Sorry if theres already a thread on this..

But, was just wondering what are people cooking for xmas dinner?

This is my first christmas cooking for my son and OH and I havent a clue where to start!

Let me just start by saying I hate turkey - OH loves it.
I think christmas pudding is disgusting - OH loves it.
Sparkling wines and stuff dont appeal to me - OH loves them.

Im thinking - a snazzy sunday dinner? :hihi:

Let me know what youre all doing/cooking to see if I can get some ideas please!! :D

I'm debating between a pork joint, or lamb, I hate Turkey too!

I want pork, lots of it so we`re having that along with lamb and as each year most of the turkey we buy ends up in the cat, the OH is getting something called a "Turkey crown" this year.

I have no idea what a turkey crown is - I imagine its the top of its little head or something, and if it is.... there`ll be spankings.

Its basically the top part of the turkey, breast etc without the ribcage and legs/wings etc

I don't think that this will give you any inspiration Gina, but we're having Aubergine Lasagne, followed by profiteroles (I'll also be doing something for the carnivores at the table)

As its the first one you've ever cooked, do something that you're comfortable with cooking - if you're doing something completely new the pressure could freak you out a bit. A dressed up Sunday lunch, like you suggest, sounds perfect

Ta for the info.... if I dont have a leg or two to chew on then she can bugger off with that idea!

Well ive got a massive joint of pork in the freezer - cost me £14 at Morrisons :| Dont ask why I bought it...

At xmas, my family have always just had literally, a bigger sunday dinner. More veg and 2 different meats!

But last year, I went to OHs parents.. and well, Yorkshire puds and white sauce starter, Turkey, chicken and pork. Cabbage, Brocoli, Couliflower, Sprouts, Carrots, Leek, Asparagus (SP?!), Mangetout (SP?), baby corn, gravy, more yorkshire puds, mash, new pots, roast pots, parnsnips, carrot and swede 'mash'... With a glass of fizzy wine :gag: AKA Lambrini (MIL tried hiding she was serving Lambrini!!!) Then she did bloody christmas pudding, urghhh! With Brandy sauce. Everyone then stuffed their faces with buns she'd got from fletchers (Half of that family works there :| ) and quality streets and all got drunk...

I picked at the dinner - Couldve killed my son because he went to sleep while we had dinner and I felt totally out of place.

Xmas to me is about having a lazy day and eating loads. Not about getting drunk and stuffing yourselves til the point where talking is too much effort! I dont mind a moderate drink, but getting drunk just doesnt appeal to me...?

We haven't decided yet. Last year we had goose which was lovely, much nicer than turkey, so maybe we'll do that again.

If you're having your gran for xmas dinner, she'll be 30 minutes per pound at gas mk6. And take the walking stick off her, otherwise it gets stuck in yer clack!

First Christmas after my divorce so rather than sit with a bunch o relatives who I dont see from one decade to the next, and my ex wife being a cow over seeing kids (her new boyfriend does not alow her to speak to me, not even about the kids) Im packing some sarni's up and going to the seaside to watch the sea on my own in peace.

Not for self pity, just cos I like watching the sea

Was looking forward to a carpet picnic on my own in front of the tele this year, however, it's all turned out to be a rather busy one at ours, so will be having ham and beef with all the trimmings, my sis will probably bring a soup for starters and I'll get someone else to do the pudding.

Beef for me with roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips, sprouts with chestnuts, beans and cauliflower, new pots , yorkshires and gravy. I might or might not bother with a Christmas pud.
If you don't like christmas pud why not get a small one for him and a steamed pudding for you, most supermarkets do single portion sized ones. With the main course again you can get things like turkey crown which is not nearly as massive as the whole bird and a lot quicker to cook and a joint of something else for you.

I will probably not be having christmas dinner, as I don't really eat sunday dinners and IMO a christmas dinner is a glorified sunday dinner :hihi:. So will probably just eat something I enjoy eating.

Why not get a chicken for them, and a lovely bit of whatever you fancy for you ! You could also get some individual puds for them , and whatever you fancy etc...

If I were you I would get myself a lovely bit of beef fillet, a fab pud, and if you like cheese a sumptuous cheeseboard ! And while they're all choccied out and sleeping the booze off....watch whatever YOU like on tv.....ENJOY ! :hihi:

Smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and champagne for breakfast.... saunter on into town for Christmas Dinner, have a few more beverages, stroll back home for some loverly port and cheese and biscuits (if still hungry). Just the two of us though so only ourselves to please.

My mum cooks for the family every year. Same thing but I wouldnt have it any other way. My mum does a turkey and a pork. mash potato, roast potato, carrots, sprout, parsnips, those sausages wrapped in bacon, stuffing.
and usually soup/prawn cocktails to start

Haven't decided yet- it may involve not cooking at all if we opt to go and visit my sister (option 1) or my parents (option 2) or even my partner's rellies (option 3) but we may choose to be all quiet by ourselves instead. If that happens then he would prefer a day lying in front of the TV eating a really good burger or two, so whatever I do will be too much fuss for him.

Pigs in blankets Cat  Well thats what we call them :hihi: I cannot for the life of me, find a butcher that sells small sausages that arent in them packets/taste like rubber/precooked ones!

Oh Medusa I wish I had the option, sister is off to her inlaws, mum probably aint doing nothing and my nan keeps hinting at her coming to ours, Craigs nan keeps hinting of her coming to ours aswell and his mum has offered us a seat but last year didnt go down so well, I didnt fancy trekking Middlewood around all his familys homes... :D

Im lost with where to go/what to do. And has anyone even tried to call up a resturant and even get xmas in edgeways without a big NO WE'RE FULLY BOOKED  Its too much hassle for what it actually is.. Overhyped xmas :(

(

That's why I always do big ones, I just buy my favourite thin pork sausages from my local butcher and wrap em in bacon, when it comes to pigs in blankets, bigger is most definitely better.

Probably not the best food in the world - but no washing up! £40 per person is a pretty good price and when we went a couple of years ago, it wasn't fully booked.

Thanks for that claret but we dont drive, and obv no buses or anything on xmas day. I was looking at places within reasonable walking distance to us. Everywhere is full, so we're just eating at home I think! :)

Oo fox, I never thought of just doing 'big' ones :) Ive always had small ones at xmas :hihi:

Well I will prob be having 2 xmas dinners as my dad is working over christmas so going over to my parents the weekend before and then on the day either go to my OH sisters or it just be the two of us. It is true though xmas dinner is just like a glorified Sunday lunch really with a few extras.

this year im doing a lush butter basted turkey stuffed with lemon and thyme, a standard sage and onion stuffing, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes using goose or duck fat, glazed carrots and peas, brussell sprouts roasted with chesnuts and smoked bacon lardons, yorkshire puddings, and probably some honey glazed roasted parsnips. and of course the usual pigs in blankets. all served with homemade gravy!

and for pudding (if we have any room left :hihi:) will be homemade steamed syrup pudding and fresh homemade custard!

I never thought i'd say it but HORAY my parents are divorced - that means I get two christmas dinners. Maybe even three if I get to fellas house on time!! Best start the diet now!

I moan every year about doing the festive lunch bit! But, I have done 43 years worth!!! I am lucky that one daughter helps with all the preparation/table etc, and the other daughter helps with the clearing up!!! It still is hard work tho' There could be 10 round the table this year!!! It will will just the very traditional meal, everyone will say how much they have enjoyed it (big 'ead!) and they will all have gone home by 5pm!! I will then look forward to Boxing Day and NO cooking!!!

As I've said most of our food will be home produced, including the turkey and pork.

I'm hoping to pick up some recipe ideas from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall who is coming to cook me 'Christmas Dinner' soon, I kid you not :D
