View Full Version : Burglary at my house!
Two brand new portable CD players and a small deisel bag containing car keys were stolen from my back room in the Hickmott road area, between Ecclesall road and Sharrow Vale Road, near Nonnas and the post office.
It has been reported to the police.
Although the bag was found and handed in to the owners workplace (there was a payslip inside) and because the keys were gone the car has been moved to the owners parents house, i would like to mention that my housemates and my neighbour were chatting in the yard earlier that day when three people walked up the alley - one was posing as a employee of a power company, powergen i think, and whilst is possible act was convincing enough, his two friends looked out of place and far less convincing.
They may have been genuine house callers for the company, or one caller and a couple of friends, but they still seemed suspicious and then we were burgled later that day.
Anyway just a simple message to say remain vigilant at all times. We left the back door unlocked whilst two people were in the front room - just to give you an idea of the guts of these people (they must have known there were people in the front room) and the lengths you should go to to secure your house. Always secure doors and windows if you're out of the room for more than a few seconds.
A work colleague who lives on Brincliffe Edge Road got done the same way...(back door whilst they sat in the front room) only about 3 weeks ago when we had that warm spell!!
Took TV/Audio Equipment, CD's, bag containing cash/cards etc
Sorry to hear of the crime AndrewC but it is certainly a clear message to remind people to lock door etc even when 'INSIDE' the house!!
Yep, def lock doors when in, i always do so its the norm for me now. Sorry to hear about it AndrewC.
Yep me too, we got done the same way a few years ago. Now our doors are allways locked, and you cant claim on the house insurance for this as there is no forced entry.. that really sucks. I was really suprised to find out when I tryed to claim on my insurance, the only thing they would pay for was the locks replacing as they took my keys, my bag and the contents thereof were not.
Jimcameron 01-08-2005, 14:58 It's fact that they have the brass neck to do these things in broad daylight that amazes me.
What a sad state of affairs !
As soon as a bit of nice weather comes -----rare enough in Britain ------people are reluctant to relax and open their doors and windows [well , unless they have a Rottweiler , perhaps ] , in case scum -thieves sneak in and nick anything they can see.
No wonder more and more people go abroad for holidays and to live in countries where you can let the cool air in , without letting toe -rags in too.
Incidently the police man I spoke to when I reported our theft said, the majority of house breaks are this type these days.
Its the junkies so desparate for a fix that they just dont care..
Jimcameron 01-08-2005, 15:11 Got burgled at me mom and dads when i was younger and they just smashed the front door in in the early evening.
They were just loading the car up and the neigbours thought we must have known them coz they were so blatent with what they were doing.
sheff_minx 01-08-2005, 15:26 I think this is related to my thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51598) a few days ago - The bag was found in Eastwood Road (Off Hickmott Road). Glad it found its way back - I was going to hand it in to the police but by the time I got up my flatmate had already taken it up to the workplace.
crikey you're right, thats the one. She (and hopefully me soon if my interview goes well) work at william hill. Strange wew thought cos it had been handed in at the West street WH, that thats were the bag had ended up.
sheff_minx 01-08-2005, 15:41 She handed it in at the only William Hill she knew. Looks like the thief went through the possessions in the area though as you're very close to me. Maybe somebody saw someone hanging about? Difficult though as so many people sit on the benches next to the stream...
My friend constantly leaves his upstairs windows open, i hate it cos i always see dodgy peeple hanging around the grassy area.
I saw a programme on BBC1 that showed that even the slightest chance of entry will be taken by someone with the will to do so.
Perhaps you should move to Dore/Totley or even Stocksbridge, where the crime rate is lower ?
p.s. Don't move to Ecclesall though, it's quite high there according to government figures.

Are you taking the Michael again per chance?
It's hard to move to Ecclesall because as you know - when you get there you might not be living in Ecclesall after all.
Dore being a posh area has a high crime rate because there are lots of posh stereos and posh wallets to pinch for any pesky criminal. But the police do dash there sharpish once a resident calls. Think it's cos' some of the top cops live there.
Are there no nice stereos in Stocksbridge to pinch?
sheff_minx 01-08-2005, 16:27 AndrewC and I already live just off Ecclesall Road - seperately mind!
Don't have much choice about where I live - need to be close to uni!
