennel environment - being built to work as they are, so it's no surprise that specific rescues is a better place to look for them Besides, they're not as commonly found as a household pet anymore (probably because people know how much hard work they can be ;) ), so presumably are less common in general rescue centres than they may have once been soad 06-11-2009, 20:48 Check todays Sheffield star. This is the numbers thats printed 01433 620390 Rainrescue 07-11-2009, 00:21 Yep - so true We got the lovely old collie guy out of sheffield pound last week and Haddock and Little Mermaid drove the cutie all the way down to The Border Collie Trust in Staffordshire. He will be fine down there. They know their collies, and lots of people looking for collies go to them and get the advise and support that they need from them. Very specialised breed Strix as you say and need homes that understand those needs. More borders get rehomed after having been bought for a 'family' dog - only to have to give them away when they start rounding up the kids and nipping their ankles when they down do as their told. (mmmm can't fault that). Very specialised breed Strix as you say and need homes that understand those needs. There are several around here in kennels/pounds, (and I would probably have tried homing all of them if funds and the wife had allowed :D), and they are definitely not happy in those places. Saying that though, I can't say as any dog looked happy at being caged. More borders get rehomed after having been bought for a 'family' dog - only to have to give them away when they start rounding up the kids and nipping their ankles when they down do as their told. (mmmm can't fault that). Ours isn't too bad on the herding front, (as of yet), but he's most definitely a wheel chaser. :D I think we'll have some more traits appear as he settles in completely though. Rainrescue 07-11-2009, 11:52 Matt - don't forget that Twibstix on here - her and her mum run agility classes over at Wickersley and these borders just love to be busy - thats why they do things like chase - cos they can't do their instinct Often once they have something to put their mind into - and release a bit of energy - most problems subside. good luck - and at least you know what you have taken on bless him |
