View Full Version : Blueyonder speed increases?

Has anyone noticed some (very welcome) speed increases on Blueyonder?

The signal page for the modem shows a bit rate of 10240000 bps down and 384000 bps up. That implies 10 meg to me.

However a speed test is currently showing 5 meg (see here (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedchart.asp?id=4a854692105719bc0fb29dd6dc8))

I'm supposed to be on a 2 meg connection.

Rumours on other boards say that Blueyonder are doing trials. Anyone else seeing anything like this?

that speed test isn't specific to your connection (or mine), it's a generic test of some sort done periodically.

I'm currently managing to pull around 120KB/s over bittorrent. Which would suggest a speed of 960 Kb/s, I'm supposed to be on a 768 Kb/s link, the speed looks more like a 1 Mb link though.

there is no 768 its 1mb now

oh yeah, I remember something about the upgrade. That explains why I can get 125 KB/s then.

Nah mate, sorry but you're wrong. Thats the results of a speed test I performed this morning. Try it yourself. Although I admit that these speed tests aren't accurate, they're never that inaccurate!

Blueyonder, although they're yet to admit it, are rumoured to be doing speed trials throughout the country. Some people (including me) are seeing huge speed increases. I'm downloading from apache.mirror.positive-internet.com at a constant 612 KB/sec, which is a bit under 5 Mb/sec.

The rumours say that they did a 10 meg speed test over the weekend (I wasn't around to see what speeds I got) for high-use customers normally on a 2 meg or above connection.

they should make the speed test link bigger, it takes some finding.

Downstream 822 Kbps (102.8 KB/sec)
887 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Upstream 92 Kbps (11.5 KB/sec)
99 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Pretty much what I would expect on the 1MB service, so no bonus for me.

Although Cyclone is using Bittorrent (so laaaaaaaame) I'd listen to him concerning ISP service speeds ;) Just let it go :D

let what go?

they are doing faster speed tests but not on all exchanges and not for everyone. otherwise it wouldnt really be a test so much as an upgrade.

if you get it your lucky.

I tried cycling the modem this morning, still got exactly what I ought to for our 2 meg connection. Ah well... :) I guess it would be rather silly to roll it out to all customers, although I'm not quite sure what they are testing unless people know and use the extra speed...

people are using the extra speed whether they know it or not. i assume they are testing that they can cope at their end.

It would actually be interesting to know how often they are using it... It's pretty rare to max out this 2 meg connection on plain browsing - to be honest I doubt I ever manage it apart from file downloads (although of course that's when you'll really benefit!). Still, I won't complain if they increase speeds for free! :) I see they also increased your upload speed to 384, that would come in handy too.

if it is only those that have high usage on the trial, i'm surprised i'm on it as i didnt think i do that much. altho i do use RDP a lot (the small increase in the upload speed has improved RDP a huge amount!).

however i'm randomly downloading big files now to try and convince them that i'm still a suitable test candidate ;)

Announced today that 10Mb is to be the norm:

the article is a bit confusing. It talks about 512Kb service being upgraded to 2Mb, but there is no 512K service, it was upgraded to 1Mb ages ago.

So are the now 1Mb customers going to be upgraded to 2Mb, or to 4Mb???

An increase in the upload speed would be very welcome, probably more useful for me than the download speed.

I can confirm that the link is true.

The speeds are definitely going to be increased fairly soon with no increase in prices.

There is a 512 service, it is the base service now

no, 256 was upped to 512 and 256 was scrapped. 512 was upped to 1.

i still seem to get close to 5 meg but sometimes its around 4, so maybe they've already upgraded me permanently. that would make sense as i'm supposed to be on 2.

nice.

right, so is the article saying that people currently on 1Mb (ie me) will be upped to 4Mb? If so, i'll be dropping down to 2Mb and saving an extra £10/month.

thats what its saying.

actually after re-reading, as i'm on 2 meg, i should be on 10 when it rolls out proper. but i was only upped to 2 meg after i complained about prices a few weeks earlier. so it will be interesting to see what they do :)

Thats right

What will happen is

512k will now be 2MB
1MB will be 4MB
2MB will be 10MB
4MB will also be 10MB but at the price of what the old 2MB was.

Yay, I move house tomorrow back into a Telewest franchise area. Although Freedom2Surf have been great I'm happy to get my Telewest back :)

The only bit I'm confused about is the upload speeds as it's saying that some services are increasing to 364kb/s or 256kb/s but I was pretty sure they'd already done this to most services...

Wish they'd just call the packages something generic so that there wasn't this confusion everytime they upgrade it...

.. not that I'm complaining about the upgrades at all :)

the blueyonder page is here (http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyonder/getContent.jspx?page=bbs_evenfaster) which describes it more. upload is currently 128k apparently.

Ah... that wasn't around when I looked earlier... but it's a whole lot clearer on what's happening.

Thanks for that link... much appreciated.

This speed increase should stop our customers from complaining about other companies offering a faster connection at a cheaper price. I'm lookin forward to seeing what other companies do especially the likes of bulldog

Follow the following steps to increase the speed

1. Go to Start-> Run-> and type gpedit.msc
2. Expand the Administrative Templates branch
3. Expand the Network tab
4. Highlight QoS Packet Scheduler
5. Click on Limit Reservable Bandwidth and check the enabled box
6. Then Change the Bandwidth limit % to 0 %

After that check the speed here http://www.ip-details.com/
