Just wondered if anyone got an email about this new club. I have searched the forum but can't find a thread on it. Anyways it looks like it is opening where Purple used to be and i think it's a really good idea - just what Sheffield needs!!!

Here's the website http://www.fuel-sheffield.co.uk

Oooh, that looks good. Shame the location is a bit rammy though. I'll give it a go to see if it's any good.

I hope it'll be having a full refurb though since it's Berlins / Purple days. Another Dempsey's is NOT what we need!

Will there be a door charge?
I'm guessing if it's marketing itself as a nightclub insead of a bar (which is what berlins was) then I guess they will be.

If it's nice inside tho... good on em.

Well Fuel in Hull has been going for a while, so lets hope this one lasts.

It looks promising doesnt it.

We need an alternative to dempseys/xes which have become sooooo "last year".

I reckon that's been the downfall of the other full time gay bars in Sheffield. If they do make a nice job of it inside, I think it might make a world of difference to it's popularity.

OOOH, YAY!!! Full time LGB as well! Their ethos sounds fab - I hope they deliver on it. We SO need something new that isn't spit 'n' sawdust, in a dodgy part of town and playing sh*te music . . .

I demand the right to dance somewhere stylish!!

Who's going to the opening night then?!

There are these two guys who have set the gay scene alight in Hull over the past couple of years. They opened not only Fuel, but also Affinity.

Here are some titbits.......

"Fuel is the stylish home of Hull's gay scene and also provides the perfect setting for all, fun-loving, attitude-free party people. A wide variety of entertainment 7 nights a week. Varied menu throughout the week." (thisisull - coming up soon - website)

"The perfect haven for everyone that loves quality music and just wants to have a good time. Fuel has an amazing cocktail and shooter list, features the region's best funky house DJ's and has a glorious open-air terrace." (visiting hull nightlife website)

"The latest gay-friendly superclub, part of the Fuel empire. Affinity boasts 3 floors, 2 bars, a VIP room and 3 lounges, all with amazing decor. Table service, a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of eye candy, all as standard." (visiting hull nightlife website)

"Hull is one of the up-and-coming gay areas in the North. Contrary to popular belief, Hull actually has gay venues, including Fuel, Fountation and Affinity". (Hull Student Union freshers website)

Fuel is located in an old bank building, with chic, all-white decor. These two guys have really put Hull on the gay map. And hopefully what they can do for Hull.....they can do for Sheffield too! I'm wishing them luck with this new venture!

Love Fuel in Hull so am well chuffed it's cummin' to Sheffield. Why will you need to be a member as you don't need to be in Hull! Also lets hope they don't have an R'n'B night as I hate it! When I was last in Hull (March '05) they had been closing gay venues,Foundation and Affinity, so lets give Sheffield loads of support!

I think that will make or break it, though if they have been to look at Dumpseys they might think we're not bothred about that kind of thing.

I'm worried about this membership thing though, if it's going to just be a bar why do you need membership ?
What happens if my mates come up from London, will they not be allowed in ?

redrobbo
03-08-2005, 06:20 PM
Like nick2, I'm not sure why Fuel are insisting on membership.

It could be a way of ensuring that they publicise events, promotions, etc., via mail-outs?

I've checked with the Council's Licensing section - an application has been received from Fuel for a transfer of the license from Purple (the former licensee). Not familiar with Purple - does anyone know if it was a members only club? If so, that might explain why Fuel are seeking membership.

nick2
03-08-2005, 06:26 PM
Purple was a complete dump, filled with all the people who couldn't get into a decent pub in town. Renowned for underage drinkers and fighting.

Perhaps the idea behind the membership is to make sure these former customers don't get into the new place ?

SpiderPete
03-08-2005, 06:33 PM
or it could be an indictation to them to see how many people are interested in membership ... all works out to figures...

I have done mine anyway.

I would guess if ya a member u could bring people in, they obviously wont turn people away.

I am sure we will all know in good time.

03-08-2005, 07:36 PM
alleluyah! hopefully it's not going to end up as a new Dempsey's, and a bit of competition between the 2 venues might bring the best out of the gay scene in Sheffield!
Shame i'll be in Provence for opening night, but i've applied for membership, so see you all there in September!

Hi Guys,

We are Danny and Carlton, we look after the entertainment and marketing for Fuel.
We are glad you are all interested and excited about the club!
We can see you all have loads of questions and if i can i will answer them for you.

Fuel is coming to sheffield to obviously expand in a business sense but we unlike most businesses we also have some other very clear objectives with everything we do.

We are firmly committed to building the 'community spirit' within the gay community and doing whatever we can to make life a bit better for our community.

We try our hardest to continually bring new ideas, entertainment and concepts to the scene. After two years with our crowd in Hull we are the busiest we have ever been.
This is purely because we don't just sit on our arse's, draining the money from the gay scene. We reinvest most of so that we can all benefit from an amazing venue and some awesome nights out!
The owners and team are gay clubbers too and we want to have as much fun as you do!

Our ethos is totally genuine.
Don't get me wrong, no one is perfect and we all make mistakes but we will always try our hardest to be the best we can be!

With regards to Fuel Sheffield, we are here for the long term.
We would like you to accept and support us just as much as Hull have.
In return we will give you a venue to be proud of and a community and scene that other cities will be envious of!
We believe that Sheffield is the 4th largest city in the country, then we want you to work with us to make the Scene AT LEAST the 4th best gay scene in the country as well!

You will all have to come and have a look at the venue to make your own minds up about what we do. We don't expect to please everyone but we will try to delight most of you!
We want this to be a long journey and there will be teething problems etc but we will always try our hardest to do right by the gay community.

Regarding our building, formerly purple, we are fully aware that the place has a reputation. This will not change what we have to offer. Our door team are second to none and you can rest assured that we do not have fights. in two years in hull i don't remember anything more than the occasional domestic.
ATTITUDE FREE IS OUR FIRST PRIORITY!
The area around Fuel and it's neighbouring venues have either closed, quietened right down or are decent venues with decent customers. therefore we feel the location is now one of the most suitable in the city.

Our membership policy is strict and it does run in Hull as well.
This is for numerous reasons namely...

To stop idiots getting in...
membership gives our doorteam the excuse to turn idiots away without having to pick fault with them and cause a scene on the front.

Keeping you informed...
so we can let you know what is going on at the club, we collect you're details and mailout, text and send you eflyers.
WE WILL NOT GIVE YOUR DETAILS TO ANYONE ELSE!

The Law...
to help us detect underage drinkers and other people who break licensing law.

DOOR CHARGE
We do charge on the door at weekends and for nights in the week where there is special entertainment. we try to give you the best entertainment and it costs us lots of money! You will be getting your monies worth!
More details will soon be on the website and sent out to our members.

DECOR
We have decided to keep some of the best features of the building, and eliminate the worst, overall, a cool, clean, clubby environment. Fuel is being transformed from what the previous businesses looked liked. it will be cool, trust me!
We continually refurbish our venues, Hull has had two refurbs in two years! Things will improve month on month with your support!

right, our fingers are knackered and we have floors to sand so we are going to have to leave it there. if you have any questions please email
info@fuel-sheffield.co.uk
or check out the website as shown in the first post in this thread.

we all look forward to throwing open the doors on thursday 25th august and can't wait to meet you all!
Stick with us Sheffield, you are in for the ride of your lives!

ps. if you fancy a night out of town, you can always check out Fuel in Hull to see what is in store for you!!

I'm really glad theres somewhere else to go out in Sheffield. Previous attempts here always stopped before I ever had a chance to go see them for myself so I'm determined not to let this happen again!

I have recently been thinking that I may have to go back onto the straight scene so its come at the right time for me!

I just hope there are lots of women there too!! :D

Question2: What if your sexuality doesn't fit the prescribed choices?

Question3: Am I being picky????

Hi guys,

The sexuality question is purely for us to get an overall percentage profile. That information is not used in any way about any individual.
Yes, if you don't fit one of the options please choose the nearest one, it is only a statistical thing.

Thankyou for all of the positive comments and support from people. You will be delighted with the venue!

take care

City's new gay club just super

IT'S the news Sheffield's gay population has been waiting for...

The city's nightlife is being dragged into the 21st century with the opening of a gay superclub.

Fuel, on Arundel Gate, will open its doors for the first time on August 25 with a fanfare of disco, pop and drag queens. Club bosses keen to cash in on the Sheffield pink pound say interest in the "outrageous" club is already at fever point.

The club's website received more than 3,000 hits in three days and 600 people have already signed up for membership.

Currently, many gay people travel to Leeds, Nottingham and Manchester in search of trendy gay bars and nightclubs.

Carlton Whitfield, co-owner of Fuel, said: "It's shocking that the fourth largest city in the country has such a big gap in the market.

"Sheffield is a beautiful city – we want to work with the gay community and help raise the standards of the nightlife."

Among the attractions will be resident drag queen Raunchy Rusty, two identical twin DJs and 15 "trashy tranny" dancers.
There will also be jugglers, stilt walkers, and even fire eaters... if Sheffield Council grants them a licence for the performance.

A star drag act in Ibiza, resident drag queen Raunchy Rusty is said to be banned from the isle after cartwheeling over a row of cars.

Legend has it she left Ibiza shortly after she fell through the roof of a soft top car during the daredevil act.

Carlton, aged 37, and his long-term partner Peter Kind launched a gay club, also called Fuel, two years ago in Hull.
Despite Hull's reputation as Britain's capital of homophobia, Fuel Hull now has a loyal following and two coach loads of Hull clubbers will attend the Sheffield venue's launch later this month.

"We are not trying to rival Manchester's gay scene, we want a club for gay people to come to with straight friends too," added Carlton.

"Because Sheffield hasn't had that many gay places, loads of people go to the city's straight bars so there's a lot of harmony.
"We are hoping that this will stop any homophobia and people who are just curious can come along too.

"When we opened in Hull, people were queuing around the block."His boyfriend Peter, aged 43, is a professional big band singer and will perform at the Sheffield club.

Carlton is currently redecorating the venue with sumptuous burgundy, golds and creams – and perspex podiums.
Coun Tim Rippon, Sheffield Council's cabinet member for economic development, planning and culture, said: "We would support anything that caters for the gay community, especially if people feel that this has been lacking from the city centre.

"I'm unsure whether it will have much of an effect on tourism, but we will have to wait and see."
The first "gay weddings" will take place in Sheffield later this year.

From December, gay couples will be able to pledge their love to one another in civil partnership ceremonies.

i think the secret to the success of this new gay night is attracting people from outside of sheffield like all the big gay clubs do in other cities, manchester, brighton, etc. Sheffield fails because its the same old people going to these new places and then people get bored after the first few nights because its the same old faces - sheffield by itself just doesn't have enough sexy gay people

Well this is not exactly true. I went to Viva Climax recently and noticed faces from Dempseys/Xes but alot of faces I had not seen before. Doesnt matter whcih gay scene you go on they always have the "same old faces"

With it being open every night may well attract people from both pubs, plus some news ones, as I am sure it will be tons better than those 2 put together.

I get the feeling its here to stay, which is what we need.

I'm not being funny or anything peter41, but I posted the article from the Star for people following this thread who didn't get chance to see it.

Just because you may have read it, doesn't mean everyone else who is interested has, I was only trying to share some information on the new club.

Still not sure what the point of your original post was, where is the other thread on Fuel?

If I sounded a bit snappy its because I found your "Have you tried the "search" button ???" comment quite patronising, it's not like I'm a new member on these forums.

Although I don't post on the SheffieldForum much these days because of all the bitchiness and negativity that seems to run through alot of the threads.

Sheffields gay scene really needs a kick up the arse. I hope this is it.

I wonder why the opening night is on a thursday?

I work on fridays and yes I am bitter, and 35, so I do not venture out on a 'school' night.

I have been wondering why a Thursday night, it a odd one, Friday would have been better and I am like you, got work on Friday, and I am probably bitter as well, and don`t venture out during the week as I have a habit of having a terrible hangover the next day, and cannot make the 25th opening night, (cannot get the Friday off) but I deffo be down to sample the place during the week to see what it is like.

yes peter, we do flyers.

why?

To distribute amongst my gay fiends, talking about it is fine, but to show them something (eg a flyer) gets more interest.

Just submitted my membership application. Be good to have a club where you can go and have a decent night out without the usual compliment of drunken, knuckle dragging morons spoiling the evening.

Best of luck to Fuel: let business be brisk, nights out fun and long may it reign - I'll see you all there! :D

Dumpseys and XS must be getting pretty worried, though it's a shame that one (or both) of them might close if this place takes off, and were back to one place to choose from again.

Bad_Hair_Day
15-08-2005, 05:22 PM
Maybe Dempseys should concentrate more on the early evening slot? Fuel won't be open until 9pm each night so there's still room for another bar to be open earlier for the pre-clubbers or the straight-out-from-work crowd.

If they spent a bit of money doing the place up, so it looks less like a pensioners luncheon club (have you seen the place at lunchtime?), then they might just be able to cash in on the extra custom brought into town by Fuel.

nick2
15-08-2005, 05:45 PM
9pm ?

Damn, I was hoping for somewhere I could have a pint in on my way home from work.

I'll probably only be going on Friday or Saturday night then.

Bad_Hair_Day
15-08-2005, 05:55 PM
Yeah, that's what it says on their web site, although the Hull one open's during the day (from noon) so maybe the Sheffield one will eventually - maybe they're waiting to see how popular it is?

Yeea! My Fuel membership card came today along with some cool little flyers, cant wait to see the United Nations there in September:thumbsup:

Dempseys must be very worried right now, Xs will not be bothered though cos they get most of their custom from the 2am-4am crowd.

22-08-2005, 03:26 PM
i dont think dempseys has to be worried, there can be more than one gay place in town im sure without the other declaring bankruptcy :D

hopefully though this will lead to a choice of gay nights and venues in sheffield, rather than the same calendar venues every month

shame though that opening night is a thursday, clashing with pride in manchester and doesn't vip at takapuna run on a thursday? could possibly become a pre-bar?

im looking forward to it though and seeing who turns out!

I think the timing and opening of the club over the last summer bank holiday weekend is great!

Not everyone wants to or can afford to go over to Manchester Pride, its great that we have now been given the choice.

Ya probably right about Dempseys, that place would survive a nuclear holocaust:hihi:

VIP isn't marketed as a gay night anymore is it more gay friendly these days.

Come on Peter, think before you post. If this thread was about a regular night club opening and someone voiced a concern about it being overrun by gays, there would be an outcry.

I for one am pleased that the club has an inclusive policy where tolerant people from all walks of life will be welcomed!

THWACK! :hihi:

Seriously though, I see no reason why we can't debate this point. For myself, I would hate it if this new gay club disallowed non-gays. I've taken straight friends into gay clubs in the past. They know the scene, and they accept it. I don't think we should get into the business of banning anybody entering a gay club just because of their sexuality.

no I mean that having a club that only gay people can go to will give homophobes another reason to hurt gay people. It will be targeted and attacked.

That would be fun - having intograted clubs - imagine the homophobia when a gay man chats up a str8 man cause a gayman can no longer decide who is gay or not, cause the club allows both in. :gag:

I might end up being confused cause I cannot tell the difference and might turn str8 :o

But peter41, a homophobe is not likely to be in a gay club is he? And any straight guy in a gay club is likely to know that he may be chatted up, and would surely just respond by saying he's straight. But to avoid any confusion arising, just ask a guy what he thinks is Kylie's or Madonna's best song - and your gay antennae will soon tell you if he's batting on our side or not!

Well opening night last night, and we went along as guests and had a great time.

The production and sound system was fabulous (and expensive) and if they keep it up they deserve to do well! With a bit of luck they will remember not to use sparklers near the smoke detectors in future ;)

They need to to drop the bongo's (awful) and trumpeter (seemed to need monitors - was miles off beat).

Still, it should be good.

I'd love to be able to tell you what the decor was like, but I can't; the place was so heaving with bodies you couldn't see the walls! The music was fab, especially early on when they were playing cheesy camp tunes! 8)

The atmosphere was great, and the staff friendly. I think it will be a really big hit if they continue like they started!

I went to the opening night last night was much bigger inside than I thought it would be and was very busy.

The music was pretty good, great sound systems and Rusty was great fun. Agree with Tony's comments on the bongo's and trumpeter, was kinda off putting when your dancing to a song that you know.

Interior was ok, I never went in the club when it used to be Berlins but from what my housemate told me it didn't look much different to how it looks now.

The carpets definitely need to go, carpets in nightclubs BIG no no, as all that split stale booze doesnt smell too good, it would make the club look so much fresher and cooler if was ripped out:thumbsup:

Bar and door staff was really great, very friendly, looking forward to see what other nights are going to be like.

And it's Arundel Gate, innit, not EYRE Street?

I had a really good night, and it sounds like they have big plans for it - splitting the one room into two etc....

Nice atmosphere, if a bit too full for me. Maybe the beginning of a wave of similar clubs (fingers crossed!)

I'm definately gonna try some of the mid-week things, and Anne, you're more than welcom to tramp down with us whenever you fancy it. Just PM me.

Peter, sorry for ringing you so late, thought you were there! Was gonna buy ya a drink!

Don't expect any progress on the regeneration of the moor this decade, it aint going to happen for quite a while yet.

Sorry matey, but I never heard such drivel. The owners of Fuel would not have gone to the expense of opening a second venue if they didn't have a secure tenancy and the chance to make the club a viable business prospect.

I chatted to one of the co-owners of the club on the opening night; I'd be very very surprised if the above rumours are anything more than scare-monger tactics from people who want to see Fuel fail.

I'll see some of you there on Saturday night!

oh,

the wonderful world of gay rumours!

as with every other licensed premise in the country we are subject to applying for the new 24 hour license system.
so no we don't just have a 3 month license.
why would we do all this work just to close?

if this building did get knocked down it won't be for a years and we would just relocate anyway.

fuel will never be going straight.

to be honest this sounds like the petty bitching that we try to avoid.

rest assured we do exactly what we say we are going to do.

we also leave the rumours, bitching and generally low standards to others.

come on guys - this is why you haven't had a decent club here for years - lets move forward and drag sheffield out of it's rut!

I agree with you Kristian, I was going to reply but was making a cup of tea.

I dont thiink Fuel would come to Sheffield for 3 months and spend money, it doesnt sound very clever.

It does sound like "dempsey" rumours to me.

I for one wish Fuel all it's success.

I personally agree with Kristian, who in their right minds would go to the expense of renovating a club into Fuel to shut down months later?

It sounds to me like a Dempsey's rumour which is quite sad.
They should be working together rather than trying to compete.

Dempseys started similar rumours about VIP when we started off, it's a shame given the current state of Sheffields gay scene. Places should work together and promote each other rather than compete... there is room for both (not sure if there is custom for both all week, but only time will tell).

Good luck to Danny, Cartlon and tribe with Fuel, I have full confidence they'll make it a success.

It is a shame the pubs cannot all work together, and create a gay scene that Sheffield once had many many decades ago (well not that many)

It seems a shame that gay people in Sheffield have to travel to places like Manchester and Leeds to have a "good night out",

Hopefully Fuel is the answer, and we will be supporting it on Saturday night.

hello again,

martynsheff - could you poss tell me what forum the origional message is on please mate? would like a fair chance to discuss it.

as far as working together goes i have some things to tell you all.

prior to opening we sent letters to ALL of the other gay venues and nights, asking them to come to our opening night as vip's and suggesting that want to work together with everyone in the city to create a vibrant scene that people will travel to.

since that time we have met with club xcess, homo mad and one of the people from fairy likuid in order to see what we can do together.

we are now in the process of helping organise a pride style event with homo mad that will grow very rapidly in the next two years.

we are discussing national advertising for the entire sheffield gay scene with club xcess.
(who are on board, and are now running buses from fuel at closing time on fridays and saturdays).

we really, really want to build the city up and want to publicly challenge everyone else out there to put up or shut up!!

we are here with an open door - asking all of you to join us in making sheffield a better place for gay people.
together we can drag loads of people into the city. making it better for all of us.
so why don't you all learn from the past, stop bitching and pulling your own scene apart and work together to build it up!

we are here to stay and would like you all work side by side with us!

(will any forum users please post this message anywhere else it may be read - thankyou)

Plain Talker
03-09-2005, 11:58 AM
from the doors of the Devonshire Cat;-

leaving the the the Dev Cat, go to your right, till you meet the next road, (Trafalgar Street)

Take a right, down Trafalgar Street to Charter Row.

Cross Charter Row and walk left, past Empire Club/Pub, towards Debenhams.

Take a right , round the corner from Debenhams, and down Furnival gate, keeping Mcdonalds on your right.

Keep on that side of the road, pass the Sunwin House Co-op (used to be Redgates?).

Cross the little side road (Eyre Lane) that runs beside the co-op.

At the junction of Eyre Street, turn right, and walk about ten or fifteen yards and you are at the Fuel premises, (the old berlin's / hoffenbraus).

I estimate it should take you less than ten minutes to walk between the Dev, and Fuel.

If you have got to matilda street, and the Zero club, you've gone too far, ;) lol.

Hope that helps?

Hi Guys,

glad you all had a good night last night!
i tried to find you all but had no luck.
please come and ask for me next time you are in!

as you can see, the overall deal with fuel is good.
we have had and are trying to sort out some teething problems.

therefore...

there will be air conditioning soon

the carpet will be gone soon

we shouldn't run out of bitter again

and the fire alarm shouldn't go off again!

all that said, everywhere has teething problems and i think these ones aren't to bad.

regarding a place for girls -
FUEL IS FOR EVERYONE - BOYS & GIRLS
the gay community shouldn't be segregated.

anyway please keep the feedback coming - good or bad!

take care!

If you want to go because you are a student there are loads of student nights in Sheffield.
If you want to go because you are a gay student why does it have to be a "student night" unless your just going for the cheap beer ?
