Hi
I know Vic Hallam had a bad reputation for building flat roof houses that were substandard a few years back, and I know that the ones with problems are being demolished in certain areas.
Does anyone know if Finnegan houses with flat roofs are also not very good orif they are actually OK???
Thanks
S

The council should be able to give you the expected life on tjis property and i think those type of houses are brick best to check i live in a vic hallam house that has been refurbished in the last 2 years otherwise my property was well passed the sell by date as these houses were originally buit on a temparary basis take my adivice and check out what the house was built of, And also take into consideration the roof as i ad problems making a insurance claim they woukdnt pay me out on a claim as theye saide the house was over due for DEMOLITION !! Now i have the best roof ever with a slite slope on and i will live here for the rest of my life snug dry and happy lololo Im a tennant with North British housing now and the changes made to my flat roof house is wonderful.

Finnegans are slightly stronger than the vic hallam houses. I have been told that this is because vh's are totally timber framed construction, where Finnegans have rsj's supporting them.

I had a finnegan house on arbourthorne until 2 yrs ago. I really liked it, the layout was nice, large kitchen and diner, although the size of the living room left a little to be desired.

The bedrooms were a nice size, I loved the built in wardrobes etc.

The house was well insulated, which made them quite good, and economical to heat in winter.

The main problems I encountered with them, was the flat roof flooding like a swimming pool, because the roofing felt the workmen had put on the roof had not been cut away adequately around the drain-hole, and therefore blocked more easily, and there was bad water penetration around my living room window from a breach of the waterproof membrane.

They were built in the mid/ late sixties, with an estimated shelf-life of 10 years. Almost forty years on, they are still up.

I know a shedload of these properties (Both VH and finnegans) are being demolished on the scowerdons / weaklands at hackenthorpe. The same properties off hollinsend road seem to be very well maintained, and in better condition. the ones on Arbourthorne, I have heard, are now scheduled for demolition.

I would not have moved, had the council not refused to do the adaptions I needed to stay there. I was pushed into moving to another district, into a house that was adapted. no thought given to the fact that my family were on my doorstep. I was moved miles away! I like my house, here, but I was unhappy at the upheaval.

There are quite a lot of flat-rooved houses in the north of Bexley borough - they're good if you like damp and want to trail around banks and building societies to be declined a mortgage as they are concrete and unmortgageable!
