redrobbo 09-09-2006, 11:16 PM Shame no one does a HI-NRG night in Sheffield, saing that alot probably cannot even remember it.
Being a youngster myself, would you care to tell me what HI-NRG was all about? It was clearly before my time on the scene. :suspect:
SpiderPete 09-09-2006, 11:21 PM Being a youngster myself, would you care to tell me what HI-NRG was all about? It was clearly before my time on the scene. :suspect:
:nono: youngster indeed. lol
Anyway its all here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hi-NRG)

I must quote you some Hazel Dean lyrics in relation to your recent spat with Fuel:
"Whatever I do
wherever I go
I'm never coming back to you."
Funny or what?

Wrong song bensonhedges. I'd much prefer to quote the lyrics from Lonnie Gordon's song "Happenin' All Over Again".....
"And though I look for someone else
I never really want to walk away"
But sshh now, don't let onto Spiderpete that I know any HiNRG songs, else it'll give my age away.
bensonhedges 10-09-2006, 09:52 AM Oooh you've got me all nostalgic now (rushes off to dig out some very old tapes).
redrobbo 10-09-2006, 10:23 AM :nono: youngster indeed. lol

Well, well, well, well! I learn something new every day on SF. I followed your link SpiderPete, and learned this about Hi-NRG music......
"The style is often associated with gay promiscuity, thus Miquel Brown's "So Many Men, So Little Time" and Hazell Dean's "Searchin' (I Gotta Find a Man)" and Paul Lekakis's "Boom Boom Boom", whilst typically sung by women, are actually aimed at gay men. It is also associated with camp excess and gender bending by artists such as Divine, Sylvester, Pete Burns and RuPaul."
Thanks for the education. Now I know!
djscottk 10-09-2006, 02:33 PM Bleedin Hell Vicki Shepard? Didn't she used to be Alec Gilroy's Grandaughter? Well I would love to touch hazel's foo, perhaps I will suggest to have her at Fuel.
jane mcdonald would go down so much better.
Gayham 10-09-2006, 03:50 PM Well, well, well, well! I learn something new every day on SF. I followed your link SpiderPete, and learned this about Hi-NRG music......

YAY! Back to the days when gays were real gays and went to underground seedy butt clubs and listened to HI-NRG. Non of this cosmopolitan fancy bar equality gay marriage nonsense. Bring back discrimination (if you dont know me please note my post modernism) What about Jimmy Sommerville wasn't he HI-NRG but in a pop way, I remember he covered Sylvester's Mighty Real...i loved Sylvester, although I always thought he was not gay enough, but then I dont think Christopher Biggins is gay enough...
JohnnyBoi 10-09-2006, 09:01 PM With the insults on here from a member of fuel staff aside, I think Fuel has done well to listen to its customers on a few occaisons, ie when the club was divided into two rooms to accomodate different music tastes and when the pop music was moved into the larger room on a Friday night. There are always going to be quibbles and improvements (on whatever scale) to be made to any club, and as a regular, the only dissatisfaction I have had (as fault of my own) has been as a result of me going far too often and therefore, the experience becoming repititious. It makes sense to have the limited staff working on the bar as in comparison, I think the cloakroom is of less importance (even though it is still relevent). If someone did work on there to meet users demands on here, then I think people would then be dissatisfied that they had to wait ages at the bar. I think people should just forgive and forget and be optimistic that the club will be forever making changes for the better. Especially now that the complaints have been highlighted to the current Fuel Manager.
nick2 10-09-2006, 09:22 PM I can Hazel Dean rocks! But then I'm an old gay.....
But do you remember Seventh Avenue (Loves gone mad) and Carol Jiani (Hit an run lover) when they were on at Uropa ?
I only vaguely remember, I was totaly rat-arsed and fell down the stairs on the way out. I fell down stairs a lot when I was younger, the ones at Stars (above the ice rink) were especialy treacherous.
UKSentinel 10-09-2006, 10:10 PM Believe it or believe it not, I remember seeing Carol Jianni at The Albert many, er.. many moons ago. My favourite hi nrg record will always be No Frills Love by Jennifer Holiday (she's the black gospel singer on Ali McBeal)
happysherpa 10-09-2006, 11:42 PM the only reason there was staff shortage..was because some of the staff took fuel to another venue ..leaving sheffield fuel to suffer :hihi:

Ah The Albert! Now there's a trip down memory lane. I used to write their pub quizzes for them.
I suppose SpiderPete is now going to suss out that my youthful looks disguise an older age.
UKSentinel 10-09-2006, 11:55 PM Yeah, those were the days, lock in til 2am and the cleanest toilets this side of the pennines. Had some brilliant nights down there

Oh I used to do their quizzes every week.
All this time we would have all been there and never noticed that a few years .... later we would all meet on ere, small world.
Note I said "few years".
I wonder what happened to their bar staff :suspect: wonder if they come on ere as well :suspect:
Meaks 11-09-2006, 12:00 AM I wonder what happened to their bar staff :suspect: wonder if they come on ere as well :suspect:

SpiderPete 11-09-2006, 12:02 AM Some of them must be nearly as old as you! :o ;)
They may well be dear, may well be..........
Of course you are too young to remember The Albert :P
UKSentinel 11-09-2006, 12:03 AM LOL - I used to work at the Albert in the first year or so of it opening. I've seen some of the others around on girliedar but not on here. Gloria (Stephen) runs a pub in Chesterfield these days. Adam has pubs and then doesn't have pubs, lol. Wonder what happened to Eric!

ChewingGum 16-09-2006, 06:30 PM We DJ'd at Fuel last night in the pop room and just wanted to thank everyone that come along - we had a really great night (it was definitely a welcome change from the Fuel in Hull) and hope to be back soon (feel free to harass the management...).
If you're on MySpace please add us myspace.com/chewinggumhull - and check out our website so-addictive.co.uk/chewinggum

chrisfuel 17-09-2006, 06:38 PM Hi Everyone
Just a note for anyone who was coming to fuel this evening to see Javine.
I have just received a call from her manager to say that she is too ill to perform tonight.
I thought it would be courteous to let you all know - so as to avoid disappointment when you arrived at fuel later on.
Just in case you're still up for a party - we're still open and it's free entry and by way of compensation for Javine not coming, most drinks will be £1 tonight. :-)

Meaks 17-09-2006, 09:32 PM I got a text about this earlier.
Dear, dear me.
We went to the Lion's Lair this afternoon for cocktails only to be told all cocktails were off as they had nothing to make them with.
What an utter joke.

I can never understand how these Z Listers get so ill, I seen it happen loads! I imagine it means they have either stuffed one too many bags of coke up their nose or they have been invited to some VIP do where they are there just to fill the tables lol
Anyway I prefer without them so all good for me :-)
nick2 18-09-2006, 01:10 PM I can never understand how these Z Listers get so ill
For a start they shop at Iceland

367squadron 21-09-2006, 10:33 AM Depends what music you're into, i prefer Saturdays purely 'cos i love the Electro in the main room. But there's also the same old cheese in the other room.

Thanks Lilemma22. I like the sound of the stuff you're playing. Will make the effort to try it out in a couple of weeks. Not had something like this since Poptastic in the 'Centre for Popular Music' nights. I'll look forward to it.
BoroughGal 04-10-2006, 09:54 AM I've got to be objective here, and I'm not slagging Fuel off, but I went down a couple of Fridays ago for the Indie night, and it was absolutely empty. No atmosphere whatsoever. It's a shame, but we went to the Casbah in the end.

Yeah, I agree with you up to a point. Emptiness is going to breed emptiness, but by the same token, I don't know that it's my responsibility on one of my (rare) weekends out to stay in an empty place.
But I'm glad it was busy the last couple of weeks, and will give it another go at some point.

the crowd has picked up an awful lot, the past two weekends have been PACKED - its because summer is over and people cant sit in their gardens or have BBQ's etc anymore. Its getting gloomier so they want to go out and party plus the students are back.
PS Hope to see you tonight at Tackypuna

JohnnyBoi 16-10-2006, 09:28 PM Where has Vanity disappeared to? And why does Fuel seem ten times darker and smokier than before?
367squadron 16-10-2006, 11:03 PM Yeh the smoke is excessive lately, and the music is so loud. I'm only 19 and i think that so it's not my hearing!
Also couple of Fridays back one of the barmen charged me 7.90 for 2 double vodka's and Lemonade, it's usually 5 quid for 2, What's going on?
Edindave 17-10-2006, 12:02 AM It got busy again :-)
djscottk 17-10-2006, 11:33 AM the smoke machine is now on automatic timer, and the lights have been improved to create a change in atmosphere.. and thus they have done...
the speakers/sound system have been repaired so as to provide a better sound throughout the club without the 2 different rooms music overlapping each other.

Well, if you're going on about grammar, dear, you really shouldn't be starting a sentence with a conjunction.

Tyranna 11-11-2006, 03:07 PM Just popped over to fuel last night on the way to our Transvestite night Les Femmes at Xes, and met several of the regular crew at the door, including...Gayham/Gail!
However, last Sunday, I popped up to Fuel after a private party at Showroom, to find Fuel closed. I asked the Fuel crew about this last night, and Gayham said the Fuel 'is not open Sundays any more'.
Since when did Fuel start shutting on Sundays, and is there any prospect this side of Christmas, of it opening on more nights again? It would be helpful to inform people, so as to avoid wasted journeys for those living way out in the sticks!

I think with the cost of everything at the moment and the lack of real payrises out there I am not suprised customers are a bit thin on the ground Fuel is not the cheapest of places either and I have been there and found the drinks prices 'variable'.
Perhaps the only thing you can conclude is that between Dempseys, Xes and Fuel, they dilute the market too much with Fuel suffering the most by being such a big venue to fill? Just a thought before anyone accuses me of being anti-Fuel, I am not!
bensonhedges 16-11-2006, 08:20 AM It seems there's not half so many comments about Fuel these days - does that mean that everyone's happy with it now, or just resigned to it?

When I speak my mind with good or bad comments, my bad comments usually get shot down by Fuel staff members, (see previous pages on this thread) so I don`t bother anymore now. :)
Maybe everyone is happy now, who knows.

The place reminds me of a creche for 'barely legal' teens who want to mince about and have dramas. I prefer to go somewhere with more of a mixture.
graffy 16-11-2006, 02:40 PM agree with edindave, last time i went, i thought i had set foot into one of these clubs for under aged teens!

I'd agree with that, Edindave. To my knowledge I'm the only Drag Queen in Sheffield (Not counting a couple of fulltime professional Drag Artistes who do spots at Fuel, and another based in Sheffield who tours the country), who actually has a 'day' job, and the amount of money I am earning from my dayjob, I can tell you, is derisory!

I wouldn't say that is true. Compared with Climax, Dempseys, and even Club Xes, Fuel appears to accommodate a greater variety of ages both among customers and staff than ANY other LGBT club in Sheffield!
Tyranna 17-11-2006, 04:05 PM Just a quickie, everyone..!
Would any FUEL regulars like to take part organising events for a 'Mini-Arts Festival' which I am planning for June 2007, to coincide with Sheffield Pride 2007? Full details are on the
seperate thread: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=161624
I'd be glad if you can all contribute to the topic on its own thread, as so far I have not had any responses since posting it early yesterday.

Perhaps I have chosen the wrong nights but it is not relection of Fuel, they are not responsible for which part of the scene goes there. I can only presume that I am getting older as everyone is starting to look young :-(

Now I am not one to speak my mind............ but .......... going to anyway :P ..... what night do you go there ?
I find Dempseys (no I am not sticking up for them) has the mixed age gap of any gay venue, from 18 right up to 60+, you will find Xes has this as well, on a Friday, I know you have seen this, because I have seen you there when the age range has been very wide.
I havent been to Fuel for a long time, so have no idea what they are attracting now.
Although it is FREE tonight so you never know, i may have a mince in.
happysherpa 19-11-2006, 12:39 AM i arrived at Dempseys yesterday.. and the mood was a little dull... wasnt very inviting.. so me and my friends supped our drinks quickly..and headed to the Lions lair.. which greeted us with a much trendier atmosphere buzzing with youth and sexiness. Then we headed to Climax which was full of gay students haha
What is the future of Dempseys?
SpiderPete 19-11-2006, 12:32 PM What is the future of Dempseys?
Well you wont find that posting on the Fuel thread will ya, silly boy lol :P :P
Post it and read the Dempsey thread for ya answers.
Apparently the owners do read the thread.
mjk001 19-11-2006, 12:34 PM Dempseys have always seemed to have an heir of complacency, it was only when fuel/lions lair came on the scene that they had a shock to thier wallets enough to do some renovating, even then it was a half effort. They seem to have gone back into complacency again, all it'll take is one more decent gay bar in the city to completely destroy them. Although with all the silly new city centre housing schemes going on I doubt that'll happen.

UKSentinel 26-11-2006, 11:19 PM Must say that I visited Fuel last night for the first time in too many months. I only ever get to hear all the downside from Punters who have had a crap night. Personally, and this is a hand on heart statement too, I was shocked at how good the atmosphere was and just how busy it was. Top marks all round. Only complaint I've got is that some silly queen smashed a load of bottles on the dancefloor and despite me telling the glass collector 3 times, it took him an hour to clear it up. I'll definitely be going again very soon.
Can I recommend that the Fuel DJs post details of their most played songs on the website? I keep hearing some really good tracks but haven't got a clue who they are by and what they are called!

Fuel prices (http://www.sheffieldgayscene.co.uk/)
Looked at the link, but there's no indication of admission prices, so here goes with, to my best knowledge the entry prices:
Fuel is open only on thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights:
Thursday: I've never been, but as far as I know the entry price shouldn't be any more than £4.
Friday: Entry price £5, but if you come dressed in drag/outrageously, they might let you in free, but DON'T quote me on that...
Saturday: Entry Price is something like £5 0r £6 -I remember it was the latter when it was Poptastic-, so again, don't quote me on that.
Best thing is to ask on the door at Fuel on Thurs, Fri or Sat, if you are passing by one of those nights, and fancy visiting Fuel later on...
They also do some kind of membership scheme, so I would assume that membership includes entitlement to a discount.

oHHHH. Well just let me point point out a fact. I am a member of Fuel and sometimes attend and I also go to Climax. The reason I don't go out on the scene too often is because of ill mannared, unpleasent queens like you. All you can do is bitch, pull people down, bully and be unpleasent.
Perhaps I would come to Fuel a bit more and enjoy your DJing skills if people were a bit more friendly. Dumpseys might not be the best place in the world, in fact far from it, but the one thing it has head and shoulders above Fuel is friendly staff and DJ's.
I fully support gay marriage, but a shameful display of self interest commercialism I do not support. The same applies to Terry George of Fibre in Leeds.

richjob 07-12-2006, 02:21 PM you could be describing YORSELF in the above post, irony at its finest.
Eid Mubarak
Don't get me wrong I am not proud of some of my comments, but some of the staff who "work" at Fuel and some of the customers of Fuel are very rude and think it is funny to be nasty to people, as displayed time and time again on this thread and DJ Scotts comment to me. Bitching and name calling is nothing but bullying. I was simply making a comment on a subject I think is very important - Gay Marriage.
As a gay man I have waited for the day when gay couples could committ to each other and I do wish Carlton and Pete the best of luck, happiness and health but the flyers in my opinion water down the importance and significance of the occasssion.
Meaks 07-12-2006, 02:23 PM Is anything happening in The Mincers Lair on Sundays?

SpiderPete 07-12-2006, 06:34 PM I second that, having been on the receiving end of it before for no apparant reason - and having watched it on several occasions on this thread. In fact, I don't bother posting on here any more actually since the self appointed Fuel spokesperson started with the nastiness.
Yes I have been on the receiving end on this thread quite a few times, and I rarely post on here now, I certainly dont give my "opinions" anymore of either Fuel or Lions lair as I know it will result on another "bitchy nasty" replies.
Its kind of spoiled the thread when you can no longer give your "opinion" "good or bad" about the 2 venues without being personally attacked.
Yes I am sure they want to know the good points of both venues, but I am sure they need to know the "bad points" so they can either "do something about it" or "do nothing about it".
But thats now seemed to have gone, which is a great shame.
I will freely admit since the last personal attack from Fuel staff member (no its not u Scott) I havent been down, its just put me off for the moment. I go to other venues instead.

Yes I was wondering what everyone is doing over crimbo, maybe I might start a meet thread for Fuel, but not sure what night to use here.
How about 22nd Dec (Friday) or 23rd (Saturday), or are these too close to crimbo, thinking that Climax is the 16th and that Sat is out.
Its about time the gang got back together again and had a good night out........ :)
I certainly wont be posting any feeedback though.

SpiderPete 17-12-2006, 01:24 PM Any feedback on the renew membership website not working ?

One flyer says : £10 before 11pm, £15 after
Other flyer says : £10 AT 10pm, £15 after

Hi Pete, sorry for late reply, been mincing in town bogs. I'll ask some mincers in the office to investigate about the website. If anybody else has problems with it simply email philip@fuel-sheffield.co.uk with your name, address and birthdate. If you want to receive the various offers or promotional material electronically then please also send your email address and mobile phone number. Philip our PR guy will then sort it manually on the membership database for you.

It is silly to make comments like this to someone upset and angry by a vile and stupid homophobic attack. I typed in bold by error due to being angry and I am not stupid, jusy gay and proud.

lol. I am in fact aged somewhere between 38 and death. I remember the good old days of the Cossack, Albert, Queens Hotel, Bulldog, Manhatten Showbar, Cavallers, Rockies and The Club when Sheffield had a real gay scene.
As a mature gay man I will not lay down and let some arrogant brain dead moron insult my sexuality or that of my friends. Learn a little about your gay history, celebrate and respect it.
Lots of love.

There is a gay forum (cannot advertise it) where there is no homophobics about, and it keeps you upto date of whats happenin on the scene.

No, it is not silly.
We maintain and moderate well over 2000 posts a day on this Forum and if you wish to ensure that things get seen and acted on, it's better to report them through channels and give time to respond before you start threatening us with police action.

Oh yes i remember when you could visit bus terminals without someone catching you, I remember the days of under ground seedy car park butt clubs, bring back the good old days of erasure and gay repression, then there would be more cock and bum fun for me! Click the link for my view on old gays/days

Avalon 22-12-2006, 04:02 PM Back on topic, me and't other half visited Fuel the other night and were less than impressed. £5 for two pints that were clearly just coloured water, and the transvestite on the mixing desk was a bit over-keen on the fog machiene. Couldnt see my hand in front of my face. Had to leave early due to the fog.
Good songs being played though, and the door staff were very friendly.

Just a quickie to wish all and sundry (The current drag queens), at Fuel a very Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. I'll be abroad until early Jan doing a couple of big shows..!
I'm sorry that I didn't win the competition, but I'd practiced my dance routine for the BIG stage in the Main Room, and then found we had to squeeze into the tiny stairs/stage area next to the DJ in the Trash Lounge..! LOL!
Tyranna 23-12-2006, 05:36 PM Hi, there, Folks! A very Merry Xmas to all the crew at FUEL from Tyranna, who is currently in the marvellous GRUB cafe at 'The Other Place' LGBT Club in Cork in Ireland! They've got a great show on tonight with drag cabaret, just can't wait!!! The Other Place is a very popular venue, like the Lions Lair and Fuel rolled into one, plus a full LGBT community resource centre!
See you all again in January!!!
bensonhedges 01-01-2007, 05:47 PM We had an excellent time at Fuel last night - kick ass music, a fab and friendly crowd, well-priced champagne and a free cd at the end of it all. A big thanks and well done to Carlton and the team.
richjob 02-01-2007, 02:57 PM Hi,
Just wanted to say that myself and some friends went to Fuel on Christmas Eve and although it was a bit dead we had a really good night. Loved sitting on Grotty Santas knee (loved the horn) !!!
Started off the night in Lions Lair, good atmosphere, and Happy New Year to the cutie behind the bar that night.
Went to London for New Year, fab time. Can't decide whether to do Fuel or Climax for my birthday do on the 12 January ?

charliec 20-01-2007, 05:00 PM HiGuys&Gals
went to fuel last night had a great night! Afew things I'd like to get some feedback on though.....
I have got ask whats the point in having 2-rooms with so called different music policies if the djs are just going to play the same stuff?
We spent around 80% of our time in the Big room (on our right as we walked in) boogie-ing down to a very decent mix of todays as well as yesteryears pop and dance Music (The Dj guy was a bit too keen on using the smoke machine though!!! )!!! But we all enjoyed the atmosphere in here throughout the night Thanks x
In our group a couple of our friends enjoy Indie Music so were dead excited about what was apparently on offer in the other room (the side where the toilets are!!) Im also a fan of this other room normally (more intimate/cosy/easier to chat to your friends in) but really didn't like what was happening in here tonight... :gag:
The Dj (the so-called Indie Dj I gather) albeit a relatively decent Dj on the whole doesnt really seem to have the slightest idea of what Indie and Alternative music is.... :loopy: She was using the better quality sound system in this room to her advantage over the other room and played to name a few - Cascada Truly Madly Deeply, Pink U&Ur Hand, Scissor Sisters I Dont Feel like Dancing, Girls Aloud Something Kinda ooh, Madonna Hung Up, Booty Luv Boogie Tonight, Bodyrox Yeah Yeah........... I could go on all day!! - none of which my Indie buddies would ever dream of getting down to some head banging and crazy dancing on the Dancefloor to! The Drag queens were also in this side most of the night either congregated on the Dj podium or standing around doing nothing (what is their purpose in life??)
:loopy: :  I have got no idea what the politics are at Fuel at the moment, but it seemed that everything last night was geared to making the trash room the success of the night! The better quality Speaker System, The Higher number of Bar Staff, all the Drag Queens being in here all night, the Manager being in here all Night etc! are some reasons on which my judgement is made. We take our Hats off to the Hard working Friendly bar Staff in the Main room and the Dj guy too who even though was a bit too OTTwith his Smoke!!! together Created a fun atmosphere for all of us to enjoy, and by the looks of things we werent the only ones!  Thank You!x
Maybe others would like to comment on their findings of recent Fuel visits?!?
much love, Chaz xx

BTW, I've joined the Fuel mailing list as promised, but so far I've had no news at all of anything exciting coming up...
However, I'm not surprised that despite promises of Fuel opening for more days of the week after the New Year, it STILL seems to be only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays...:loopy:
