You can bet if they did, they would all be thin young lads to look at, and prolly cannot play football, eg = the bar staff, lol

Someone on Sheffield Uni LGB Committee was trying to put a gay student football team together a while ago, not sure if he had much success.

Anyway, I was at Fuel last night with some friends. It wasn't as busy as I would have liked, but the music was good :o).

The Roebuck looked a bit dodgy with the broken window behind us and the mouldy wall :gag:

Was a bit warm in fuEL and had to leave before I passed out, and was great to finally meet you Scott after all this time, hope it wont be the last ;) ...... well it wont as Viva Climax is fast approachin ........ soz won`t be out tonight (you already know lol) as I rarely do Saturdays.

Saucy Scott! Well plastic Glasses; I'm afraid that is down to health and safety. If you remember pre refurb the amount of broken glass that was everywhere, dance floor, steps, toilets, it was very dangerous. Being an old gay myself, I worry about the younger gays and if they cut their poor ickle, little fingers or better still slash their faces open and gash their necks. So plastic is the safest option, you may not like it but it is for your own good. Most clubs do them now. I was in the Leadmill (Liberace knows why as there was no mincing) and they have plastic glasses and they are the crappy soft ones at least ours are......Hard....mmmmm...Hard........I tell ya I wouldn't mind Scott Kelly ramming one of those hard plastic, pint glasses up me tight ring.

i think south yorkshire gays need a thread which deviates from Climax and Fuel.. im sure our little gay world does not center around Sheffield Scene. Im positive we can discuss other things. A place where we can mince free and bitch about others.

Any ideas what we can call the new thread?

well me and some freinds went to fuel last night and i have to say i was shocked by the service we received before even entering

we arrived at the front doors (no que btw) at 10.50pm thinking ohh we can get in for 4 quid

but ohhh noooo the door staff made us wait at the doors for ten mins meaning we got to the cashier at 11pm

and we were told it was now 6 quid instead

i know i know its only 2 quid and its not the money its the principle of how they did it

well i wasnt paying it as it was blatantly done deliberately to charge us more never have i had a bad word to say about fuel or the staff we usually recieve lovely service theres always a lot of smiley faces and generally a good enjoyable atmosphere but i have to say that fuel has totally let itself down now in my estimations

Yeh that has happened to me before, they make you wait there thinking it's busy inside and when they do eventually let you in at 11 there's a couple of people floating about in there.

There is no need to queue before 11. If it happens again to me i will refuse to pay the extra 2 pound.

Had a really good night on Friday DJ Scott, why is that i hardly ever have a good night like that at Climax?

Meaks
06-08-2006, 01:52 PM
What an absolute disgrace.

We were deliberately and blatantly held up for several minutes while the staff inside the door mumbled to each other. Upon finally entering (and receiving an 'apoloy' for keeping us waiting) I was asked for 6 pounds.
When asked why I was told because it was now after 11. I calmly explained we had been waiting for 10 minutes and that it wasn't quite 11 anyway, only to recieve the reply 'well its 11 o'clock on our cameras'.

As a regular customer I will not be treated like that, and this only shows me that Fuel are only interested in screwing as much money as they can out of their 'punters' to such a level that they would deliberately hold people up just so they could get a bit of extra cash.

We went to Dempsey's, paid three pound to get in, had some cheap beer, a good old mince and a wicked night (and spent all my money there instead of Fuel). :)

I doubt Fuel will receiving my custom again in the near future. Very dissapointed.

nobikejohn and myself could only make the pre-drinks meet prior to Fuel last night. Seems a good job that we didn't arrange to meet up in Fuel though - as there appears to have been a general boycott taking place due to the two quid increase in admission prices at 23.00hrs.

Sounds like its about time dannyfuel showed his face on here again with a good explanation of these ahem, allegedly cowboy tactics, yes?

I have sent him a email.

Well .......... where do I start, the evening went well, we met in Roebuck Tavern and Katy_1981 met some dodgy men, :o , then we minced down to Red Lion and enjoyed the chatting and bitching, then it went a bit wrong.

Arrived at Fuel doors as we do, at the normal time of 10.50, for some bizarre reason we were made to wait, there was no one at the cashiers and it wasnt that busy inside, as I could see through the doors as I saw DannyFuel open it, we waited and waited and waited ............. and waited, and waited ...... waited ...... well you get the picture.

The bouncer was, on purpose, keeping us waiting, he kept looking at his watch, and obviously he was waiting for 11pm to arrive, so he could charge us more, we waited ........... and waited, then the apology "sorry for the delay", then the bombshell ............... its £6 now :o , we were made to wait 10 mins ........... what a disgrace, we obviously didn`t stay. If thats the way Fuel are going to treat their paying customers, then this paying customer will take y money somewhere else.

So we all went down to Dempseys, arrived after 11pm, and paid ONLY £3, it would have been cheaper but I left my membership card at home, as usual the bouncers and cassier and bar staff were friendly, didnt keep us waiting, we went straight in. Must say I had a wicked time there, had a mince on the dancfloor and I see the cage came back, cheap drinks as well.

But Fuel ............ what have you done, it was a bloody disgrace how were were made to wait 10 mins so you could charge us more .......... I was soooooo bloody annoyed ............ I think I have recovered now.

Dempseys here I come, cause Fuel is certainly not getting my money ever again.

Well, I was really annoyed about last night and said so politely to the doorman, who, in fairness seems a really nice fella.

What got me wondering was what was in it for the doorman? Surely he doesn't get a cut of what is taken on the door?

The only explanation for me is that the club management have instructed them to keep people waiting; it was so blatantly done on purpose it's the only explanation I can think of.

Anyways, they didn't get my money last night. Neither did the Lion's Lair this afternoon (we go there nearly every Sunday for a few cocktails). I'm not naive enough to think they missed my cash last night, but if they continue like this they might start to see a dint in their profits.

Finally to quote several of Fuel's values from their website:

to be more than a business

to strive to continually better ourselves

to continually improve what we do

to treat everybody in a decent and fair manner

I feel very let down.

Danny, we would welcome your comments.

nobikejohn and myself could only make the pre-drinks meet prior to Fuel last night. Seems a good job that we didn't arrange to meet up in Fuel though - as there appears to have been a general boycott taking place due to the two quid increase in admission prices at 23.00hrs.

Hi dear, I have text danny, and told him if he gets a chance to have a nosey at the forum...

Im sure there will have been a reason for delaying entry on sat night... as we are all aware fuel have changed things at the suggestion of this forum in the past... so i dont think they would intentionally snub the very same people...

however, i was oblivious to everything on saturday night, i kept hearing people ask me to play songs, then wen i turned around no one was there...

Thank you all for your comments.

Firstly, there is categorically no policy of making people wait until after the price goes up. Our policy is supposed to be that at 11pm, a line is drawn in the queue - and those who were waiting prior to 11pm should be charged at the pre-11pm price.

All members of the door team and the local management at the venue have been reminded of this, and if any of you have any further issues regarding this, please write to me directly at danny@fuel-hull.co.uk, in order that I can take this matter up directly with the personnel concerned.

I have absolutely no idea why you were kept waiting :loopy: - when I entered fuel, it didn't seem like there was any reason that you should have been delayed. I will be making further investigations into this matter, and will try to ensure that delays in the queue do not occur. From my own experience, it is rare for there to be long delays - we aim to get people in as fast as we can.

Let me assure you once again that no policy has been laid down by any of the senior management team at fuel to rip you off.

In fact, let me tell you what we are doing over the next few weeks to actually show you that we are not going to rip you off.....

Firstly, our draught prices will all be reduced by 25p per pint.

Secondly, our Friday and Saturday door prices are being slashed accross the board to £2.50 b4 11pm and £5 after on BOTH nights.

Thirdly, before midnight at weekends all house spirits and some selected bottles will be just £1. At all other times, don't forget our usual offers of house doubles for £2.50, Vodka NRG for £2.50, and selected bottles at just £1.50!

For those of you who were directly affected by Saturday Night's debacle, please email me and I will ensure you receive free entry on your next visit, by way of an apology.

I would like to take this opportunity to second what Danny has said. My name's Stewie and I am the manager of Fuel Sheffield. Unfortunately I was away on the night in question and was unhappy to say the least upon hearing of this incident. I do not instruct staff to cause delays ensuring they pay a higher entrance price, and have taken this matter very seriously. I cannot stress how sorry I am, and will fully investigate into what has happened.

Despite not posting on here before, I regularly read these forums and take all customer feedback very seriously. If you do have something to say about fuel, please continue to post on here and I will get the message, alternatively you can always email Danny above or me directly at Stewie@fuel-sheffield.co.uk. I would also encourage you to speak to me in person whilst you are at the club, and cannot stress how importantly I value the opinion of you guys.

I hope to see some of you at Fuel Sheffield very shortly

Actually what am I saying; the Duff is too credible to be classed as cheesy.

I imagine she's more suited to Indie night. Songs such as 'So Yesterday' and 'Beat of My Heart' deal with issues that affect young people such as unrequited love and drug abuse.

She doesn't need promotion:

Arguably the only teen pop star with the potential to rival or surpass the popularity of Britney Spears -- albeit with a very different approach --

Hilary Duff made a name for herself on the enormously successful Disney Channel/ABC Kids show Lizzie McGuire, which she parlayed into careers as a pop singer and film actress.

Yes this all came about because of the forum but what other way are they going to be able to listen to their customers? What other club would do this and give responses such as Danny has? Do you think Kingdom and Gatecrasher would reply and listen to their customers? No! They would not give a hoot! It's because we are a community and I'm sure Danny cares about it and I bet he feels let down by the amount of moaning we all give about Fuel. This one mistake/mix up (all be it over £2 how petty) has been blown out of proportion.

That does seem a really nasty tactic and is guaranteed to p*** people off - wonder if other clubs do it too ... seems it would make more sense to charge a lower constant amount all through the evening and night say from 9m e.g. 3 pounds - that way no delays, an even flow of people and no-one is p***ed off - funny how greed often ruins successful ventures in the end ....

why do they start charging more..after a certain time.. Surely people getting in earlier are getting more for money.. and paying less for it. I just dont understand why they knock the up price after 10-11 pm .. id prefer to give the door man a glance of my privates parts than pay the higher price.

Yeah and your point is? They are lowering the door price and drinks prices. So you were made to wait and lost £2 big deal, GET A LIFE. People are dying in Iraq, famine in ethopia, AIDS crisis globally. See the bigger picture for gods sake, put some of your enthusiasm to gripe and winge into a topic that actual could benefit people and society. I VERY much doubt you post on political forums about the state of the goverment or how first time buyers simply cant afford houses, or post on PETA website and complain that Proctor and Gamble are still testing their products on Animals. Use the internet to fight and complain about REAL issues. You lot come on here moaning about waiting in a queue and paying over £2 and all the other compliants you have gone on about. Well, Plethora, you're not exactly one to follow your own advice - which you so freely dished out to my mate SpiderPete.

So far on SF you've managed 6 posts. I had a look at the "real things" you cared about so much .....like -

"People are dying in Iraq"
"famine in ethopia"
"AIDS crisis globally"

The number of your posts on these "real things" = 0

I also had a look at your posts on the "bigger picture", such as

"the state of the government"
"how first time buyers simply cant afford houses"
"Proctor and Gamble are still testing their products on Animals"

and your number of posts = 0 :surprised

But, guess what? Although you were "disgusted in the lot of you" for allegedly being "so banal and petty", and even though you doubted "you even care about real things" and accused folk of being "locked in your closeted little gay worlds" ..... guess what?

All your six posts on SF have been limited to ......"Climax Vs Fuel - Which do you prefer?" (2 posts) and "The Fuel Gay Nightclub Megathread." (4 posts). Err, for some reason, your accusation of being "locked in your closeted little gay worlds" seems to apply more to you than anyone else.

Both SpiderPete and myself regularly contribute to the BNP Mega-thread Debate No 3.... why haven't you? Oh, silly me, I already know the answer of course - you're stuck in your own little closted gay world on SF, limiting your entire posts to the Climax v Fuel & Fuel Megathread discussions.

Put away your holier than thou halo, and have a good look at your own closeted little gay world Plethora. When you've posted on the serious subjects that some of us have, I might respect you a little. And until you do that, you have no grounds to lecture any of us. :nono:

Crikey, now we're getting a guided tour of Dempeys!

I seem to have more chats in there with bar staff/door men/and people in general who seem to be so much friendlier.

Who's the new crush SpiderPete? What's his name?

Oops better stop before I get labelled "dempsey queen" lol. I am gonna end up in there tomorrow night after midnight, should be interesting to see how many is in...

This is the Fuel Megathread, not the Dempseys' thread! Are you on commission? :suspect:

demo.. i just commented on the fact that it was nice of fuel to come along and defend themselves.. plus to offer people compensation for making customers unhappy... i dont see anything negative about that at all.. I still think Fuel listen to their customers and care enough to make personal comments on the forum.

Well done fuel.. im still waiting for my private PM ..with offers of freeness

they care enough about their profits and nothing else hence the price rises etc obviously that has started to backfire and fuel hasn't been too busy and suddenly prices slashed!

They've only made comments here to try and win people back round and fair play to them for that.

I'm not stupid enough to believe they care about the gay communtiy because they don't they like any other business are here for profit. If they cared they wouldn't have tried to take customers away from climax for however long they had PA's etc on climax nights

Laa_86 - Go any night!!! Thursdays are cool if you don't have to be up the next morning as drinks are £1.50 all night and it's only £3 to get in.

I went last night and had an amazing time as always. There were some excellent bassline tracks being played in the main room... anyone who was there and can remember the tracks that were being played with the bassline, please let me know.. I was a little tipsy and can't remember what I was dancing to, apart from "Do I Look Like a Slut" and Prodigy "No Good" (it was an excellent mix!!). x x x

Just wanted to drop a word of praise Fuels way - we were there last night and I got served the warmest pint of lager imaginable from the bar nearest the cloakroom. It was changed immediately with very good grace and one of the managers (white shirt - don't know his name) said he would sort the problem out. I know this is the least that could be expected but I just wanted to say thank you anyway. Also gotta mention Vanity Case, who played all of our requests - the music was storming all night. Cheers love!!

On the other side of the coin though, twice when we ordered drinks there was no ice, and those plastic pint pots don't exactly add to the quality feel of the venue.

I agree with Gayham. I wish people would stop complaining about the plastic glasses. Maybe they don't have the more 'refined' feel of a glass glass however they do prevent broken glass being left around the venue and people hurting themselves. Surely that's not something to moan about..:D

I definately think Saturday night is the best (and busiest) night for Fuel. I didnt think I would hear myself saying this but I prefer the small room for the pop music. It seems more intimate and just somehow better when busy. I don't know what its like on a Thursday.

I've noticed the absence of the drag queens quite a lot as well. Maybe they have all left or decided to work more hours at the Hull Fuel.

I don't know if anyone else attended Fuels Birthday Giveaway debarcle last night but it was ridiculous. Sounded great - Free entry and £1 drinks all night - where's the catch ? The catch was we turned up to discover the cloakroom was closed so we had the choice of sweating away with our jackets one or leaving them in a pile in the corner and hoping they didnt get nicked. There was only one bar open although many people had chosen to move to the small room with no bar or music to escape the mass over crowding in the main room. We had to queue sardine style for over 20 minutes to be served at the bar and then had to opt for bottles rather than pints as there was no way we would be able to squeeze back through the crush pint in hand. We stayed for one drink then promptly left, some to xes and others who just gave up on the night entirley and went home. We had been in Dempseys earlier in the evening and it was the general consensus that we should have just stayed there and not bothered with Fuel at all. The other people we spoke to were equally unimpressed. I have to say I don't go to Fuel very often but last night has not exactly encouraged me to return in a hurry.

im sorry u feel this way about ur visit to fuel last night..

i can only speak for the hundreds of happy customers i could see from the dj box, who all seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere of the night.. and yes, only one bar may have been open, but there were sufficient staff on there to cater for the customers surely?

Surely there were not enough bar staff - it was reminiscent of a New Years Eve bar at 11.55pm - 4 deep at one point! Also the "All drinks for a pound except champagne and absinthe" offer wasn't quite that. Our normal round of Grolsch and a Malibu and coke was all at full price. We ended up on Carling and Smirnoff Ice - ok a cheap drink is a cheap drink, and we did have an excellent time (and the music was spot-on, cheers Scott) but once again Fuel is leaving a vaguely nasty taste in the mouths of some.

With regard to the number of staff, you can stick as many people behind the bar as you like but as there's only two tills there comes a point when the wait to be served would be the same as the wait for change from the tills.

Anyone that has ever been on a normal Sunday knows there aren't usually more than 15 people in the whole night. We did the best we could given the circumstances.

Oh my god. This is another prime example of finding something to moan about. Will you people ever be content?

I doubt you would have found many places open on bank holiday sunday who served a pint of carling or a vodka and mixer for quid. I also stress you would not have found any other gay place in Sheffield serving those prices.

Can i also point out that however cheap it is to get into Dempseys, you DO pay the same prices for drinks which are sometimes more expensive than fuel drinks. I can say with my hand on my heart I have never paid less for a drink in Dempseys that I have at Fuel.

In regards to the jackets, yes maybe there should have been a cloackroom open but you can ask the barstaff to take the coats. Also what's wrong with tying them round your waist? Lets not be fashion queens here girls...

The queues at the bar you experienced were exactly like the ones you expect to find at many clubs in Sheffield (Kingdom, Gatecrasher, Leadmill) EVERY weekend. So you should thank your bottom dollar Fuel isn't like that all the time.

There was no 'catch' to the evening. To put it simply lots of people turned up to take advantage of dirt cheap bank holiday alcohol and free entry. WHAT MORE would you like? Would you like to be paid to come out and drink?

As I pointed out in my previous post - I was actually unable to buy a pint as there was no way I could squeeze throught the crush pint in hand.

I was wearing a full length fur coat - so tying it round my waist was not really an option.

I do also drink at Leadmill and Gatecrasher and although on busy nights there has been a bit of a queue at the bar I have never experienced a night like Sunday.

My complaint was that there was a choice of one room which was packed like sardines or an empty room with no bar or music. Personally I would have rather paid normal price for my drinks and had a second bar open, a cloakroom, a couple more staff etc. As I said I was not the only one to feel like this and spoke to a number of people who left.

With regard to the number of staff, you can stick as many people behind the bar as you like but as there's only two tills there comes a point when the wait to be served would be the same as the wait for change from the tills.

Opening the other room would have made a big difference.

Anyone that has ever been on a normal Sunday knows there aren't usually more than 15 people in the whole night. We did the best we could given the circumstances.

I have no complaint with the staff who worked that night - they did do their best given the circumstances. I think the night was simply mismanaged / badly planned. You may normally only get 15 people in on a Sunday, but the fact that it is a Bank Holiday means it will be busier, before you even think about the fact that theres free entry and £1 drinks.

I dont have any complaint with Fuel in general - although I dont go very often on the previous occasions that I have been it has always been a good night - I just think they messed up sunday. Hopefully for Fuels sake the majority of the people there will have necked enough cheap drinks to have woken up with a sore head on monday remembering little of the evening.

Given that we got through all of the pint glasses on all the bars, and then had to open the spare boxes suggests that you were pretty much alone with that issue.

Kingdom is like that on a Wednesday when I go out there, I can also recall spending the best part of an hour queuing on a Monday night in Gatecrasher at the bar. Queues are inevitable, with that many people there would have been people moaning about it whether there was three bars open or not.

This is odd since its always been cheaper (until recently maybe). Guess it must depend what you're drinking.

And alone in not having half of my pint spilt down the front of myself . . .

For the number of people that were in Fuel that night it would have been much more enjoyable, comfortable etc if both bars were open. I have been to nights at gatecrasher, leadmill etc were there have been queues at the bar but all bars have been open. The frustrating thing at Fuel that night was the fact that there was a huge crush at one bar with a closed bar in the next room.

Like I say I have nothing against Fuel in general, simply that on that night it was mismanaged and they got it wrong.

So once again Fuel's knocking it out on the cheap. Just got in - one bar completely closed, no cloakroom (ok it's summer but still...), no go-go boys, one very tired, ****** off looking tranny, same old same old drinks promotions (who the **** drinks fosters?) C'mon guys where's the heart and soul that you promised us only one year ago? Dannyfuel you have been strangely silent on these forums for a long time now - sitting in your tower counting your $$$ or what?

Nicely put dear!

Sounds like I missed out on nothing then.
Is it falling apart?

I could have gone to Dempsey's but the compulsion to stick pins in my eyes changed my mind... ;)

Yes, you say it all.

I will like to know why Fuel has not even "bothered" to join in Sheffield`s gay week in October ?

Oh apparently, they decided to "not to bother", so much for wanting to join in the gay community in Sheffield.

Its a good job the oher gay venues in Sheffield have joind in : Xes and Dempseys.
