I have MSN Messenger 7.0 installed on my [shared] computer. The problem is, somewhere along the line, it has saved my email address and password and so it is possible for someone else using this computer to log in with a single click, be on Messenger using my identity, access my Hotmail, etc.

Can anyone help me on how to undo this, so it always asks for a password for anyone to log in?

Before signing in, open Messenger, and click on "Sign in with a different e-mail address"....this will bring up a sign in box....sign in with your usual e-mail address, making sure that the check box "Sign me in automatically" is unchecked. Hopefully this will cure the problem.

If you're using XP, it may be that your XP log-in is linked to your msn passport...if you click on Start, then Help and Support, and type in relevant key words, you should find a way of unlinking it.

Another way, in XP, is to set up a separate login account for the other user(s), and then password your own login, which would mean only you would have access to anything in your XP login account.

Can I bandwaggon this thread?

I installed 7.0 but there is anolder version still kicking about that keeps trying to tell me to update.

How do I find it to uninstall it? Initial searches have been fruitless :(

Right click on start, click Explore, click on My Computer> Local disk :c\>Program Files. It should be in there Strix.

Found it  Ta Vid ;)

I was trying 'all progs' from 'start'

.... but now I can't find 'uninstall'.
Can you tell me what to do next? Delete doesn't work does it?

Presumably you've been to control panel-> add/remove programs?

Yes. Windows doesn't seem to think it's a program :suspect:

I had this too when I replaced Windows Messenger with a newer version of MSN Messenger. It said before I could delete it I had to delete MS Outlook as it was a shared program (or something :D )

I would first try Add/Remove programs in safe mode Strix. If it's not even showing in safe mode let me know.

I think it might be in the Windows components bit, rather than the installed programs.

File > Sign in as yourname@hotmail.com

Then enter yourname@hotmail.com and an incorrect password, ticking the remember me box.

That should do it :)

The easiest thing to do is delete the lot of em Strix IMO.
Go to Add/Remove and remove anything from msn. Then do an advanced search for msn and delete everything it finds.
If you have trouble deleting a file download This File (http://www.techsomething.net/Downloads/regedit.rar). It will add the option to 'Delete On Reboot' to your right click menu.
If that doesn't work you can use File Unlocker (http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/) to unlock the file and delete in the usual way.
Once all traces are gone you can re-install. Everything should go fine

Its probably windows messenger that comes bundled with XP, ( this is not the same as the messenger service that caused popups).

Best thing to do is remove shortcuts to it from the start menu etc and make sure its set to NOT run when windows starts.

I tried clicking 'newer version', but it wouldn't install, so I did it a different way, loaded 7.0 and got left with the niggly message from the old version :(

for anyone who is interested:

if you're annoyed at all the bells and whistles on the new version of messenger (7.0), try installing this patch:

http://apatch.killercarrot.co.uk

it is totally customisable, you can remove whatever you like, leave in whatever you like.. it's great for giving yourself a nice clean messenger client to work with..
