Hello ,

I'm a postgraduate student from India hoping to moving into a property on london Road.

I'm wondering whether London road is a safe area to live in for a postgraduate student? Whats the surrouding area and community like?

Any advice on the london road and surrounding area will be appreciated.

Thanks

Imaya

I'd live on London Road, if only to be near all the restaurants.
The surrounding area is ok I would say, like you'd expect in the middle of any city, a bit rough in places but not dangerous, it's always fairly busy at night due to the number of restaurants/take aways.

it's a safe area for students - most of them are students themselves - plenty of people about at all hours - good facilities all round

I'd check the crime rates though just to be sure.
Someone is bound to know them ?

I'm sure there's plenty of trouble if you go looking for it, but I wander along it at all hours, and never had any problems, even on match days (it's close to the football ground).

If you are moving from abroad you are better off staying in some university accomodation close to your college and once you get used to the surroundings move into rented property in an area of your choice.
If you have already commited to london road though, dont worry......

Althought I'm from India I've studied and lived in Manchester for four years. So I'm comfortable and confident of using private accommodation.

I was wondering whether its safe to walk from London road to the University of Sheffield, especially in the winter when it gets dark early.

Walking is something I like very much, so the distance doesn't really bother me. But is it safe. Can anyone recommend a safe walking route from London road to Crookesmoor road (where the law department is based).

Thats a big move. Moving anywhere new ( i assume you dont know Sheff) is always a big upheaval and it will take time to settle wherever you go. Having lived in various places around the country, some of which i was apprehensive about at first, i came to feel at home in.
I always try to forget about my worries over somewhere and go on my positive feelings.
London Rd is a busy place with lots goin on. Its close to the countryside, antique shops on Abbeydale, the posh parts on Ecclesall Rd and is quite multi-cultural with plenty students.
If you are worried about walkin, take the main roads and act sensible until you get to know the place. Sheffield is a great place to walk, getting the bus to the Peak District would be dead easy and you have miles of open country.
I dont live that side of town though and am sure there are many more people who could give more specific advice.
Good Luck.
