I agree about the Lesbian night - i have to say i'm sick of lesbians in clubs and would love a night where it was gay men only! And yes having that particular night on the Sunday before bank hol is just stupid. I'm not that bothered anyway 'cos ill be off to the court yard party in Leeds where i'll be guaranteed a fab time!

there was one time where i was singing the praises of Fuel etc but i have lost it now. Might pop along to the Nocturnal nights though after climax etc.

Dear Malecat

As one of the senior management team at fuel, I thank you for your comments and I do take all constructive criticism on board and in the manner it is intended – so, again, I am grateful for what you say.

Fuel does not discriminate against men or women in the general weekly offering it provides.

Fuel is currently open on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and is open to all – on an attitude-free basis.

We received a lot of feedback from the girls, asking if we would offer a women’s night (we’re talking about 200+ requests here). We had a trial run – and the feedback from that was also very good. So, we have agreed to hold this event regularly on a ONCE A MONTH basis, on a night where fuel would normally be closed (Sundays).

In other words, we have not reduced the offering to men – or excluded men from a night which would normally be open to all.

As with most things in life, everything happens in stages – not all at the same time. Whilst we were planning to hold back the announcement of a night for men until the next newsletter, I am happy to confirm that there will be one. So keep your eyes peeled…… In the mean time, for the guys, we do have the Sheffield heat of Mr Gay UK coming up on 27th May…..

To address some other points you have raised :

We have addressed the issue of the mirrors in the toilets in a previous post on here – I won’t deny that they were initially designed as a “cheeky” and “fun” feature, but the decorative finish at the base of them does still provide sufficient privacy – I have personally never seen anyone else’s bits in the mirrors! ;)

We do have an entertainments team, mainly consisting of drag queens – who do a brilliant job for us. I am quite sure they are not to everyone’s taste – but they certainly provide additional colour and atmosphere within the venue.

I take on board your comments about music. I will discuss them with my team, and take action as necessary. Our DJs do have a wide selection of music – modern and older - the only thing we tend to steer clear of is some of the male R&B, which we find often degrades the party atmosphere. We try to provide a balance, so that we can appeal to the broadest range of customers possible – Fridays is Indie in one room, Pop in the other (there is some overlap, I do appreciate that and will do my utmost to rectify this). Saturdays is more dance oriented in the main room, with pop and cheese in the Trash Palace. Obviously, on quieter nights like Monday and Thursday, numbers attending mean that only one room of music is provided. All of this is under constant review, and if anyone has any specific comments, please feel free to contact me. My email is at the base of this post.

Climax – we accept that Climax is a very popular night in Sheffield and we accepted a lot of criticism thrown at us on Sheffield Forum that by putting big acts and entertainment on the same night as Climax, we were “splitting the scene”. So we stripped it down to a Climax alternative – in good faith and in response to many of the criticisms thrown at us. It’s a cheap night for the customers, as an alternative for those who don’t like or fancy Climax. Going forward we will be offering an afterparty on the same nights as Climax, which will be held at fuel. We’d love to see you there.

I have not attended Climax for nearly 3 years personally, and neither have any of the senior management team, so I am not sure what you mean when you say we have “given up on [the night at fuel] and are attending [climax]”. I also haven’t been to Manchester for some considerable time, so your money has not been paying for that – rest assured!

I reiterate our earlier posts about attempting to work with other venues and nights on the scene. We did attempt it, but there was a lack of response from other venues at the time (with the exception of XES, I should add).

I will request that my team contact Exposed Magazine to correct any errors regarding pricing. That publication is out of my direct control, I am afraid. As far as I am aware, other than on Climax Night or nights when we have additional entertainment booked such as PAs, our door prices are the same every week. I will ensure that any disparities are ironed out, if they exist. Like most clubs, we do have different prices on different nights of the week, and at different times of the night – perhaps that is where the confusion lies?

In conclusion, I am listening to what you are saying and I will do what I can to change anything that is wrong. The biggest problem we face is that you just can’t please all of the people, all of the time. We’re doing our best to at least please most of the people, as much of the time as is humanly possible! I apologise if it is not to your liking. Send me feedback, and I will always take this into consideration!

Can I ask that anyone who wishes to respond to me directly, does so at chris.fuel@fuelclubsuk.com, as I do not get a chance to review Sheffield Forum on a regular basis.

Best Regards

Fuel

Chris,

Thank you for such a mature and dignified response. I use to go to Fuel and loved it, but I no longer go. I am a man of mature years and have been out on the scene in Sheffield for nearly 23 years and have seen bars/clubs come and go, some quicker than others. I agree it is very difficult to please all the people all the time. I think people have to acknowledge that Fuel is not the busiest place for the 4th largest city in the UK, why ? For me, I feel uncomfortable in Fuel, too many women, too many bitchy young lads, and too many straights, but that is my own personal opinion (or problem some might say) !! The men only night sounds great and I would try it. The drag queens in Fuel are colourful and give out some good banter and I think the DJ's work hard (again it's hard to please all the people), the music is good but I really don't want to watch some skinny lad dancing in a cage or whatever it is, in a thong, giving out attitude. Respect to Fuel for trying but I think you need to represent a more diverse image of LGB people in Sheffield. x x

Tyranna

I would argue greatly with Richen04 in that there are 'too many straights' in Fuel!!! As far as I can recall, on every night (with one notable exception) pretty every bloke I have seen in the place (And that includes the staff) look as Gay as F***! The 'notable exception' was when I was at the private party thrown for Dawn (Happy 40th!) when family and friends of staff came down for a very enjoyable night with a more 'Mainstream' atmosphere!

As Sheffield's best known (And hardest working) Drag Queen, I'll of course be down at Fuel on the 17th of May to do my best at DRAG CLASH!!! Here's hoping my many fans will be there to support me this time (Unlike last time when many of them bummed off to Manchester on a long-planned evening trip...)

I think the point of this is being lost.

A large number of people who I know and including myself no longer go to Fuel. My main gripe is customer service. It is somewhat poor to put it mildly. I don't like the miserable bar staff, the attitude of some of the junior members of the 'entertainment' team and I have also been in contact with some unpleasant customers, their sexuality is irrelevant to me.

I would suggest that it may be an idea to advise the younger members of the Fuel Crew that not all people over the age of 25 fancy them, some of us like people who are passed puberty and teenage years, want to dine elsewhere than McDonalds and look like they are not likely to be blown away at the slightest gust of wind!

Great to be back in Sheffield on Saturday and see one or two familiar faces in Fuel, although it did seem massively quiet since the last time I was in properly which was before I went away a year ago! Still managed to have a good night though.

Liked Nocturnal and it made a nice change from having to go to XS if you still want to party on, although one small thing.... why is there no non alcholic alternative with the free drink?? I was told I could only have the alcho-pop....can't say I was too fussed as I only paid £2 in, but still not all of us are drinkers???

Oh and anyone know if Fuel still send out the newsletters? Haven't recieved one in ages! Still get the emails though.

Be fair Philip - whilst the Auntie Brenda character may have come across as funny to most people, it was a bit too close to the bone given the fact that you had used your own Aunt as the character. It was the resemblance to, and some of the crass/borderline disgusting things that you had Auntie Brenda doing., that appalled and disgusted the family. You know that I know her, as do most of the gay men that know Ian (her son). Maybe Bo Selecta can get away with but there are some things that are just going too far. Other than this statement, I do think you're quite funny and like to see you perform

You would not believe me and Gayham does not do drag! Gayham wears his own clothes, he's not a drag artist!

Sorry, Gayham, but I thought 'drag' is also used as a 'catch-all' term meaning any kind of fancy dress /crazy outfit as worn by us performing artists/ dressers up!

BTW, i'm at THE OTHER PLACE Gay resource centre in Cork, Ireland, where I have been enjoying myself at Cork Gay Pride. If Cork can get its act together, then why not Sheffield?

Also, we need a Gay venue with free Internet available, as at The Other Place -I'm using it now-.

Could Fuel/Lions Lair install a few computers? I know of a voluntary group which donates computers for community-related initiatives such as LGBT services.

Erm I dont think you can have a say really as you do not know this situation in its entirety . Also that character encompassed MANY characteristics from MANY people I know it was not soley based on her, it, in all fairness it is nothing like her, basing a character on someone encompases many characterisitcs that come from many areas of people idiosyncrasies. Do you not think Gayham is based on half of the gay men I know?? It is a characteur, exagerated and cartoonish. Plus I dont know who you are and I'm not bringing this up again, it would have never been accepted by a court of law as a case and I have gone through all the proper legal channels regarding it so case closed. Keep you nose out thankyou very much.

Last time I went to Fuel, there was a controlled taxi rank outside the club, run by/sponsored by Sheffield City Council and should have had attendants on duty. The incident should have been reported to them or the council, Fuel can not be held resonsible for what happens on a public highway.

I am absolutely sick to death of people comparing Sheffield to places like Manchester and London, I see the usual people who compare us to those places never mention things like : comparing Sheffield to places like Doncaster or Rotherham which are local places.

No wonder people are not interested in Sheffield, some of the gay people dont even support Sheffield and instead slag it off although they dont even go to the scene here, and it wont grow while they continually "bitch" on here.

Try supporting it for once.

Just because someonone doesn't go out on the scene on a daily basis does not make them some sort of gay social pariah (excuse my spelling)

People compare sheffields scene with that of places like leeds etc as they are places of a similar size. You cannot compare Sheffield and Rotherham as the latter is pretty much a suburb of Sheffield (the town centre pracitcally doesn't exist)

The scene in Sheffield will never grow while it's full of vile little queens who have nothing better to do than bitch about others instead of just going out and having a good time.

I supported it for years when the Cossack was open, I'd drink there now if it still was, in fact I think it still would be open if it haden't been gayed-up like it was at the end.

I don't see the need to go somewhere I don't realy like just to support the gay "community".

If a normal pub that just happened to be gay opened, preferably with a pool table, I'd be straight (so to speak) in there.

Cheeky!

There were dozens of us at one point on the top floor of the multi-storey car-park above Fuel, getting a grandstand view of the fire, but when the smoke started blowing towards us, I appeared to be the only one who did the sensible thing and retreated downstairs again; shortly afterwards, the car-park security personnel ushered everyone out for their own safety.

Any of you other FUEL regulars and assorted Tia-Anna fans out there who will be heading for London for Pride tomorrow?

I've booked a ticket on the 5.24 Train from Sheffield -the trains seem to be running near to normal schedule to London-, and I've just posted a short message from the London Pride Website re. the security alert in London today, for your information:

Suspicious Device In Central London
The Metropolitan Police are working hard to reopen central London as soon as they can, following the suspicious device being found in Haymarket. We hope that this will not have an impact on tomorrow’s event.

It is not though that the device had anything to do with our event, or Canada Day which takes place today in Trafalgar Square. Extra security precautions, such as the removal of rubbish bins, are being put in place to make Pride London 07 as safe as possible.

The parade assembles in Baker Street from 11am and heads-off down Oxford Street at 1pm.:|

Good question when I went (for the first time in ages I should point out) it cost me £6.

£6 and there wasn't even an "act" on.
What is the £6 for? the pleasure of sticking to the carpet
while we are on the subject like normal the trash palace that plays POP was much busier(I use the term busier loosly)while the funky house room was like a grave yard it was a bit embarassing.I just dont get why they just dont swap the rooms. They must be loosing money hence £6.
Still at least I didnt have to dodge all the cigarettes, they were all stood outside! in the rain!! ha

Lets hope they make more of an effort than the current place, its gone so down hill its diabolical. Dont know where the new place is though, bet it's CRASH on Wellington Street next to DQ bar. How though? all the decent staff have gone! There are hardly any entertainers and the current managment team are rubbish, they dont give the place the atmosphere in needs and are rude. I hear they are opening a new venue in three months time and all the main managment team (that guy from that BBC Wedding Stories programme) are moving back over from Hull to 'sort it out'. Hillarious, cant wait to go to see what it is like..! I wonder if they will get a new bar too? Lions Lair is too small I always feel squashed when I go in there...!

A trip has been organised to travel from Sheffield to Manchester by coach. This will be LBGT people only.

The date is Saturday 28 July at 8.45pm and leave Manchester at 3.30am.

REMEMBER: There is no train or coaches available on a Sunday morning to get back so this is a unique opportunity.

The price is £16 per person.

Limited Places.

PM Me for more information.

OH MY GOD both the train and National Express Coach fares are CHEAPER!!! and BOTH National Express and Transpennine Express DO run services from Manchester to Sheffield on SUNDAY MORNINGS.

Why are you telling these lies ?

It does not take a genious to work out what is happening. Sheffield has been a total and utter disaster. Too big on both the club size and the attitude. No amount of venue changes will make any difference to that.

They are just full of spin, the latest refurb the Fuel, Hull costing 500k! What a joke, you could knock the building down and put it back up for that and have change. It's all back to Hull and Sheffield will be left to slowly go down the pan just like Hull was before they came here.

OH MY GOD the train is CHEAPER!!!

The coach company i booked wont go down on price, the train is £15.50 so it is 50p more for the coach. Also you would know that there is no trains on a sunday morning from manchester until around 7.30 am.

I am making no money whatsoever on this.

What a negative attutude for someone who is supposed to be a pillar in the gay community.

If you didnt have a good comment to make then dont bitch! Anythin positive in the gay community would be a good thing, shame you only see the negatives.

Excuse me? My comment was not intended as bitchy at all. it just seems a bit ridiculous to be expected to fork out such a high amount for your coach... and for such tightly restricted travel to and from Manchester.

May I ask how many places are available on your coach?

I reiterate again, I am making NO PROFIT on this trip, so i am not going to justify the price again. Some would say that paying upwards of £5 to get into climax is expensive, but then again i dont go there as it is not that good hence the trip to manc!

I am trying to do something for the gay community and all im getting is negativity and poison from individuals like yourself.

First I apologise to all the people on the forum that this was never my intention, I wanted to make a couple of posts advertising the night out.

If my comment came across as bitchy I apologise, but i feel i shouldnt have to justify something that i am trying to do for the community, from your tones it seems as if you are being very negative and attacking towards me and the coach idea. And also to be swore at is not justifiable and insulting.

The coach is 16 seater and price is non negotiable. I am making no profit whatsoever on this, please try and understand this.

Also what do you mean about the timeframe, do you expect the driver to pick people up every hour from either destination? I asked many people about what times they thought was a good time and they said around the times i have advertised. Also this gives people the maximum time in manchester.

Why are you trying to turn this trip into a negative and hostile situation, i thought i was doing something good for the gay community, what is everybodys view on this?

Why am i under attack?

PS. Let it be known that if this carries on then I will be making a full and formal complaint to the sheffield union (as your employers), you are supposed to be a representitive of the LGBT of the university.

when you offer to provide a service, and publicise it on a public forum, you should be ready and willing to answer any questions relating to it.

the market today is very competitive - £16 for a seat on a small coach is a high amount to pay, when - the train is cheaper.

personally, im finding it difficult to interpret the facts of this situation..

1. why are you discriminating on grounds of sexuality, over who is permitted to travel on your coach? when you are happy to make maximum use of a public forum to generate interest?

2. why are you not on this public forum under your real name? instead opting to call yourself after a street in manchester? WHEN you are expecting people to take you seriously, and put their trust in you?

3. why couldnt you respond to djscottk in a decent and less hostile manner when he clearly explained he wasnt being bitchy, and asked you how many seats were available on your vehicle?

4. why instead did you respond in a confrontational manner, not only with a bitchy, irrelevant comment about climax, but with a personal insult to djscottk?

to summarise - personally, i wouldnt go near you with a bargepole. from your postings on here you do not come across as a likeable individual, whom i would trust with £16 of my hard earned money, nor with arranging my safe passage to and from manchester.

hi meaks , id like to respond with this statement , im not here to bitch and unsupport , merly to have a general overview , to comment on what i see and hear , to put right what i see wrote wrong AND unfair .
Regarding the last post , i was merly stating what i've seen throughout this threat , a strong line of negativity !
Shouldn't we be talking about how to make our scene better so we can one day be proud of it ?

How many club's/night's have been and gone in sheffield in the last 10/15 yrs ?
i've heard of lots compared to leeds , their's its a lot more stable and supported , so what does this say about us ??
I mean were not a small city at all ,we have more than enough gay people to support a vibrant gay community .
BUT in truth sheffield gay folk dont support , so unless we change ,the future is not good :(

This is not a bitch its a wakeup call people !!!

One last thought , if people know how to have a good time ,why do they come on here on the monday and have a bitch about it ?cant have had as good a time as you say your capable of having hmmmm :suspect:

i've not been in sheffield long and already im underwelmed by such negativity both out there in the club's and on here with the forum .

Well what can I say! And I am sorry to coninue all the nastyness regarding the Sheffield Gay Scene but we have done it again............Closed down another club. Yes I agree places like Leeds and Manchester are good, but they do not have the community spirit that Sheffield has, you cant go to these places and know everyone there or just have a laugh because of all the stuck up people there. All of these places that have closed since I have lived in Sheffield is discusting. A big company was willing to come in and try to change the way Sheffield thought, but as a non-loyal community we stayed away in numbers choosing the bright lights and mardy attitudes. We should be assamed, as residents of the 5th biggest city in the UK we are managing to destroy what ever we are given, its no wonder people have an attitude towards gay people the way Sheffield has because we are not showing ourselves in town and not making our presence felt. Lets face facts, Sheffield and some of the gay people in and around the city dont deserve anything because its not going to be supported. Sad to say Chesterfield has a better gay scene, even Wakefield.

Lets just go back to the old days and hide away in all the "straight" bars and not be seen or heard. For me it is not a good day, yes it was tacky, yes it was dirty but that was part of the charm, thats what makes it Sheffield. Lets hope places like Dempseys now flurish and work together with Lions Lair to bring it all back. Where are all the people who go to Climax? My advice...............get to Lions, get to Dempseys and BE LOYAL!

So much for loyalty !

If a big company like Fuel cannot take the kind of losses that they have been in Sheffield, how could a couple of private individuals manage (I know of 2 people who are considering opening a similar kind of venue)

Sounds like a bad idea to me ....

If this is true it is a sad thing. This is the place when I went out (which is far and few between these days) I would go here. But who can blame them in the next few years they know that will be ripped down as part of the moor developments.
Will be interesting what happens in next few years with gay bars / clubs in Sheffield with Lions, Dempseys and Fuel all due to be bulldozed at some stage. Be nice if Sheffield council built ew bar area alll together and ask gay friendly companies first refusal...
But on going in straight bars, I hope there is a day when no gay bars exist because people won't be bothered about sexuality, but maybe badges saying straight, gay, bi, open minded might be needed for pulling purposes :D

Oh not rumours dear heard from horses mouth (well staff horse)

I have to disagree with some comments though...the gays didnt close it down, it was a managment decision that had been lingering in the air for somtime...Yes it is sad as it was so great and new in the begining but I have to say it was not the fault of the gays not supporting it. Towards the end the management really didnt care about the venue, they were (and always have been) only bothered about Hull. Therefore Sheffield didnt get the attention it deserved, if it had maybe people would feel differently about the club. It was always a branch of the Fuel Hull and a somewhat black sheep of the family.

Maybe they will reopen somewhere else, maybe they wont. If they do, I hope they put more effort in and sustain that effort and actually care about the place and the custom in brings in.

The End Of An Era For Fuel

After opening her doors two years ago Fuel Sheffield on Eyre Street has become a Mecca for fun loving party people.

The team at Fuel have attempted to create a high class club, but has had to juggle the investment they are prepared to make in the building which is earmarked for demolition under the Sheffield City Centre Masterplan, where many other tenants such as McDonalds have decided to close their operations. This, coupled with escalating rental costs, has pushed the team into making a final decision to relocate to new premises.

Luckaly for us our neighbouring club "Plug" has decided to take Fuel on as their new 'lodgers'.

"Plug and Fuel have always been friends, helping each other out and we are delighted they are offering us a home, states Niall Marsh, Manager of Fuel, who goes on to say "Many of our regular entertainers and door supervisors, all keen to stay with Fuel, have also been kept on".

Plug will start hosting Fuel every Friday and Saturday evening from Saturday 11th August. The same entry price will apply and our resident DJs will continue to please the attitude free crowd. Anja and Jucinder, Fuel's Drag Door Diva's will be sure to greet guests as they arrive this week.

Fuel at Plug will be in the Neutral Room (entrance opposite the kabab shop) and will trade from 10:30pm until 3am.

Don't forget Fuel's pre-bar The Lions Lair on Burgess Street will be continuing to trade as normal

There are like three rooms at Plug, the one they had when razor stilleto was there is at the back of the club (Eyre Street End) opposite Chicken Shop Take Away. It's a nice room quite initmate but not too small raised sort of stage type dance floor and long bar on the right handside as you walk in with small seating area on the left behind the dancefloor. It's separate from the main club and I dont think you can access it from the main club so will keep the meat heads away who go to Plug! Loads better than Fuel though, I have to say I'm suprised they bothered staying in Sheffield, so they must be looking for a new venue.... I suppose Fuel will be taking the door money and Plug will be taking the bar?? or vice versa.

So lets get this into perspective.

Fuel Sheffield has gone from being a large, two roomed venue to having the use of a back room in another club opposite a kebab shop.

This is good because..?

Does this new room have any seting area ?

Will they be employing more bouncers incase any homophobic people from Plug decide to cause trouble ?

Jesus, what do you think goes on in Plug?

Firstly you've got someone wanting to keep the 'meat heads' out and now the comment above? I'd say Plug was one of the, if not the, most progressive venues in Sheffield.

Might it not have occurred to you that the Plug patrons will be too busy enjoying themselves to care about what's going on in neutral?

Now that Fuel is only on Friday and Saturday (slowly becoming another Climax here) will they be seeking new premises ?, or staying at Plug ?

They seem to be opening less and less these days.

Might be worth a trip just to see what it is like :)

From what i see when have been to Plug the clubbers there aint bothered about sexuality. Although i can't speak for them all. They are a lot friendlier that the Gatecrasher and Embrace crowd.

If Fuel do look at premises in Attercliffe i'll be the first to complain. I really don't want to go clubbing in the dark, seedy streets of Attercliffe!

Good luck to them though, i hope they get a better venue and if it was in the centre i'd be glad to support!

So lets get this into perspective.

Fuel Sheffield has gone from having its own, large, two roomed venue to having the use of a back room in another club opposite a kebab shop.

This is good how?

The entrance next to the Kebab shop is the main entrance to Plug, we can't demand our own entrance now! We're lucking they are putting us up.

I vote to close the thread, just open it they shut/reopen/relocate :-)

I didn't realise that my comment was to get that quicker response.

I would like to wish Fuel Hull all the best from Kim and Dave :-p

Razor Stiletto did very well at Plug Neutral and loads of gays went to that....with no trouble at all....although it's not really ownership of a gay club...it's more of 'gay night at plug' by fuel....

I think it is rather sad that anyone should be here plugging another night by Fuel after all the Sheffield staff have been sacked. It would be alot better if Fuel left Sheffield quietly after having obviously failed than keep this cheap diversion to make their departure more apetising.

It just goes to show how annoyingly ignorant some gay people are assuming because it's a straight club that it's full of meat heads and homophobes.....progress has taught us well!

It's quite sad Fuels gone from it's current home but I think it would be commercial suicide to move to attercliffe

I was not plugging it (no pun intended) just saying it's not ownership of a gay club if its just a room of another club and a predominatley straight one. It is a good venue though and at least it's the funky crowd imagine if it was a room at Kingdom! hah hah. I do agree though they must have put an awful lot of people out of jobs. Well we shall see if they bother to keep up the night there....probably is a good money maker though..Plug gets the bar they get the door...and Fuel does not have any expenses apart from paying the 'drag' (and I use that term losely) artists........

Yes it was me personally who closed it down, nothing at all to do with the management.

I'm glad you are pleased that Fuel has closed, downsized and put people out of jobs, but personally I'm not particulalrly impressed and free to say so.

If it turns into a moneyspinner for Plug, which I think it could do (as the reason alot of people didn't like Fuel was because the venue was just so sh*t!) then maybe Plug will slit Fuels wrist and run the gay weekends off their own back:hihi:

Used to go regularly when they first opened. Was working at a bar in town and the then manager used to let us in for free at 1am ish as we couldn't arrive any earlier.

When the then 'new' manager took over he told us we would all have to pay the £6 although we were only there for an hr and its not like we had been drinking all night elsewhere. So we stopped going! 6 people drinking for an hr is better than none but we weren't going to be robbed on the door, so instead of £36 pounds entry and drinks they got nothing! Nevermind, their business i guess and they can do what they wanted. It also bothered me that they claimed to be 'for the community' yet would offer free entry and acts on Climax nights.

Oh we
